woo, woo, woo. They are handing out scholarships already? Congrats, and to answer your question. I guess it wouldnt hurt to ask.

ditto - they won't revoke a scholarship just by asking for a deferral. To be on the safe side, you can ask for it in writing. I think that shows maturity, even though we might think it could seem a tad bit aggressive.

On another note, I have taken some time off since graduating from undergrad (originally not by choice, but then I sat out a cycle by choice and reapplying for c/o 2013) and it has been the best two years of my life. Granted I had some amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities during these past two years, not getting in straight from undergrad isn't really the end of the world. (In an attempt to cheer up my fellow SDNers still waiting to hear from UNC.) It's just a small detour, and you would be surprised what you can do with time away from school and away from home, if you choose to go that route. Makes you appreciate all the things you may have taken for granted. Plus, I must say, I've matured immensely being on my own and really am living the dream at the moment. Keep the spirits high folks!!!! 🙂 (I feel like I have runner's high right now.) 😀

I agree entirely. I initially took time off intentionally and then had to reapply. I've learned a lot, met some incredible people (my future husband), and matured incredibly. I know that now I will be a much better doctor than I would have been if I'd started a few years ago, even if I end up at a Caribbean med school. I have a lot more perspective on life, respect for other people and their differences, and I know where my values lie and what I want out of life. Find something interesting to do over the next year, whether it's research, grad school or volunteering and enjoy the time to read those books you didn't have time to read in undergrad (i'm finally reading "germs, guns, and steel"), try something new and exciting (I ran a marathon and started rock climbing) and spend time with your friends and family (before med school takes over your life).

A few things:

1) I would like to second what the above few posters have said. I did not want to take time off when I graduated from undergrad in 2007. Looking back on it, it was probably one of the best things to happen to me. I have matured a great deal and like someone else said, "gained a new perspective on things." There are ENDLESS opportunities out there. For any of you who do not get into med school this year, DO NOT WORRY. You will be better for it, I promise (even though you are probably wishing I would shut the hell up and you would get a phone call this week).

2) I just got off the phone with Randee and she said she was getting waitlist and rejection letters together to send out. This means that they might not be received until next week some time if they aren't mailed today or tomorrow morning.

3) For those of you who have already been accepted. There has been a lot of talk about needing to log in to your Onyen student page to get financial aid info. I don't know how/where this started but it is not true. Granted, if you log in, you can see your financial aid info, but that is for current students. I spoke with the financial aid office this morning and she said the "packets" would be sent out late April or early May and would be sent VIA EMAIL.

Good luck to everyone waiting. I hope at the VERY least you get waitlisted. Don't get down on yourself if you don't get in. Of all people, I know how disappointing it can be to not get in, but it is NOT the end of the world (even though it seems like it).

I graduated in 2005 from UNC. Want to talk about time off, I can tell you about time off . . . it both sucks and blows. Any time you are doing something you don't want to do, it is awful. Money really will solve 90% of problems. If I was wealthy, I could spend my entire time volunteering and doing research while studying for the MCAT. When you are working class poor, you will discover that you spend most of your time working while your opportunities become smaller and smaller. When you do find an opportunity to volunteer with a worthwhile project, you will discover that work needs you to put in some extra hours because they let a couple of your coworkers go. I can tell you now, another year off is a grim prospect. It is the doldrums laced with a inescapable feeling of ennui.

Just so we're clear, I was implying 1 or 2 years off. I'm not denying that it gets frustrating. A year (or even 2) off between undergrad and graduate school is not a big deal.

I did the whole post-bac thing. So, I'm not too upset that I'll be 27 when I start Med school. I am not too up in arms about that. This is my first application cycle. I am just annoyed with how things have panned out. It is what it is.

I'm in the same boat (graduated in 2005), went to grad school (Cincinnati masters program), and this is my 3rd cycle. So yeah, it really really sucks, but I'm still generally happy with how things have worked out in the long run. If the Caribbean is where I end up, then so be it. I'm going to be a doctor one way or the other. If you really want it, you can make it happen.

Sorry....didn't mean to post twice

I hope my son will get the rejection letter, so it will end his misery once and for all, and move on to U. of Pitt. where he was offered a big scholarship (1/2 tuition).

