I wish! If I had inside news, I would most definitely be sharing with you guys! 😎

Those who got accepted are either a friend, or a friend's friend, or from my interview batch.

SIGH............ Feeding my cells and mices have never been more boring. I'd rather lurk on SDN. :meanie:

Wow, how is it that you know so much of the inner workings, whiteprincess?! You got inside sources?

FREAKY!

Hehe, indeed. 🙂 I have to say, work has taken a turn for the decidedly boring recently.

This was always a shot in the dark; never thought I'd come this far!

Hi there, see that a few people are gearing up for the 2011 applications. I still have several MCAT books for sale here, going for cheap bundle price:

1) Examkrackers, with 3 subjects books namely Biology, General Chem,Organic Chem.

2) Kaplan MCAT Premier Program (with CD ROM), very comprehensive review.

3) Princeton Review MCAT CBT (math and science reviews)

5) Nova's Physics MCAT book (really recommend for physics review)

All are in good condition. Only available in Singapore - do PM me.

cheers

I know 3 ppl from our interview batch got offer.. But I haven't heard any news yet..

Yep, the 3 people you know are very probably the same 3 people I know who have gotten in.. 🙂 I'll keep my fingers crossed for you too! Let's hope we hear some news in March..

Interesting!

That probably means they send out acceptances to the "no-brainers," the ones they would have no matter what, first.

And then wait for the "debatables" till later on in the season when they've got all the applicants' information. Makes sense.

Sounds like we won't be hearing anything till April, then, most probably.

Well! Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Hmm.. yeah.. that's what I've been thinking of! 🙄
But, I'm still wondering, why some ppl from my interview batch got email saying that they're on the on-hold list.. 😕 Meanwhile, I haven't heard anything yet..!!!

Btw, I met a friend who got accepted.. That person told me that Duke-NUS sent a personalized acceptance email. So, they wrote what impressed them, etc etc.. Duke-NUS does read our CV!!! 🙂 That guy told me not to worry, cos they're sending the acceptance letter one-by-one.. hahahahaha..

Yes, it is mysterious indeed.

Well, it's out of our hands now. No point worrying about it. 🙂 Might as well enjoy it!

Chickenchop, you're the best!!! No, the guy who got in was not from our Nov 19 batch.. I think i know who you are too..... But seriously, based on my track record, I should stop conjecturing who people are.

I wonder if that super smarty pants scholar got in...
Got in. Doing thesis now. I am not as smart as you think. Its not very hard to find me. Esp now you know my surname.

HAHHAHAHAHA. Must you speak in staccatos?

Ok. Got it. Congrats. Hope I. Can join. You soon. 🙂

If you notice the time of the post, it was posted at 3am. Thus my replies are succinct and to the point.
Earlier in the day, I drank too much coffee at a symposium and therefore my brain was a bit fried from caffeine over stimulation.

It would be my pleasure to interact with you during TeamLEAD session. I wish you good luck.

By the way, Pre-Grad Award just got renamed to a scholarship in June 2009. Thus I only see myself as a second grade scholar inferior to the NSS scholar, two of which are in Duke-NUS now. So not really Smarty pants scholar, at most a second grade...

Just got my MCAT score. Thanks to all who encouraged and reassured.. Did better than I'd expected, and so now it's the waiting game!

Btw anyone from the 9 Feb interview?

Doctor Oei!!!

I think I know you! I attended the symposium too, and I sat behind you.. Then you told me about the Bio-Rad candies in a cute bottle!!! Btw, you must have drunk too much Nespresso coffee on that day.. lol.. 😀

Arghh.. I do hope to have another TeamLEAD session again.. *which is only possible if I get in to Duke-NUS, or if I apply again next year and be invited for interview*

Does anybody who uses these forums have any information regarding the performance of successful Duke-NUS applicants? If any accepted applicants could provide information about the following I think many users would really appreciate it:

- your MCAT score?
- your undergrad degree and GPA?
- your research experience and publication history?
- your on-the-spot essay topic?
- your interview questions?

Thanks in advance!

- MCAT 36Q and 34R
- under GPA: 3.49; grad GPA 3.62
- no publication. genome sequencing and drug delivery research experience + TA experiences (mechanical engineering and organic chemistry courses)
- something about ethics... Can't really remember. It was last year.
- Again, can't really remember much other than Dean Cook keep trying to make me commit to doing MD-Ph. D, and me trying to give vague answers... Oh yeah, I think they did ask me a lot about my family.

