I think the clinical rotations set us apart from other medical students. We are the only medical school in Brooklyn so we aren't competing with students from other schools for procedures or interesting cases. There’s ample opportunities for research. Brooklyn is also incredibly diverse so we learn a lot from our patient population. We have great home programs so it’s easy for us to get close to program directors early on for a good letter of rec and connections.
We are given iPads and complete anatomy but no other study resources. But tbh I wouldn’t even worry about that, there’s way more important things to worry about as an applicant.
Our exams are NBME written and we have them like every 10-12 weeks which is huge. I heard people mentioning these were important when deciding where to go but I never realized how big of a deal it was. No in house exams and exams spaced out should be up there with cost and location when you make a decision imo. It allows you to study extremely efficiently and learn just enough to do well on STEP. Not having to worry about exams every week is amazing. When talking to friends at other schools, I seriously have it easier than those with frequent in house exams. This gives me more free time to work on ECs, research, and hobbies.
I’m from OOS and never lived in a city so it was definitely an adjustment.
Downstate is an underfunded state school in an under resourced area of Brooklyn. There’s gonna be threats about shutting the hospital down every few years and people are gonna trash the school/area but I think it helps your training and the match list seems to reflect that
