I'm trying to do the math 160*4 would be 640 students total. However, according to the AAMC the total enrollment as of 2008 is 734. This would actually be between 180-185 per class. Anyone know what the deal is with that discrepancy. I guess i have that typical med student obsessiveness with detail.

Remember a lot of their students do the MPH somewhere in between...I'm guessing they're still counted.

Good luck everyone who is still waiting to hear. I've got my fingers crossed for you today!

oh, i hope i get a phone call today!! i interviewed in early december and the waiting is killing me!! i'll probably get fired from my job tonight for standing in a corner staring at my phone....
does anyone know when they send out reject letters?
good luck tonight everybody! :xf:

April 1st I think. Which is great, because how will I know if I got rejected or the admissions committee just has a sense of humor. I'll call up there with my skinny envelope and be like "Haha very funny! April Fools! Now when do I get my real letter?"
Speaking of calling, I just called the admissions office and talked to Joni. I was just like, "Hey, here's my phone number in case you need to reach me tonight for any reason. Obviously you guys must have just misplaced it in the past." I also left my email and the phone number of several close friends. Hopefully that will clear up any confusion with my application that I've had.

Yea, and MD/PhDs are there for 7 years- so you would have to add 3 years worth of MD/PhDs that are enrolled in both. And then one year worth of MD/MPHs because they stay for 5 years. And then Im sure theres a screw up here or there- because UNC strives for 100% graduation. But the 160 is pretty firm I think. 140 Instate, 20 OOS, 5 of which are ED and some number of whom are MD/PhD. Of that 160 exactly 50% will be male and 50% will be female. Some percentage will be reapplicants, and up to a maximum percentage will be from UNC undergrad. And though I have seen absolutly no evidence of it, I'm gonna go ahead and play Devil's advocate here and say there may be some quotas on ethnicity like there are at other schools . Once I took all this into account I realized that the number of seats I was competing for was actually pretty small and the number of people competing for it was quite large. Just something I was thinking about.

Don't forget the quotas for my daddy went here and/or wrote a big check.

Either way thats a pretty big class size, biggest in NC and a lot bigger than many others.

No, actually I tried that. And my grandfather taught at the Med school. Dr. Bashford remembered him and asked me about him. Didn't work for me. This indicates that quota probably does not exist.

My dad and grandfather both went to UNC and it still took me 3 application cycles to get in. That carries much less weight than one would think.

Has anyone heard yet??? I only interviewed 2 weeks ago so I'm doubting I will hear anything tonight...

Good luck everyone... I have the same question as HeelsMed. Anyone heard anything tonight ?

Nope, I just hope they either have a long meeting or are doing two days...usually someone has said something by now 😕

bummer.. thought tonight would be the night
can anyone confirm if the meeting took place tonight? kinda surprising no gleeful post yet

Yeah, I was hoping to hear something too. All I can hope is that maybe the meeting was lenthy tonight and they won't call until tomorrow evening? Between not seeing any news tonight and Duke postponing their planned March 6th notification date, I am becoming more and more anxious! :scared:

I'm in Dublin, but my parents said they'd email me as soon as I got a call tonight (If I did). Well.. I didn't get an email, so I'm assuming I didn't get a call. I guess I'll find out for sure tomorrow.

i know, right! between Duke and UNC i think i might lose my friggin mind! i think im just gonna leave the country--turn off my phone, close my email account--so i cant be contacted in any possible way! +pissed+

I just called and spoke with Joni; those of us who interviewed should hear "by the end of this month." At least we will know

Did she mention whether the committee met last night?

I looked back over last years board, and no one was really accepted past this point. I keep hoping all the rumors that the board is behind is somehow substantial, but at this point it doesn't look like it. Does anyone have any more information or can they further substantiate the claims that UNC is behind?

like I said before I did call last week so I could figure out if it was worth it to send in a third LOI/update aka how many spaces in the class are unfilled. Eric said 40-50 last week, but then again, they could've given them all out last night and just no one on sdn heard.

that would be a lot to give out in one night..... no?

so are they going to still make the calls this month?
or will it be just mass emails/mails sent out end of the month?

i work in the psych department at unc (i.e. with Dr. Bashford). i don't know the details (or why no one heard last night), but from what i understand, there are still places. so don't start stressing just yet.

Who is Eric? And why does he keep telling us the class is only a little over half full?

Thanks Lajumelleali,

I appreciate the info.... Still stressing... but thanks!

Zach

Has anyone heard any news/rumors that might indicate UNC will make any calls tonight? It was a little more than discouraging to not hear about any acceptances last night, so I'm hoping they will go out tonight.

i tried calling joni, but no answer all day.....but, thats what i'm hoping! it just seems too weird that no one from SDN got a call last night....
i'm working again tonight, so hopefully that will keep me distracted...
another night of staring at my phone, willing it to ring instead of doing work....my boss just LOVES me right now....

I dont know what this means....but when I signed up for second look it said something like 44/160...so I dont know if thatmeans they have sent out 160 offers or not.

Yeah, I don't know. I haven't heard anything from UNC (I interviewed about 7 weeks ago) but can login to the second week calendar and click the "yes I will be coming..." link and schedule myself in there (I suppose I could, I haven't actually tried to create a participation).

I called the admissions office last week and asked them about this and was told they would fix it so only those who go accepted could see the link - either it hasn't been fixed yet, or there is something about my status I don't know of...I would rather it be the latter, but is most likely the former. 🙁

Hopefully the 44/160 doesn't mean they have already extended the 160 admittance invitations, but that they know admissions will be capped at 160.

I really doubt all the spaces are full. It is still relatively early for a school to have given out all of its acceptances... or thats what i'm going to keep telling myself to make me feel better 🙂 Im hoping they make some calls tonight! Good luck! :xf:

they did meet last night, and did make at least one acceptance.🙂

Would that one acceptance be you wazzoo? If so, congratulations!! If so again, did you get the call last night or today?

yes, and thank you. they met last night, but I was called today (twice, the first time I didn't answer, I was at work). it was one of the two people that interviewed me.

Congratulations. Guess that means I got some more waiting to do.

hmmm, if you're abroad and neither of your interviewers was on the adcom since you had a unique interview (actually, entire experience was unique as I was the only one they interviewed on my day and had a 1-1 tour, too) session, should you expect a letter if you are accepted?

waiting continues...

I would probably assume you'd get a letter, especially since it sounds like some OOS people got letters instead of phone calls. Just make sure every way of contacting you is working functionally and checked periodically.

I'm sick of the waiting, too. Good luck!:xf:

Does that mean committee meetings are over? When are the final acceptances?

Guessing they'll meet throughout the month.. not sure if they'll meet weekly or bi-weekly as usual.

I think they'll meet through the rest of month as well, as some people just interviewed 2 weeks ago. Good luck all.

Hey,

Did any of you guys receive a thin envelope from the UNC Admissions Committee that let you know you have in-state tuition? The letter scared the crap out of me b/c I thought it was a rejection.

I received that letter on Tuesday and it too freaked me out. Made me wonder why they would send it at this point; thought that was already ironed out when I interviewed.

I really can't express how annoyed I was to receive a thin envelope notifying me of that nonsense. It was done in poor taste. What is the point of spending 42 cents to notify every single applicant that they are an in-state or out of state student? That becomes quite expensive eventually . . . especially if you are notifying over 1000 applicants. They should only send that letter to people who are offered a spot to UNC.

I didn't get one of those. Did you go to UNC for undergrad?