Good luck to all those still waiting.

Hi All,

This thread is chock-full of anticipation but a few acceptances, and I've noticed... no rejections!

I got my letter in the mail today. It was dated the 2nd of March. It's hand-signed by Dr. Stenberg. That's a nice touch.

Good luck to everyone that got in, and everyone anticipating to get in. 🙂 Break a leg, guys!

The mistake is mine. I should have been clearer.

Thank you. Of course there are options... no plan is a plan without contingency plans. 🙂

Good luck to you, and everyone else. I might keep tabs on this forum just to see how things turn out.

Hey gte! ME TOO! (see below in red) Was this in undergrad, grad or while you were working? I'm using Applied Biosystem's protocol now, and it totally sucks big time. Experiments keep failing. 🙁 I swear you need magic fingers to do this ****.

Thanks for your honesty btw. FANTASTIC MCAT score. I really hope you get into your top choice school! When will you know the results from UofM?

Oh dear, Iftekhar. Sorry to hear! 🙁🙁🙁 Jeez, are they sending out rejection letters already? I thought those only go out in the end..

Any word from your NUS friend? This goes to show how fast their turnaround is! You interviewed Jan 28 right? Strengthen your application, and re-apply again! Keep the faith !! (at least that's what I keep telling myself.....)

Hey Iftekhar, sorry to hear this. You can always apply again, like whiteprincess said. I understand that there are some who were accepted second time round, after strengthening their application. Suggest talking with the admissions office to find out what needs strengthening. Doing that would show them how much you want to be a doctor and be a plus!

Haha, actually, I have never done any wet lab stuff. It was all computational lab/read assembly stuff. That was the first research I ever did in grad school. And yeah, I have heard from guys who took care of wet lab stuff that it really can suck.😛

I hear from UMN in Apr. That's when decisions on intl applicants are made. Hopefully I'll hear back from IU before then to put me at ease. Thanks for the well wishes, and hope you hear some good news later on this month.

Ahh I see. Where did you do your undergrad then? Was research a component? Cool. Maybe you should come and help me analyze the 2000 Million read frames that I have on my library. Haha. Who's the idiot who came up with Excel which made storing truckloads of numbers so much easier?

Anyway, hope your top choice schools give you a decision soon! Will you be withdrawing from Duke-NUS if you do get in? (which I highly anticipate you will, given your killer mcat score)

TEEHEEHEEE.

HEYYYYY. Don't say that OKAY! I'm not a supersonicfantastic applicant. So yeah, I'm pretty sure there are many others above me waiting to swoop in!

28R MCAT. No research, no clinical shadowing, and a below-3 GPA.

Considering how competitive this school is, I'm wondering why I got called for interviews in the first place! I'm quite taken aback by some of the stats on show on this forum. Quite a fine gathering of accomplished academics, I must say!

But anyhow. A positive experience nonetheless. Good luck to you all.

Just a quick question: is it possible to do clinical shadowing while working a full-time job? What exactly does such a thing entail?

I would definitely say that shadowing is possible. I did mine exclusively on Saturdays, so shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck to you with whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for your support😉 yeah, I hope I get into UMN.

I did my undergrad at Georgia Tech in mech. eng., but didn't do any research until I got to grad school to study biomed. eng. I will probably withdraw from DN if I get into UMN.

Thanks very much.

How long did you do your shadowing for? Just wondering what is a "reasonable" period.

I did my shadowing for a month, which in my opinion was a tad too long. I should have done 2-week rotations with different doctors instead. The doctor I was attached to is from National Cancer Centre in SGH. 🙂

Realistically speaking, I think it is quite impossible to shadow during the weekends. Firstly because most of the senior consultants do not work on weekends, and even if they do, they're trying to clear as many patients as possible without having an over-zealous student in the room to whom they have to explain medical ethics/patient Hx to. The doctor I was attached to usually do not take in non-medical students but I was sort of lucky because one med student cancelled in the last minute. There is a application form that you can get (either on the website or from the hospital's general office).

Nonetheless, I think clinical shadowing was an eye-opener for me. But also, made me depressed for quite a while (oncology dept). I dont know if Duke-NUS places much emphasis on shadowing in your application though, as compared to other US schools..

