What's this about "your" adcom member? Were we assigned a particular adcom member when we interviewed? I guess I don't really understand the process.

One of your interviewers was a non-adcom member and the other was. The one that is the adcom member is the one that actually advocates for you.

I am a 32/3.8 OOS
7.29 E-mail AMCAS received
9.12 E-mail 2450 applications received
11.26 E-mail going through applications and scheduling interviews
But I never received a secondary.

With it being so long since doing the primary, I assumed that I wasn't getting a secondary, but I am still receiving e-mails from UNC 5 months later. After the November update, I sent an e-mail, but I might call too. Anybody here still getting e-mails without getting a secondary after so long?

So has everyone else been getting all these random update letters?? I think I've been missing out on them.... :scared:

*/me starts freaking out about what this certainly must mean.....
probably nothing.

Really though, I've apparently been missing these update emails that people are talking about...

Could you let us know if they get back to you? I am in the same situation thanks.🙁

Well shoot. I had one interview that was excellent - the best interview I've had yet at any school - and one in which I may or may not have inadvertently insulted my interviewer. Guess which one was the adcom member?

how did you find out which one was which?

MCAT: 35Q
GPA: 4.00
OOS

These are the emails I received from UNC, all leading to a wonderful rejection.

8/19 - AMCAS APPLICATION RECEIVED
8/27 - SUPPLEMENTAL INVITATION
9/10 - SUPPLEMENTAL RECEIVED
9/12 - EMAIL ABOUT 2,450 APPLICANTS, YADA YADA YADA
11/18 - REJECTED, NO INTERVIEW

how did you find out which one was which?

It came up in the interview - neither of my interviewers were who I was originally scheduled for, so I tried my best to find out a thing or two about each of them during the interview (MD or PhD, what specialty, astrological sign, etc.), and my second interviewer told me that she was the one on the adcom.

your adcom interview will be emailed to you as the 15 minute interview. faculty is thirty minutes

funkymunky--how did you hear about the rejection?

I'm an out of stater who is getting the emails but hasn't gotten a secondary or rejection...

ruraldr, like everything else, they informed me of my rejection via email. Here it is, for kicks:

[FONT=PrimaSans BT,Verdana,sans-serif]Dear funkymunkytoes,

Thank you for considering the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. The School of Medicine receives a large number of applications for the small number of positions available for out-of-state applicants. Therefore we cannot interview the majority of non-residents, many of whom are well qualified.

We regret to inform you that we will not be offering you an interview this year.

The decision of the Admissions Committee does not affect your status with the MD/PhD program if you have submitted an application to that program.

We appreciate the effort that you put into preparing your application and we appreciate your interest in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. I wish you success in the future.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Bashford, MD

I don't remember this, but again, my interviewers were switched up on me the day of - in any case, both my interviews were longer than 30 minutes. In fact, the adcom interview took about 45, so they probably don't hold strictly to the guidelines.

concur. one of mine was about an hour the other about 45 minutes. i missed most of our 'lunch time', but i didn't complain...

Hey all,

So I'm not sure if people will take this as good news or bad news, but I thought you might be grateful for any sort of information. I'm an OOS applicant, applied pretty late (not complete until November), and just got an interview invite (my first!). They let you book your own time, and from what I saw I may have gotten one of the last spots open through the month of January. There did look to be several still open through February, and I didn't look any further than that. So the good news is, there are still interviews to be scheduled, which implies there are still some to be given out. Wishing you the same luck I've had here.

Congrats gridiron!! If you don't mind me asking, I was wondering what your stats are. Or you could PM me, or you could say "no thanks, but good luck getting an interview". Whatever you want. 😀

dear bruceleehiiiyaaa,

The Admissions Committee is reviewing your application, but no final decision has been made. You will remain under active consideration and will be notified as soon as a decision has been reached. Unfortunately, because of rolling admissions, this process may not be completed until the spring, do not despair.

No further action on your part is required other than to keep your file current and your wee in your pants. Please inform us of any fall semester grades and, of course, any change of address. Thank you for your continued interest in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Bashford, MD

I second that do not despair email..........is this a bad sign?

When did you guys interview? IS or OOS?

is that a waitlist in other words?? and how long ago?

same email. ugh. bad day.

I got one as well. I don't think it's a waitlist, I think it's just what it says...looking back on last year's forum, some people who got this letter received an acceptance the next week. It DEFINITELY doesn't seem to be a "bad" sign, because a lot of applicants who got them last year also got in. So don't worry yet!

I was about to ask the same question. Did you call them?

interesting. they called you today?

side note:is it the admissions office or your adcom member who calls you when accepted?

I third that email...or fourth or fifth 🙁

Word.

The following link is to page 4 of the 2007-2008 NC medical schools forum, which focused primarily on UNC. Page 4 is where the DND letters become the hot topic...(see halfway down page):

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=436063&page=4

ps. Premed worrier: I think it's the adcom member who calls. I believe they meet again next Monday (15th)...probably the last one this calendar year.

so i am told they send out secondaries into january. Any other sept 13 in-state mcatters still waiting for secondary?

officially one full month post amcas rec'd email from eric!

So i was reading through the forum and I saw this (post #390 from http://forums.studentdoctor.net/show...=436063&page=4)

'UNC-Chapel Hill will expand its medical school enrollment from 160 to 230 first-year students on a phased basis, starting in 2009. Brody will expand its first-year medical school enrollment from the current 73 to 120 students in a phased process. The timeline for increasing enrollment will be determined by the fall of 2008.'

is this true, because if it is then everyone's chances have gotten better compared to last year

I was told that due to budget restrictions due to the current economic crisis that ECU will not be increasing next year and they also said it was likely the same situation would be seen at UNC as well. Furthermore, I was told that increases will now likely begin in 2010 on a phased basis.

well thats a buzz kill.

what it seems to be from other forums is that a majority of the people get accepted around January and February. my friend who is now in medical school at UNC was an amazing student (3.8 GPA at Chapel hill and 42 mcat and good extra cirrics), he had his interviewed in Nov. but got accepted in Feb which is much longer that he ever thought it would take. so stay positive! i am. although i have become obsessive compulsive about checking my mail, email, and cell phone

Yeah, the expansion thing has been in the works for the past couple of years, but from what I've heard, may be pushed back a few years, unfortunately. Would've been a good question to ask in my interview but I didn't think about it until later.

I'd be ok with it if you wrote your secondary essays about why they should send me one, too.

I believe so.. I'm sitting by my phone... haha

Yikes! I'm sure its too soon for me to hear anything, but my phone was dead this morning. Did anyone hear anything? And for future reference, do you guys know if they would have sent me an email if they couldn't get a hold of me? :xf::xf::xf::xf::xf:

I interviewed almost one month ago... Probably a little too soon to be expecting anything...

I interviewed in late Oct. Now I'm starting to get ansty. Is it the real committee or sub-com meeting tonight?

I don't know. What's the difference?
I thought someone earlier on this thread said 'the committee is meeting again on dec. 15th' (or something to that effect).

Their committee is huge. The way Dr. Parker explained it. Sub-com presents to big committee, then decisions go out.

I think that was me. I said, "I BELIEVE they meet on the 15th" but it was just based on the 2-week cycle. If you look at last year's thread, the committee did NOT meet this week because of winter vacation.

hmm. ok I should let my phone out of its deathgrip now then.

ahh... we're going to have to wait until January for a decision?

Oh well... I've waited this long...

Yeah, I wouldn't worry yet. They give out a majority of their acceptances starting at the end of January. Looks like the 40/4.0s have been the only ones to get acceptances so far this year...there's hope yet.