Yeah, Im sure hes gonna get a lot of sympathy around these parts🙄

Do you think you can defer if you have been given a merit scholarship by UNC? I always planned on asking for a deferral to do Americorps. I haven't recieved my paperwork for my scholarship yet (I just got my acceptance papers Saturday actually), but I was afraid to ask on the phone...didn't want to sound ungrateful. I'm guessing not so I'm kinda bummed (senior year has totally stressed me OUT) but of course I'm super excited about attending UNC next year, too.

I finished undergrad in 2006, and I can honestly tell you that doing AmeriCorps afterwards is one of the best decisions I ever made. I knew I was interested in medicine, so I joined the program that is co-sponsored by the National AIDS Fund and worked in a clinic at the Children's National Medical Center in DC. I can guarantee that I will be a more empathetic and thoughtful doctor because I did AmeriCorps... even if my training doesn't end up being at UNC! I really highly recommend the program I did (http://www.washingtonaidspartnership.org/Americorps.htm) or any others related to health. Good luck!

My understanding is that AmeriCorps and other endeavors like that one don't really help you make ends meat. It's all well and good if you have someone else help you pick up the tab . . . but if you have rent, health insurance, school loans, car insurance and general expenses like food, I'm not sure how much one can economize. Just a thought. I think that would be an extremely worthwhile program, but I don't think it is feasible for most.

It is tough, but believe me, I didn't have someone else to "pick up the tab" and I made it work! They've actually increased the stipend from when I was part of it, and most AmeriCorps members qualify for and use food stamps, which really helps. And honestly, having to live frugally also taught me a lot, as cheesy as it sounds. And again, I think it makes me better understand what some future patients might be going through...

Oh, and in a lot of places you will qualify for free healthcare coverage. I saw a great doctor (for free) at the Whitman Walker Clinic in DC.

I'm really worried about how to make ends meet as well. My parents said they can help very little, but only for a couple months. There are a couple of research positions I will be applying for, but have no guarentee of getting any seeing as there is a massive amount of overqualified PhDs in the Triangle area now from all the layoffs at the biotech companies.

My health insurance is over if I am not a full time student - don't know what to do about that.

I have offers for immunology PhD programs, and it won't cost me a nickel, but I don't want to wait another 4 to 5 years to reapply!

Too much to think and worry about it makes my head hurt!

I'm doing psych research, which is only paying $15/hr and I'm paying my own health insurance (blue cross/blue shield of NC) on top of everything else (rent, car insurance, student loans, etc), so it's doable. I even had car payments for my first few years off. You can get your student loan payments cut/deferred; I've done that with a few of mine. Especially if you do something like americorps or grad school, they will defer your loans without a question. It's not ideal, but it helps.

Don't worry to much about the PhD's looking for jobs. The one thing I've found is that if you're over qualified, it's just as much trouble as if you're under qualified. Connections are the best way to get jobs around here.

I will have been out of school for 4 years by the time I go back in August. Granted, I originally only planned to take 2 years "off." But, looking back, I don't regret it. I have had a lot of great experiences and met some wonderful people. I've learned quite a bit about myself and matured. I've paid off some debt. And I'm recharged and ready to be a full-time student again. Maybe I will delay retirement by a year or two, but who cares! The average age of last year's entering class was 24 I believe. So I'll be 2 years older. No big deal!

So, I think time off is a good thing.

Just so we're clear, I was implying 1 or 2 years off. I'm not denying that it gets frustrating. A year (or even 2) off between undergrad and graduate school is not a big deal.

Hey Y'all,

I haven't posted much on here, but reading everything has been really helpful, so I thought I would add in case it is of interest to anyone else. I am OOS and received the wait list e-mail around 4:45 today. Good luck to everyone!

Yup...waitlisted too.

Well, this still brings more uncertainty - I am happy though that I am not rejected as I have been from every other school.

Woohoo??

Hey guys,

I just have a few questions about the actual curriculum at UNC. I have forgotten some things since my interview so could you remind me of how the grading is done at UNC? I remember that it wasn't simply pass/fail but have forgotten the specifics and how it is done for each year. Also are all lectures streamed or do you have to attend every class/do most people attend lectures? Thanks

no email here either, not a good sign?
oh well, here's a toast to my colleagues that were better than me this time, congrats.

No email for me.

