i was verified about 2 weeks ago and just got an email saying they received my AMCAS with preliminary instructions about the app...
does that mean i made it past the OOS screen? or can i still be booted pre-secondary?

Can still be booted pre-secondary untill you get the secondary. That letter you received is sent to everyone.

just got the secondary invite after being verified since late July. I'm OOS and not even from the South. mid 30 MCAT, sub 3.6 GPA if you're curious.

Just got my secondary today. I am OOS w/ a 36 MCAT and 3.75 GPA. I BETTER GET WORKING AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

So I just bought the 15 dollar usnews ranking stats...and UNC's for OOS was probably the most depressing one there.

UNC (OOS):
3053 applied, 98 interviewed, 45 were accepted, 25 enrolled

Well at least you're almost golden if you get an interview 🙄

hey man, can you post the same stats for INSTATE? i'd really appreciate it

Yeah, I am aware that they interview about 400 in state and matriculate like 150 or 160. Keep in mind that they are expanding their class starting in fall of 2009 so that could mean like 180 or more. But if they typically matriculate 155 in-state, how many accepted in-state students would that have to be, like 250-300? That means you got at least a 50% chance if you interview. But that could be wrong. Does anyone know, I only have MSAR and they don't show interviewed in-state vs. accepted vs. matriculated. They only have interview in vs. matriculated in.

912 applied, 458 interviewed, 180 were accepted, 136 enrolled

Damn, that 76% enrollment / accepted percentage really tells you what an awesome, affordable option UNC is.

yayy!! just got the secondary. I'm instate

My pre-med adviser, who went to UNC said that a secondary does not mean an interview. What to make of that? And do they base their decisions heavily on interview?

if you are instate it does. if you're OOS, then you go through another screening.

I wonder how much the interview factors at UNC vs credentials. Thats almost a 50% for in-state.

I'm jealous... 😳

don't be yet. I still need to pass the in-state residency thing....does anyone more about it, if you've lived here less than 3 years and have to fill out the long form?

So is anyone else getting the feeling that answering the second prompt - the "five qualities" one - is somehow detrimental? I just feel as though they'd probably rather hear about a service activity of some kind. Please tell me I'm crazy.

Also - I'd like to ask some advice of anyone who's willing to give it. I have two things that I'd really love to include in the application somewhere: one, that my wife attends Wake Forest Law School, so I really badly need to wind up in med school somewhere in this part of the state (i.e., Duke, UNC, or Wake), and two, that my dad is *technically* a clinical professor of medicine at UNC. Understand that this is basically only a technicality, he hasn't actually performed any duties for them in years, and he works at a hospital in Asheville, which is 4 hours away.

So my questions are, one, would either of those things even be worth including (as in, would they help at all?), and two, how should I do it?

Last question: is it lame not to include a picture?

1) dude, you are married. you must obviously look decent for a woman to claim that you are her husband! so yes, send a picture.

2) I am writing the 5 qualities essay. i feel i can articulate much better on paper vs. during an interview (where i can go on and on about service activities)

3) mention your father slyly during the interview, if at all.

Did you get the invite via email or snail mail?

I know you didn't ask me, but my invite was via email - I applied as in-state, though (although it's uncertain as to whether I'll actually be granted residency status). I imagine that they send emails to OOS-ers as well.

Oh, it's not that I'm worried about how I'll look in a picture (although some might claim that I should be) - I just don't want to go to the trouble of taking one. I guess it's no big deal.

So you don't think my dad's status with the school will make any difference? What about my situation with my wife in law school? Anyone's input is appreciated.

Bearferret,

How long have you live in NC to apply as an IS? Do they actually count you as an IS if you haven't establish a NC residency?

I'm struggling with which essay to write. I think the service activity one would be easier, but I'm nervous about repeating too much from AMCAS.

And the five qualities one could seem a bit boring.

Any suggestions?

What I've been told over the phone is that their requirements are: 1, that you, personally, will have lived in North Carolina - as in, actually been present there - for a full 12 months at the date of matriculation (which I believe is in early-mid August); and 2, that you live in North Carolina for a reason other than getting in-state consideration at their school.

