Hello everyone this is my first time posting here, please add my info to the waitlist thread. In-state applicant, top 1/3 of waitlist, interviewed late April. I hope the waitlist movement isn't slowing down, seems that way to me. I hope I am wrong!

It's been pretty steady if you look at the day of acceptance for the previous people. You'd think there would be a huge burst of acceptances after the 15th, but we have yet to see that. The waitlist moved pretty steadily last year as well, but they did get to the middle tier by today (but this doesn't mean they won't get there soon).

I called and was told that if I called back in the first or second week of june they could tell me the exact date they started accepting people from the middle 1/3. so i'm assuming they are expecting to be into the middle 1/3 by early june.

That is true. I do not know how many people are on each third. Besides 2007 and 2008, every year since 2002 they have gotten through the middle third. We're definitely going faster than 2007/2008 though. Also here's the chart from earlier in this topic:

question though - when was Paiger moved from middle 1/3 to top 1/3. If he/she interviewed early on in the season, it is likely that he/she was moved to the top 1/3 because later interviewees were scored a bit lower than Paiger. I remember at my interview they said that while you may start out in one tier after your interivew, you can be put into a different tier (lower or higher) based on how the other interviewees do in comparison to you.

Paiger interviewed in December, so it's very likely that what you described is exactly what happened.

That is great to hear that the admissions staff is expecting to get to the mid 1/3 by then, and is more affirmation to our estimated trends based on previous years. Hopefully this happens soon and we can get deep into the WL

While I'm hoping everyone that wants to here gets in (and not here, of course!) I have my fingers crossed for you softmed. You were really helpful when I was making my decision so I'd love to have you in my class

i have to say, i don't really think their interview schedule thing is very fair.
i was complete in july, under review until april, and finally offered an interview spot in mid-april. (i sent 2 updates along the way). they said at my interview that EVERYONE has a fair shot at an acceptance REGARDLESS of when they interview, and yet...they also said that they had already begun to accept people off the waitlist (i think when i interviewed they said that they had already accepted 12-15 off of the waitlist and yet there were still 2 more weeks left when they were holding interviews). how is that fair???? why do people who were interviewed and waitlisted early in the season looked at a second time before all of us were even looked at a first time??

i'll never understand it. *sigh*

Hi all! I interviewed last week (3/3) and am on the bottom 1/3 of the wait list. Those of you who were waitlisted a month ago and got in off of the middle 1/3, may have actually been moved up. The waitlist moves every Thursday when the interviewed people from Wednesday are added and those they are accepting of the list are removed from the list. So, if you called right after you saw your name on the waitlist and were told top third a while ago, you may have moved down to the middle or bottom third by now. It might be worth it to call again and see where you are now. Also, if all these people are being let in from the top and middle thirds, we may have moved up! YAY for me! 🙂 Finally, they don't offer enough acceptances to fill their class until the day and week after their last interview (April 22nd last year). Dr. Severin has a certain number of spots which he'll fill every week until the end. If they are not filled by people from that interview Wednesday, he decides which people off the waitlist should be offered an acceptance in the place of those who stunk in their interview (to put it harshly 🙂)

I think UB is really pretty fair to everyone who applies....the ONLY thing I think that stinks is that if they don't review your application until after January-ish, there is an average MCAT already set by the accepted class, so you're compared to them. And I happen to know (direct from Severin's mouth), that the average MCAT of the accepted class for this year, as of the first week in April, was a 34! (Boo for me!) I'm sure it's dropped some by now, but that's still really high compared to previous years.

No way! He/she must be mistaken, we have ample data from previous years showing movement into the middle third before the end of May.

That is actually really, really good news for us on the waitlist. MCAT doesn't matter at all anymore for us: we're ranked and our rank probably not going to change. The fact that earlier in the season accepted candidates had around a 34 on their MCAT means they're more likely to get into their top choices (or top medical schools) and therefore less likely to come to Buffalo.

Think about it the opposite way: if Severin had told you the average MCAT was a 28 early in this year, it would be very disappointing. People with low MCAT are not likely to have multiple acceptances.

I agree with softmed's interpretation. I had a great score but didn't get into any of my top choices (or Buffalo at that point in time yet), but in general that's gotta be a great sign for the waitlist folks.

No movement today? Seems like the immediate post 5/15 movement wasn't as large as expected 🙁

At least not for us. I assume we're not really representative. Last year's thread was similar: one person accepted every one to two days even after 5-15. The only exception was 5-14 last year, where we saw 6 to 7 people accepted all at once. Assuming this trend continues, I think we'll be through, or close to being through, the entire top tier waitlist by the end of the month. At the very latest early June.

But there's always the possibility it could slow down more 🙁

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the size of the waitlist?
As in, how many people are in each third, how many get accepted/rejected immediately after interview, etc. I recall reading that Buffalo gets 2000 applications a year and gives 500 interviews, so how are those 500 divided up?

Actually, the website has not been updated in quite some time......UB received nearly 4400 applications this year. They offered interviews to around 600. The class size for this coming year is 140. Not all of those interviewed are waitlisted. But, I've never been able to find out how many are actually on the waitlist. From the fact that they do everything in 1/3's I'd guess at maybe 150? I don't know why I could never find this info out, but for some reason they seem pretty quiet about the waitlist and details regarding it.



Also, Softmed......Thanks for the hope! 🙂 I do agree that a lot of those accepted already should be getting into other schools of their choice, I just hope that UB hasn't become their choice, for all of our sakes..... I'm from the Buffalo area, have 2 kids, and really cannot move away from UB since my whole family support system is here. So, if I don't get in this year, I'm going to just have to re-apply for next year. I just thought it stunk to be compared to people who were already accepted with high MCAT's because my application was considered later than theirs. Hopefully we all didn't miss out on MCAT score points because of the previously set standards. Not much we can do about it.....but hopefully they all go elsewhere! 🙂 Good Luck!

In the past, there have been all kinds of guesses as to what the size of the waitlist is, and no one outside of the admissions staff knows for sure. I would assume that it is a good amount though, seeing as how our list on SDN is nowhere near inclusive of the actual amount of waitlisters and that there are plenty of lurkers on this thread (there's usually something like a 1:6 member to guest ratio reading this thread at normal hours of the day).

@SydSue027 - your posts have been very helpful and I really hope that you can get in this year to UB too! 🙂

I think the statuses usually change in the morning. Doesn't mean they only do that though. Plus people could be doing other stuff.

Hi guys. I was in the top third and accepted last week. I have a question though - I am interested in going to Buffalo. How much time after we are notified to we have to send in a deposit? I am also still on other waitlists and waiting for a decision from one more school - if I tell Buffalo that I am attending, then am I disqualified at the other schools?

No, you can withdraw from Buffalo if you are accepted off the waitlist at a different school. However, being that it is past May 15 you will lose your 100 dollar deposit if you withdraw.