Sigh. I have to say, I am a bit baffled. I am in-state, got into Vandy and Duke, and am straight rejected from UNC? And I thought interviews, etc. all went really well. I am not complaining...very happy with the options I have...but doesn't that seem odd?

Year 1- p/f
Year 2- H/P/F top 15% get Honors...so pretty much everyone gets a P
Year 3 and 4- H,Hp, P, Conditional, fail.... Percentages depend on the clerkship.

They do have videotaped lectures, but not necessarily all of them. 50% attend lectures.

hmmmmmm 5:40, no email, mail or phone call..... do you know where your kids are?

Hey --- mmstaple. I am doing that program right now at the WWC. It is absolutely fabulous.

Anyway. I just got an email saying I was waitlisted. Does anyone know how the waitlist works at UNC?

Zach

waitlist for me as well-got the email at 4:45. I wonder what that means that some of us have already gotten emails while others haven't. good luck to everyone. :luck:

nothin for me either. Eric did say that everything was going out today either by email or snail mail. I'm IS too and am very dissappointed with this whole process. UNC could seriously learn a thing or two from the DO admission staff I have dealt with. Very poor customer service.

Nothing here either 🙁.... 99.99% chance of rejection, 0.01% chance of an acceptance with a forgotten/lost call

Nothing for me either.... assume rejection?
depressing but oh well.. guess it gives me another year to think over things.. i graduated in 07, kind of in a rush to apply for this year... guess it didn't work out the way i wanted
well been meaning to join americorps maybe this is the time.. anyone know if they allow you to take days off (like for interviews)?

well, I guess it's not the worst possible scenario, but just means a few more months of waiting.

on the bright side, to make time pass last night, I went to see fast and the furious 4, and it was decent. 7/10, IMHO.

Really? It was actually pretty good?

Hmm, sounds like I might go see it. I was hoping since the orginal actors reprised their roles, the movie shouldn't be too bad.

It wasn't as good as the first one, but it was worth 8USD or so.

has everyone sent a LOI in and i am the odd one out? Neither of my interviewers was on the adcom, so I feel like the entire committee that votes for me (if I even made it there) doesn't really know me as they cannot vouch for me. Wouldn't it be hard for a committee to decide if nobody has personally met me?

those that have, if you have a research paper soon (hopefully by end of april) getting published, would you only send it to them once the journal has accepted it/in press?

and what about more letters of recommendations? futile at this point?

Almost had a heart attack checking my email after looking at this, but did get waitlisted....

I drropped my response form off in the office this morning andtalked to Randee. She said there is a "relative ranking," but they don't tell you where you are in it until later/in the summer when they know who is going to accept the "invitation" to the waitlist. She emphasized "relative" and "invitation" a few times. She also said don't expect to see much, if any movement til the summer (although summer starts in May here, so I'm not really sure what that means). So I guess more waiting for now....

As for LOI, when is the paper being submitted/accepted? If it's soon, then I'd say wait, but if not, it can't hurt to tell them now and at least give them the head's up.

No e-mail. No call. No UNC 🙁

same thing here.
darn it, carolina....i guess we're breaking up. what did i do wrong? and please dont just say "its not you, its me".... 😕

Waitlist for me. I'll take it. I guess it means I am doing something right.

soooooooo for what it's worth, this gives me more hope....i'm told that this year they haven't given out as many acceptances as before, even though the class is full, as indicated by randee's email. So maybe they only gave out 160-170, and as people drop (for comic relief, if you already have an acceptance from UNC and some other school, now is a good time to go to "some other school" folks) there is likely going to be more waitlist movement this year than in years past.

Anyone else starting to see the light at the of the tunnel, errr, I mean, at the end of the summer?

good luck.

Joni just told me everything went out yesterday and this morning, both mail and email. I asked if that was "defendant on the decision?" and she Confirmed Yes... so if you got an email, congrats. if not- doesnt look positive.

Got it yesterday. It went into my SPAM email. Thanks Yahoo!. I appreciate that!

I'm going to stay positive.
Be glad you even got the email in your account at all. When UNC sent out the secondary invites, hotmail decided to block their IP address and wouldn't even let the message into the junk folder! I didn't find out until november when I called to ask about the secondaries and they said "oh but we already sent you one, did you not get it?"

Oh well, at least Gmail didn't filter the waitlist.

Is it safe to assume that a letter in the mail means rejection for sure? It's been a pleasure talking with you all here.