You should try to shadow in a dept that you're interested in. My first choice was oncology and I spent a few weeks before that reading up on the different GI cancers. But seriously, i still had no clue what was going on during the ward rounds! It was kinda cheap thrill though, because those old patients thought I was a doctor. HAHAHHA. Sorry. PM me if you have any more questions! 🙂

Thanks very much.

Wow... interesting... whiteprincess, is it possible to attach a link for the attachment? Kinda interested if I can find time amidst starting my Honours project and studying for MCAT... cuz I just finished an oncology UROPS, moving on with a new oncology prof for honours... most likely prof Mei Wang or Dr. Caroline lee... so if i can shadow a doctor in NCC, that would be great... Dun really know where to find it... care to help me with the link??? thanks lots...

As whiteprincess said, don't think so shadowing is necessary for Duke-NUS, I absolutely had no shadowing in my application 😛

I should correct myself: I never did any shadowing, but did volunteer work as a patient advocate at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Never really got to talk to doctors, but just a lot of patients and nurses.

Maybe you don't have to shadow a doctor, but do volunteer work at a hospital or local clinic. My experience definitely reinforced my desire to become a doctor.

I think for Duke-NUS there is no certain "criteria" as to whether you are supposed to have any particular credentials or not.. they are looking more at your overall application. If you have research experience or have done any volunteer work with any of the organisation it would definitely help in your application but is not an absolute necessity.

But yeah! if you can do volunteer work or can do shadowing, it would be great as it would reflect your passion for medicine better! 🙂

LOL... i just think it's interesting from what she described about her short stint at NCC... cuz i'm focusing my research on oncology...

If every day I think of doing something just to make it to duke-nus, life would be a torture for me...

Hey guys..

Just wondering.. Are there any of you who are applying for 2010 intake and have been interviewed but haven't received any updates yet?

All of my friends are either on hold or rejected already..
I'm kinda looking fwd to receiving a letter from Duke-NUS, whether rejection or acceptance.. As long as I know asap, I would be happy so that I can prepare what I shd do after my graduation.. Btw, I called Ms Tammie, she said it's prob by the end of April everyone will have received the application results.. 😕

Hey guys. My friend just told me something very depressing. She said that her friend, who's a RESEARCH SCIENTIST (not PhD, not post-doc, not even research associate), is applying for this application cycle. Loads of publications, probably loads of accolades.

Seriously, what are our chances with such competition? Haha. Okay, bye guys, I shall re-apply to Duke-NUS again 10 years later.. . . . . .

Everyone due for another scaring are they? Based on their missions and curriculum, Duke-NUS is not looking for your average, "perfect" medical school applicant. Rather, they are looking for students that can bring something to the table for their TeamLEAD curriculum. This school's teaching is basically half the time student teaching student, so they are meticulous in the students they select.
So if you're a well-rounded premed that can be a team player, and have a specialized area of science in your experience, you should be fairly confident in your application.

I WAS confident. Now I'm deflated. I use this pessimism as my defense mechanism.

In all seriousness, they really do look at your entire application. Patience, that's what Tammie advised. Patience. Now would be a good time to take up some hatha yoga/meditation classes. 😀

That's odd. I was just chatting with a Singaporean friend of mine about my intention to apply this year for the 2011 intake. The person you say she described kinda sounds like me! Haha!

GOOOOOOD LORDDDD. Yes I am positive it is you. HAHAHAHHA. The world is too small, too small. She said you're applying for THIS intake? Not next?

Anyway, she said you're "definitely gonna get it". I was depressed for the rest of the day about competing with supersonic applicants like you and drank 4 cups of latte, instead of doing experiments.

You're not taking your MCAT in march? I'll tell her she has HORRIBLE info. HHAHAHA.

Yep, I just checked with her - you're the one. It really is a small world! She said you've applied for the 2010 intake and are now waiting for a letter. I really hope you get in - she said you're really enthusiastic about doing medicine.

As for me, I've got months of grueling study and anticipation to look forward to. :scared:

Good luck to both of us!

So this means that Exhibitionist (a.k.a. supersonic research scientist) is intending to apply for the 2011 intake??? 😳 This means that he/she will be competing with people like me applying for the 2011 intake instead of the 2010 intake??? 🙁 LOL... ok 49 places left for 2011...

Now... now... where's my 4 cups of latte... :scared: :scared:
