I too interviewed 10/6 and was accepted this afternoon.

Does anybody know financial aid offers given out?

Congrats! First off, I'm still trying to figure out if everyone gets the invitation to apply for merit scholarships, and if not, if anyone knows roughly the proportion who do.

As for your question MJ, the merit scholarship invite says we won't find out until April, and I imagine that is when the rest of the aid comes out too.

I interviewed there yesterday and LOVED it. If I had more time I'd post what I loved about it, but I'm almost late for a meeting. I can, however, answer the merit scholarship question--well, sort of. I know for a fact that they do not go out to everyone. That's what they told me at least. G'luck to you all.

Hey all, does anyone know how many people are rejected and how many people eventually make it off the "hold" pile? I am put on hold there.

I hear 1/3 of the class is accepted from the hold.. or waitlist pile. Are those the same thing?

Lots of the top applicants who get into Case also apply to places like Yale, Hopkins, etc..

Thanks! Congrats to you as well. I have extremely similar numbers as you and am hoping I get some scholarship offer at this point. Oh and congrats on Pitt, I'm still waiting for my decision (interviewed late Sept).

Thanks! I'm sure you'll get great news at Pitt...what an awesome school, I loved that place 😍.

Can anyone shed light on the mysterious writing sample?

Thanks and congrats to everyone with acceptances!

For people who are put on hold post-interview,
when do you think we should send them the letter of interest/intent?
I'm thinking maybe in December/January which is when I guess they start putting together the waitlist?

🙂

Not really. They change them around, so you probably won't get one that someone else has already had. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Read up on the interview feedback and the school curriculum and review your research hypotheses and all that kind of thing to prep for the interviews.

I was put on hold. No surprise there, as I'm pretty average at Case.

Case is not the one I want in anyway though. It's a nice school, but it's far too expensive.
Don't rule out any school for expense before getting your fin aid packages. A lot of private schools cost more, but they also tend to give more institutional aid than public schools do. Case and CCLCM both wound up being much cheaper than my state school (this was before CCLCM went tuition-free!).

you made my day with this post!! i absolutely love case but am worried about the cost. so i guess i'll just have to wait & see & keep my fingers crossed for a while 🙂

Second this question. How many people make it in post interview from the Hold pile?

I third it.... How many, seems like a lot are in the hold pile.......

Not many 🙁

Here's the official word on the hold status I received via e-mail:

"At this point “hold” is a rather generic designation. We do reject a few people during the admissions season, but despite this, the number of applicants “on hold” is simply too large to incorporate all into our alternate list, so we will, once admissions season is over, reevaluate the “on hold” pool and then decide whom we will place on our alternate list. We will occasionally make admissions offers from the general hold pool during the admissions season itself, but this is relatively uncommon."

Received an invite last night, and I was thinking about scheduling November 14... BOOM, this morning, the earliest date I can book is January 9. Damn. Y'all really jumped on these dates!!

Congrats on your acceptance. 🙂 Come to the Case second look in March (it's a lot of fun!) and don't withdraw from Case or any other schools you really loved until you get all of your fin aid packages in the spring. Once you get them, then you can look at what it would actually cost you to attend each school based on the amount of institutional aid or scholarships vs. loans they give you. Don't forget that you will need to take into account the cost of living in different cities too. Cost of living in Cleveland is much cheaper than a lot of other cities. Also, if your family's financial situation changes after your get your fin aid packages, make sure to update all of the schools that you're considering and let them know, because they might adjust your financial aid awards.

I think I'm going to cancel my November 17th interview date and withdraw tomorrow morning, so if you really want an earlier interview, you could give Ellen a call tomorrow and see if that date opened up...

According to several sources, while Case admits about 40% of those they interview, only a third of that (~13%) are admitted right after interview. The remaining 2/3 of admittances come from the hold pool (i.e. the hold pool isnt really synonymous with a waitlist).

^ I pulled this from a thread last year, is this really true? a few people were in support of this as well.

That's a nice bit to know... I don't really know myself, but I'll talk to my student host when I get there...

Anyone thinking about going for the MD/MS in Biomedical Engineering?

Since I am getting my MS in BME right now ... no. However, I think EVERYONE should; because BME is the best.

Yes its true, more or less. Most schools only accept about the number of seats open in the first round. Basically, this is the schools dream team. Then, when innevitably a large number of those students matriculate elsewhere, they starts pulling from the holds in Decemberish. After that, the waitlist the rest, and pull them up as needed.

Another example is the U of M thread. Basically most people got put on hold till December.

I have my interview on 1/12 AND 1/13. Will I still be in interviewing for acceptances, or will I be interviewing for the Waitlist? Also, What is January weather like in Cleveland?

Acceptances. CCLCM will only fill half the class in December, and the other half in late Feb. after the interview season is over.

