Good luck to those of you interviewing today...

Enjoy the moment... typically stress free at IUSM interviews...

Thanks for the quick response! Will they contact me if they deem my letter packet to be missing a personal evaluation? I only ask because I'm a bit later in the game in applying to IU, and I'd rather not have to hold off on applying for 2-3 weeks to give my letter writer time to complete the evaluation. Or would it be better to submit my primary and add the letter later?
I don't know if they'll contact you. Looks like you have your evaluation taken care of, which is a good thing. Just make sure they understand what they're supposed to write about (it's actually in the form).

To other poster about the academic professor - it could work if they highlighted what the school wants to hear. Again, they literally give a prompt for the writer to follow. If you have a volunteer coordinator or someone in a clinical setting that you've worked with, or someone who can really highlight your selfless trait/good character, then go for it. Hell, I actually knew someone who had their therapist write one.

black suits in a crowded gang walking around campus - reminder it's interview day here

So Im worried. After reading this thread I feel like I must not have a shot. Im an OOS. How do they really feel about that? I probably will be interviewing in October.

Calm down. You got the secondary packet so you have your interview unless you go out and run over 15 pedestrians. Read the interview feedback and prepare for those questions 👍

The interview wasn't as bad as I thought. However, it was difficult to read my interviewer at the end. Questions ranged from Why IUSM (obviously), to how would you change the health care industry? The interview definitely lasted 45 minutes. At the info session, they mentioned they wanted to accept 328.
For those who interviewed, do you know when we hear back? I was given the impression, they won't start REVIEWING interviewed aplicants until around November-December. Because they wanted to get more of a "feel for the pool". What do you guys think?

Was your interview this year any different from last year's? I'm OOS as well and I'm dying to get into IUSM so I hope they'll take more OOS for the goal of 328. (I'm assuming you mean they want 328 to enroll since that's around where they've been. In that case they'll have to accept more than 328.)

During my interview, I was told exactly how the decision process works. He said that the committee meets once a month (I think he said at the end of each month) to make decisions. A computer generates a list of applicants who are totally done with their applications (including the interview), and puts them in an order based on MCAT score, GPA, and an interview score. The committee then goes through this list, and typically gets through around 40 applicants. They then send out decisions on the 15th of the following month. That suggests that decisions could be sent out as early as October 15th for those of us who just interviewed.

That's correct and its exactly how it was done last year... but I also heard that they do an aggregate of the interview (20%), GPA (40%) & MCAT (40%) and weight it over 100%... and that's how they select people...also they send out acceptances on the 15th of each month, so if you are accepted (reg applicants), we'll be finding out around 10/18 or 11/18.... for EDPs, you'll find out around 9/30 (when you get an email for background check - per AMCAS, this is only done for EDP this early - all else will get this background check done next year when you'll accepted this as your only school)

Thank you both for the info! ... just hope i get the secondary and actually make it to that step.

I just got my date 9/29; that came way faster than I thought.

Thanks ahead of time for anyone that can help me out. I got the scheduled date for my interview, but I already had another one scheduled for that day. The only way someone can reschedule is to be put on a waitlist and have no guarantee of being offered another spot. I was wondering if anyone has been through this and if it's likely that I'll get another spot. Thanks again!

I just got my email saying that i'll be notified with 4-6 weeks.
How do I look as an IS 3.66s 3.74c 31L?

What happened on the writing section? 😕 I mean, I don't know if adcoms will care, considering your MCAT score is better than the matriculant at that school. Good stats 👍

Yep.. no one really cares about the writing section...

Lol. It wasn't even the 10th percentile. I took the Kaplan prep course and the practice tests never graded the writing section so i didn't know how i was doing and just assumed i was doing fine. i was advised to take a writing class, hehe, to show adcoms that I recognize my weakness and am working to improve it.

Did anybody get a invitation for a reception on the september 29th?

I got this letter today "Your application for admission to the Indiana University School of Medicine is now eligible for review by the Admissions Committee. Acceptance letters will be mailed on approximately the 15th of the month, October through March, and at intervals thereafter as necessary. Nonacceptance letters will be mailed on a periodic basis throughout the year. No notification indicates that your application remains under consideration. Everyone will receive a decision by June 1. Please remember to have an official transcript sent at the end of each grading period."

I'm not EDP, so I'm a little hopeful; Now let the waiting begin... each month until I get accepted by my fav school, IUSM (even though I'm OOS).... hahaha....

Hey Jamiu, I got the same letter too! Weren't we in the same interview group?

AAA AA, so you are my competition... how can I screw you over? lol. Just kidding... we must have been in the same group because I interviewed on 8/25. I would say there was about 50 students on that same day.

Finger's crossed lol. Hoping for good news soon.

This place is soo quiet.... I can hear my echo, lol....

And yet this seems to be the school specific thread I check first. Gah, I hope I get an interview!

