I got my interview invitation, via email, at 8:17 am this morning!! I sent my supplementary application packet on July 24th.

My interview is scheduled on September 2nd.

Good luck to all!

P.S.: I am an in-state EDP applicant.

Hi all,

I just received an e-mail with interview invite information (date, time, schedule, etc.)

Good luck everybody!

(Sept. 2nd as well!)

I had a question... what kinds of letters qualify for the "Personal Evaluation" letter?? This isn't something required by most schools, so I'm not too familiar with what they are looking for. Thanks in advance =)
The Admissions Office told me that the personal evaluation should be from someone who has never taught me in a class. I got it from a mentor I had volunteered with for several years.

An interview invite--how bittersweet. Good news for obvious reasons. Bad news because it conflicts with another interview at Ohio State. What's worse is that (1) I rescheduled Ohio State already and I randomly picked 9/16 so I feel like a fool, (2) I live in California so if I picked another date I could've hit two interviews with one flight.

I hope it works out--otherwise I'm losing an extra $250. That's like a free Nintendo Wii.

yea, this not picking a date thing is messing me up. I have a procedure at work scheduled for the 16th already, but IU said they are interview-booked till NOVEMBER. dam man...

anyone on the 16th want to split a room? i was planning on getting in around 10pm and cannot justify $100+ for a couple of hours of sleep...or is there student hosting?

I got extremely lucky with the date. I have stuff scheduled two days before and a bunch after. Craziness.

Also, if you call the Sheraton for a room, be very persistent to get the rate listed in the invite email. They didn't know what I was talking about when I called but eventually gave me the room for the listed price, and they felt bad and gave me a sick room as compensation.

Just got the packet. 🙂 I take it the Dean of Student's Evalutation needs to be sent directly from my school to IU... Just making sure, the self-addressed envelope they send is for us to return the forms, and not for the Dean of Student's evaluation right?

ETA: ignore my question, just went back to read the other pages (read them weeks ago) and apparently it doesn't matter how we do it. 🙂

Does anybody know how IU views graduate work vs. undergraduate?

Had my interview today. I believe today was IU's first day of interviews .. with around 50 applicants .. all Early-Decision.

The interview session itself was very informal. I was interviewed by 2 faculty members (together) for about 45 mins. We just talked mostly about my application, my extra-curricular activities and some standard questions like "Why Medicine?" and "Where do you see yourself in 20 years?".

Good luck to all!

I had my interview as well, and it was quite laid back. It was more of a "get to know you session". If anybody is going to interview there soon, keep in mind their competency based curriculum. They loved questions and answers that referred to this.

Good luck to everybody 🙂

SDN has pages dedicated to interviews complete with sample questions and tips on how to get there, where to stay, etc. It is a really good thing to check out.

Is there a link to this for IUSM? Thanks.

Got the snail mail supplemental packet this past Saturday (9/5), hoping for the interview email soon enough.

is there anybody in here who had requested for their interview to be rescheduled? If so, have you all heard back from the admissions folks? Thanks!

What are the LOR requirements for IUSM?

Interview went well on the 2nd. Like others have said it was real laid back and almost conversational, though towards the end they threw me some moral dilemma questions pertaining to my hopeful specialty. Anyone know if they will be notifying us by snail mail or email? Nothing else to do now but wait... (and study, I almost forgot I have another year of undergrad)

What are the LOR requirements for IUSM?

Personal Evaluation. To be completed by a person who has known you for several years and who can evaluate your personality, character, and general fitness for the study and practice of medicine.
Academic Evaluation. To be completed by faculty members who can assess your academic promise for professional study based on their observation of your work in class. One form should be filled out by a biology, chemistry, or physics professor, and the other by a non-science professor.
Graduate Students. In addition to the above, if you are formally enrolled in a program which leads to a graduate degree, the Admissions Committee strongly suggests that you ask your faculty advisor to write a letter of evaluation.

The Dean of Students evaluation form comes with the supplementary packet.

http://www.medicine.iu.edu/body.cfm?id=174&oTopID=174

These are minimums, though I wouldn't include many more.

I called and asked them about LOR's, and they assured me that a committee letter usually suffices. If they needed anything more to complete my file, they did say they would ask me for it.

My school doesn't do committee letters, and from what I've seen on here, I'm glad

I just got that email today that states they will notify me "in writing" if they will continue to consider me. Will I have to wait for something in the mail to come or will I get an email?

why's that? I haven't seen much negative about them. Many schools even prefer a committee letter. Of course, you have to know the faculty in the committee and they have to like you..

I've seen stories about people waiting on a committee letter for months, holding up their applications.

Stevo what email did you get? have you had an interview yet? Was it a quasi-rejection or was it more just to let you know they received your app?

And also, thats the same e-mail I got a few weeks before I received the supplementary packet/ interview invite. So hold tight after you receive it, they are reviewing your app then.

I see. I drudged up the same message from my email account

anyone have an interview on weds (9/16)?

The last sentence said this: "The Admissions Committee will review your AMCAS record and you will be notified in writing if your application is eligible for further consideration and interview."

I'm guessing that's what everyone got? I wanted to know if the packet you got was thru snail mail or email.