What he said. vvvvv
It cold and snowy with bone-chilling wind. (I went to Case). So, bring a coat and wear layers.
Bring boots too if you have them so that you don't get snow in your shoes. Having wet feet all day is seriously the worst. Once you get to the interview, you will be inside all day and you can change into your normal shoes. Good luck!

Okay, new question... Does anyone know where to get snowgear in California? I have no boots, and I usually attend classes in winter in flipflops... My only shoes are my running shoes and my dress shoes...

By the way, how much snow should I expect?

haha you have to be kidding me?! You don't have a large coat and boots somewhere in your closet?

If you think you might use the clothes more than once, try REI (stores all over CA and online).

I live in SOUTHERN California. I never go skiing, snowboarding, etc. When I lived in Chicago, I was in middle school, and thus I outgrew all of my old snowgear, and when we were moving to CA, it all got thrown away. I have a big jacket that I can wear, but it is from 5th grade. At least it still fits, considering I was a really chunky child😀 I just do not know its warmth in Cleveland Januaries though...

Considering that their boots are priced at $100+, I think I will pass...I might get them, later on... we'll see...

You'll be fine if you wear galoshes or some kind of rubber boots. You guys do get rain in Cali, right? 😀 But you really will need some kind of overcoat, and probably a hat and mittens or gloves. Maybe someone you know can loan you some? It would suck to have to go buy a bunch of stuff that you might never use again just for two days. Of course, if you end up in St. Louis, all that winter gear will come in handy there too.
By the way, how much snow should I expect?
No way to know. If you're lucky, not much. Most of the time it just kind of flurries every day and there isn't a ton of accumulation. If you're not lucky, you could come during or right after a huge storm, and then there might be a lot. Don't worry about it too much, because there isn't much you can do either way except be prepared with the right gear so you don't freeze.

Yeah, their stuff is high quality but pricey.

How about borrowing from a friend?

If your coat worked for Chicago winters, it should be ok for a Cleveland winter too. On the other hand, all those years in Cali have probably thinned your blood. 😛

Plus, it's hard to imagine feeling professional in a coat that you wore as a fifth grader. 😀

I wasn't going to say anything, but yeah, either that guy was a really precocious fifth grader, or that coat is going to look seriously ridiculous on him.

Seriously, funkydrmonkey, I wouldn't worry about the boots - you're only going to be there a couple of days, and you don't even know if there'll be snow on the ground. The paths will be cleared anywhere you need to walk, and you can always wear your sneakers if it's messy or icy.

But a coat is important. I'd try to borrow one, or at least get a nice warm-ish shell jacket that you can possibly wear on other occasions. It will be cold, that you can count on.

First of all, yes I was an extremely chunky fifth grader😳

Second, will I need a coat on top of my suit?

Yes, you will definitely need a coat on top of your suit. Midwest winter cold is so hard to imagine when you are in warmer climates. You need a trench at the very least and I think wool coats/peacoats would be even smarter.

Coats are nice, but you could do without if you were stubborn. Parking is maybe 1 minute from the building (you could cut through the hospital if you wanted). Tour takes you outside for maybe 30 seconds. You'd just be a little chilly waiting for the car heater to kick in.

The Adcom meets today...

The next round of acceptances should go out tomorrow.

How often do adcoms meet, at least at Case?

Also, I'm glad I was able to reschedule from January to November exactly because of the reasons FDM is discussing. 😀 Even though I'm from Michigan, I don't have a jacket to wear over my suit..

More about coats: You could maybe do without one for a little while in freezing temperatures, but wind chill temps can be much much colder. Also, in the event that there is snow or flurries, you probably wouldn't want your suit jacket as your outer layer.

Has anyone taken the RTA from the airport to University Circle? If so, is it easy to get from the airport to the station? Also, I am getting into the airport pretty late - is it safe to stand at the train stop? I'm deciding whether the $40 cab ride would be worth it.

Thanks!

The station is actually right in the airport. You head down to the baggage claim area, go down a stairwell, and bam it's right there. It is safe at the airport station, too. You get on one of the trains, sit on it for about 30-40 minutes, and one of the later stops is University Circle. It's really easy.

I remember reading somewhere in this thread that they meet every other week, but I could be mistaken. I do know they're meeting today.

The station is directly connected to the airport. Just follow the signs toward "Ground Transportation," and then "Red Line." The platform itself is just like any other underground subway platform, but I wouldn't be too worried about waiting there at night.

For the people worrying about coats, you'll be outside at most 30 seconds during the tour, but you'll most likely need one if you're walking to your host's place or to the school in the morning.

On my status page it says my LORs were "auto linked" on September 23rd, which according to the website means "that the letters have arrived, but have not yet been filed. These letters will be filed shortly." It seems like 6ish weeks isn't exactly "shortly." Should I call or have other people waited this long once their letters were auto linked?

Call. The admissions office people are super nice and even call back if you leave a message. I called and my letters happened to be linked the same day so it seemed like I was calling for no reason. 6 weeks is much too long for the linking to happen! 😀