A medical student at UNC said earlier in this thread that they're pretty generous with their determining of residency status, which bodes well for me.

I didn't.

And an update for all of you who are applying: UNC is awesome. The curriculum is extremely well designed, and the entire class seems to have been admitted based on interview and personal statement. Everyone is incredibly cool - not at all your stereotype premeds.

I didn't.

Yeah but by the time we matriculate Bonderman will be surrounded by cranes and construction. YOU CANT ESCAPE.

This is very relieving because I have heard that this was not true. The people I know that are M1s & M2s at UNC are extremely laid back and if everyone is like them, I think you are in good shape. Thanks for the insight

so what does "We have received your supplemental application and will be contacting you in regard to scheduling your interviews. "

mean?! CANT I JUST CALL THEM AND SCHEDULE!!

does anybody know if they have given a time period in which they will either offer you a secondary or not (if OOS)? what i mean is, once your primary is under review, do you know if they have a deadline to get back to you with a decision about secondaries?

Congrats to anybody who has an interview invite from this or any other school so far!

Remember to post them on the interview invite threads 🙂 It's helpful for other SDN members, not only this year but also in the future!

Thanks!

I'm not sure about OOS, but IS there is none. Could be as late at March I think? I'm sure OOS is sooner than that, but its probably not in the next little while so I wouldnt worry.

I haven't heard anything from UNC in weeks (no secondary yet).... I'm IS...are they normally this slow?

I was confirmed by UNC on July 18 and hadn't heard anything. I called yesterday to make sure they had my newest MCAT scores and they said they did and they were working on getting out secondaries. I wish they would hurry!!!!

When is UNC going to send out secondaries to IS applicants? My AMCAS was verified in late July (July 31st). I called the admissions office and they said that it takes couple of weeks 4-5 to send the secondaries. Has this been the case for IS applicants?

Add a couple of weeks to all time estimates you get from UNC.

I just got the note that they will be calling me soon...how long does it take for someone to contact you?

I got an E-mail saying that they received my AMCAS and that they will get back to me. I was pretty dejected, as I assumed that that meant thanks, but no thanks. A week later, they sent me an E-mail asking for a secondary. So don't freak out. That first e-mail means exactly what it says it means.

As for the interview, are you sure that every secondary application gets interviewed if they are OOS?!?! That would be save me so much stress if that's the case.

Nope...not for OOS.

No, pretty sure the guaranteed interview only applies to IS students.

Heh, if that were true, that would mean 98 OOS students got secondaries last year.

it's been three weeks for me. sounds like i should just keep waiting? i'm OOS but with ties to NC so i was considering giving them a call to see what happens

In case anyone was still interested...

I'm IS, and a UNC undergrad. I was verified by AMCAS on 8/8/08, received the "AMCAS application received" email on 8/11/08, received the secondary on 8/21/08, and was complete on 8/27/08. They DO send an email when they receive your supplemental materials ("We have received your supplemental application and will be contacting you in regard to scheduling your interviews.") I still haven't heard about an interview, and it's been 2 weeks.

LORs don't get sent until the interview notice.

To clear up the confusion, it looks like all IS applicants who receive a secondary are guaranteed an interview, but "all qualified OOS applicants" receive secondaries. Based on the OOS applicants interviewed vs. OOS applicants, there's no way they could guarantee interviews for all OOS applicants with secondaries.

My stats aren't exceptional, but I've got 4 years of experience as a paramedic and have put significant time (8+ years) into working in Haiti through a local NGO. I lucked into teaching UNC's first-year students BLS/CPR last month and spoke with a lot of them about their application process. From what I gather, UNC does a good job of looking at the whole picture and not just GPA and MCAT. Not sure if this is the reason I received everything so quickly or if it was just random...

hey, i received the confirmation email from UNC saying that they received my AMCAS on August 25 and I haven't heard anything back from them. i am an out of state applicant. since it's been about 2 weeks and a half, does it usually take them this long to do the screening process?