So now it's just about the waiting 🙄

Ya stevo sorry for earlier but I forgot that everybody gets that email. I received my packet through the mail as you will too. there are some pamphlets and different info that would be difficult to send in an email. There is hardly any work for their "supplementary." I've heard of people (including myself) who got an interview invite via email before even receiving a supplementary packet. Of course, that may be because I applied via edp but waited until the last week 😀.

IU just scheduled my interview on the same date as another interview. 🙁 Anyone wanna switch dates with me? This sucks.

interviewed at IU today, absolutely loved everything about the school, all the students were friendly and excited to be there, and my interviewers were both incredibly personable and easy to talk to. good luck to everyone!
Had the exact opposite experience today-- a shame because I absolutely loved their facilities and the location. My student hosts rocked, too! Everything else about interview day though... ugh I'm still sick to my stomach about it.

wow sorry man, were you in the morning or afternoon?

Morning. Support staff were extremely helpful and friendly, so were the student hosts, again they were super cool and really got me amped up for the school the next morning. However, I got to my interview at 10:00 and they were running an hour late already (I was the third interviewee). After waiting in the anteroom for an hour, I got into my interview at 10:50 and finished around 11:50. By the time I got out I went back to the check-in desk to ask if I could still make the Fin. Aid session or the info session and was told "well... I guess you could still make the tour at 12:15 if you get to the info session and wait for the med student?" Then the tour got cut short because it was running late and others had interviews still...

Not to mention during the interview I was given a ton of grief for being from Chicago and for being a "broken arrow" who chose medicine later than usual. Lastly, I was turned off about having 4 questions asked about high school experiences (class rank, ACT, summer program in H.S., asked about what high school activities I participated in that I obviously didn't include on AMCAS) and they only got to TWO other questions about me that didn't relate to high school. Tried my best to steer the conversation to my current activities and important experiences, but meh.

I'm really really sorry if I sound irritated and I truly wanted to love this school because it really had great students and awesome facilities, but I just felt like they kept trying to convince me not to come and already had me "sized up" by my application before interviewing me. 🙁

thats rough man, but you'll find a school that you like and likes you back. sometimes the stars just dont align for a certain school, and thats why people call the process random. where else are you interviewing so far?
I have some stuff at other places so I won't freak out about it, it's just a shame because it's a midwest school that has pretty solid board score wise with some other qualities I really did enjoy. Keeping my chin up and focusing on the next one! 🙂

So Mr. Broken Arrow..... just kidding. i am a non trad student who has applied to this school too, so looking forward to the same experience as yours 🙂
Anyway I am going back to school in my mid 30s. What age gets classified as broken arrow here?

You have nothing to worry about. I just got an unlucky draw with an interviewer. I'm not super broken arrow as to qualify as non-trad. I'm fresh out of college and I purely did not enter college with medicine as my only intent and changed in the middle (which is for the most part normal and accepted usually, lol), so you'll be more than fine! Best of luck!

For non EDP applicants, does when they are scheduled for an interview (i.e., whether in October or December) indicate anything about their chances of admission or does it mean absolutely nothing?

rejection 1st thing this morning...my own fault really, i should've done more research to see that CA-residents shouldn't even bother applying...

Wish I read this before I wasted $100.00

Rejected today! Woohooo!!!

Nothing beyond what it usually indicates in a rolling admissions system, e.g. those interviewed earlier are more likely to be admitted not because they are necessarily more qualified but more seats are open at that given time.

BBender716: Sorry that the IU interview did not go well. I don't understand the purpose in inviting someone for an interview only to tell them not to come to that school. I hope that you have other options or that this itself works out.

One of my friends interviewed there 2 years ago and also had a really hard time with the interviewer. She was a non-trad but was accepted so I guess if you handled it well, things could turn out ok. I have an interview at IU in a few weeks and am also an non-trad so I'm a bit scared! 😱

Hey Everyone,

I have a unique situation with IU...I am OOS (Ohio) but am marrying an Indiana resident this year and he is applying to IU grad programs...so...I'm not a resident on my AMCAS but I will be soon! Do I just cross my fingers and hope for an interview to explain that or is it okay to call the admissions office and explain? I just don't want to get rejected soley on OOS when I will be in state soon. Thanks!

Oh, and my stats are good...31S, 3.98 GPA, lots of EC's and Leadership, Lots of job shadowing, etc...and my undergrad is in Indiana.

Thanks!

No worries. All you can do is move on and try the best not to take it personally. I appreciate the well-wishing!

Don't be scared. Almost everyone else had a fine time. I think it's just rare. The students were as chill there as could be. Just be confident and comfortable with who you are and you'll be fine whether it goes well or doesn't! 🙂

I would say an email is in order at least. If no reply then I would call.

Any news for EDP applicants yet? That Oct 1st date is getting closer!

I hear ya Ash, and lately my mail hasn't even been coming until 5!! UGH!

Hey Ashish89, I'll be applying next year for entry in fall, 2011. I see that you are applying EDP. I've been strongly considering EDP with IU (I'm in-state, and qualified as far as stats). Would you recommend the EDP to other applicants?

Ask him (or me for that matter) in a few days lol😀