Same here....but I dont know why I'm checking since I've already had my interview...

good luck man... hope you get an interview...

got rejected from indiana, before they even received my mcat scores. do they not like oos applicants that much?

According to this site, they interviewed 12% of OOS applicants. It's hard to say how many of those they accepted, but their OOS enrollment sits around 50 people (about 1/6 of the entering class) every year.

From: http://www.medicalschoolsinusa.com/ this is what you get:

Total admissions data...............3569 applied, 912 interviewed, 501 were accepted, 308 enrolled
In-state admissions data ..........675 applied, 563 interviewed, 322 were accepted, 262 enrolled
Out-of-state admissions data.....2894 applied, 349 interviewed, 179 were accepted, 46 enrolled
Women's admissions data..........1548 applied, 400 interviewed, 227 were accepted, 135 enrolled
Minority admissions data............N/A
International admissions data.....251 applied, 29 interviewed, 18 were accepted, 6 enrolled

So for OOS applicants, they accept 51.3% 🙂

IS people, how long did it take to receive a response from iusm?

They're going to give me a heart attack soon. Completed weeks ago but I get an email saying they don't have my non-science LOR...

I call them and they say "Oh, no, we do. Sorry!"

Now I don't know if they're just pranking me or what :scared:

I'm an MS1 at IU and am incredibly bored in biochemistry...thus here I am.

First, OOS students have to understand that IU is the ONLY medical school in the state. I know it's huge, but Indiana is like the 17th biggest state in the country and has several great undergrad schools. The average in-state applicant is pretty strong. So you have to understand that if you are a 3.8/31 OOS there are 3 in-state applicants just like you and they are given preference (and rightly so). That being said, IU does take quite a few OOS every year so if you are lucky enough to snag a spot you should feel good about yourself.

IU is a great school and I can answer questions if you guys would like, depending on how much time I have.

yeah, i was just disappointed they didn't care to see my new mcat scores, would've liked to live in indy for a couple years 🙁

good luck though to those of you that got invites!!

It sure is a long wait though, and I have a strong feeling my wait would be even longer than most. 🙁

Well, some of it makes me worry because the "forms" state that you have to have them signed/returned within 10 days of receipt of the secondary (which is WELL past). So, if I had called and they'd said "Oh, right, but it's too late, so it doesn't matter". Well...

Thanks! Haha, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to handle this rejection (or else I'd worry about my coping skills...). Good luck to you, too, with Indiana and your other schools! : )

Fretting already started for EDP guys; 10/1/2010 is the decision date for this folks

About 8 more days for EDP folks to start hearing back from IU... you guys must be really stoked about that....october 15th is gonna be scary for me - that's for sure; I'll probably take the day off and not get on the internet at all.

Anyone know if acceptances will be snail mail as they did the last couple of years?? or they've switched to email/phone call based? i.e. if you have inside connection with IUSM. :xf:

Just got an acceptance packet from IU today. I'm an IS early decision applicant, so it's probably a little earlier than most, but the acceptances should be working their way out here pretty soon. Best of luck everyone!

WOW, now that was fast... I think this is the earliest they've ever sent an acceptance letter....per IUSM website, EDP's were to be notified on 10/01/2010... see:

Important Dates

  • General application: June 1 - December 15
  • Early Decision application: June 1 - August 1
    • Early decision acceptance notification: October 1
  • Interviews: August - March
  • Acceptance notification: 15th of each month October - March
    • All admission decision notifications will be issued by June 1
    • Orientation for new students: mid-August
  • School begins: mid-August

This year must be a special year... since interviewed started super early too. Congratulations man~!
In any event, now that you are an insider.... let the rest of us know the secret in getting in 😀

It definitely took me by surprise - I wasn't expecting anything until next week at the earliest. Hopefully some OOS letters will start getting sent out soon too. I get the idea that the whole process has been moved forward about a week relative to last year's application cycle.

I think you are right... it's definitely faster this year.... on the other hand AMCAS has a rule that regular acceptances don't get given until 10/15... so I don't think IU can control that. Looking at last years thread, it seems that OOS acceptances didn't start rolling out until mid November, so maybe it will really be Oct this year.

By the way, what campus are you choosing? All have very similar curriculum, except the Indianapolis one.

Hey I have an interview at IU on Wednesday. It's my first one. Does anyone know what to expect?

Firstly, congrats! Makes me wish I had just gone EDP since I have heard nothing from other schools at this point and this is my top choice .

I'm hoping IU just doesn't care and starts mailing all acceptances earlier (But I am getting ahead of myself...I don't know what'll happen.)

Yea, I meant faster as in relative to last year. Being EDP puts me in a different timeline relative to others.

As far as campus choice, I really mulled over possibly going to Muncie because the block schedule seems interesting, but Indianapolis just seems too good to pass up. I've lived in a small-town atmosphere all my life, I think it's time for a change.
