2023-2024 SUNY Downstate (Brooklyn)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Was also very confused.. do you mind updating here when they get back to you? Would email them too but figure they have gotten many emails about it already lol
Totally spaced— i called them yesterday and the 2 business days refers to right now how long you have to accept the spot, no need for payment until after the AMCAS plan/commit to enroll tools open! April 15th / 5 business days refers to the $100 deposit (so nothing to worry about now)

Anyone else with an A know where I have to indicate "plan to enroll" or "commit to enroll". Per the instructions say the deposit AND this question have to be answered and I saw their follow up email about the deposit but not regarding indicating enrollment?

i believe its in AMCAS portal and the option does not appear till feb 20.

Hey all! I was fortunate enough to receive an interview! If anyone that has interviewed and willing to answer some questions, please pm me. Thank you 🙂

Are OOS applicants eligible for in-state tuition after first year?
I found this on the SUNY website:

At SUNY's State-operated campuses (University Centers, University Colleges, and Technology Colleges), students are generally considered New York State residents if they have established their domicile in New York State for at least twelve months prior to the last day of the registration period of a particular term.

  1. Generally, individuals who have maintained their domicile in New York for a period of fewer than twelve months prior to the end of registration are presumed to be out-of-state residents and are not eligible for the resident tuition rate.
  2. Individuals who are financially dependent and whose custodial parent(s) lives in a state other than New York are generally not eligible for the resident tuition rate. However, students of divorced or legally separated parents may acquire a New York State domicile if the custodial parent is a New York State resident or if the student resides with a non-custodial parent who is a New York State resident and the student intends to continue to reside with that parent throughout their attendance at SUNY.
  3. Individuals do not meet the twelve-month residency requirement if domiciled in New York State primarily to attend college.
  4. Note: Non-resident students may be eligible for resident tuition if they have graduated from a New York high school or received a NYS high school equivalency diploma within 5 years of application to SUNY. See below for details under exceptions to the Domicile Rule.
So I guess as long as youre not a dependent, you should be good to have in-state in 1yr.

What's the school's plan for rotations given the upcoming hospital closure? Debating if I should attend the interview

They are closing one of the hospital buildings. This building is not really used as much as others. You still have kings county, which is one of the biggest hospitals in the city. Downstate is also affiliated with NYC Health+Hospitals, which is the name of the public hospital network in NYC. Im sure that the quality of the rotations will not be affected by this decision.

Thanks for the response

hi! congrats to all those with As! I was wondering if anyone has a gauge on when early jan interviewees will hear back? not sure if i should expect thid in the next few weeks or with the next wave in may... anyone have any insight?

+1 A 🙂

Although I deferred from last cycle so SUNY was already the plan for me. If anyone is committed to going this fall please message me! I've been waiting to meet my new classmates for months and I'm so pumped

+1 continuing interest email… does anyone have any idea what this means

+1 Continuing interest email. The title seems like we should confirm interview interest but the body seems to say just to withdraw if we're not interested, but doesn't say what to do if we are.
wondering the same thing ?

my friend got it last year. i think they want you to tell them you're still interested if you are, not sure if you should make it an LOI (letter of interest) or just respond to the email though

How would we send a letter of interest? Is it through their portal or an email? Got the same email so I'm psyched I'm still in the running!!

Also confused bc it says in the email we’d like to update you on your application status but it doesn’t give any update 😂

I see this on the website:

Does this mean we aren't supposed to send a LOI in reply to the continued interest email?

Based on last years thread the email doesn’t seem to have much correlation to getting an interview anyway

Congrats! When did you interview/get the A email?

Screw it. Once I saw there was the option to send continued interest I just sent mine right away in the portal. Nth to lose for me.

Lol same I just uploaded it directly to the portal after I sent my message gotta let them know I'm in a loving and committed relationship with them (I'm so tired)

For the people that got the continued interest email, was that post interview or pre interview invitation?

Hey guys! Current student here, happy to answer any questions you may have either on this thread or pm. Applying to med school sucks so hopefully I can help just a little
What do you think sets SUNY Downstate apart from other SUNYs that are ranked higher? It seems like Downstate matches with some great schools despite being unranked so do you think the curriculum or other factors contribute to the success of the students? Are you guys given any resources like UWorld for studying for STEP or shelf exams? Are there opportunities for shadowing or getting published in MS1 if you're interested in competitive specialties? What's it like going to school in NYC, do you have any regrets?

I think the clinical rotations set us apart from other medical students. We are the only medical school in Brooklyn so we aren't competing with students from other schools for procedures or interesting cases. There’s ample opportunities for research. Brooklyn is also incredibly diverse so we learn a lot from our patient population. We have great home programs so it’s easy for us to get close to program directors early on for a good letter of rec and connections.

We are given iPads and complete anatomy but no other study resources. But tbh I wouldn’t even worry about that, there’s way more important things to worry about as an applicant.

Our exams are NBME written and we have them like every 10-12 weeks which is huge. I heard people mentioning these were important when deciding where to go but I never realized how big of a deal it was. No in house exams and exams spaced out should be up there with cost and location when you make a decision imo. It allows you to study extremely efficiently and learn just enough to do well on STEP. Not having to worry about exams every week is amazing. When talking to friends at other schools, I seriously have it easier than those with frequent in house exams. This gives me more free time to work on ECs, research, and hobbies.

I’m from OOS and never lived in a city so it was definitely an adjustment.

Downstate is an underfunded state school in an under resourced area of Brooklyn. There’s gonna be threats about shutting the hospital down every few years and people are gonna trash the school/area but I think it helps your training and the match list seems to reflect that
