I think that they meet a couple of times a month. I had looked at the pattern before and that's what I figured out. But I may be wrong though.

you cant get accepted in september, unless its early decision, and if its early decision, its binding...so shouldn't you be 100% positive your attending, not "pretty sure"

I planned to defer entrance to med school for a year in order to teach english in Korea. My concern is that if I get off the waitlist, it would probably be in may right? Would this be too late to apply for deferral?

I'm entirely guessing, but I don't think telling a school that you plan to not enter that year is a compelling argument to accept you off the waitlist. Seems like a good reason for a rejection, actually. That said, the right thing to do would be to tell them regardless.

i hate to burst your presumptuous bubble... but if you read previous pages on this thread you'll learn that the chances of getting off the hopkins waitlist are extremely slim

Haha, I was about to make a umad? post until I reread that guy's statement. I don't think he meant to imply that he was certainly going to get off the waitlist. I think he just meant that wasn't an important question.

Not sure if you're neurotic, but you sure do sound conceited. How? well, the fact that you don't realize you were being insensitive is a pretty good indicator. Yeah you sure don't sugar coat what you say; you do the exact opposite.

Sammyseal CLEARLY said that his question wasn't a matter about getting off the waitlist. He said that IF he were to get off the waitlist...

Not only did you ignore what he was trying to say, you insulted him by calling him presumptuous. Then you wrote that his chances of getting off the waitlist are slim, which is true, but was completely unnecessary to answer Sammyseal's question. You also suggested that he go read past threads and implied Sammyseal was an idiot for even considering the possibility that he would get accepted off the waitlist.

I interviewed on 11/4 and they said we could expect a decision sometime around 12/10. Assuming they take the same amount of time for you I'd say pretty soon.

I interviewed 10/15 and was told that a batch of decisions had just gone out, so we were in for a longish wait given where our date fell in the particular cycle. I don't recall an exact date-- I believe they just said "early december"... so I'm going to try to hold off being too anxious until then 🙂

My student tour guide told me that there is a separate committee for the Thursday and Friday interviewees and that they evaluate all the candidates from that day interviewed over the past month together. So if a batch of acceptances just went out and it included individuals from the 10/7 interview date, then it would seem that people from October 14/15th will hear around the same time as people from November 11th/12th. Expect to hear back in December?

Any chance I would get any JHU love submitting my secondary application five days before(today) the deadline or would it be a waste of money?

I just withdraw a ton of interview invites from other schools(pitt, emory, etc) but somehow I feel like I'm missing out by not applying here. Balanced 35 sGPA 3.8.

Definitely APPLY if you LIKE it! You honestly have nothing to lose but some money (which can be a legitimate concern ). I applied to a couple of schools later in the cycle (by late I mean the absolute last day to submit the AMCAS) and I got some love from one or two, so you never know. You honestly could have that "IT" factor that JHU is looking for.

Grades DO get you in. In fact, they're a big part of why people get in. Why else are the averages pushing close to 3.9 and 36 at top-tier schools?

You're right in that grades do get you in the door. And ECs get you into the school. However, without grades, no level of good ECs will get you into the school (unless you cured cancer or solved world hunger).

So it's best to say you need BOTH grades and ECs.

It's not impossible for you to get in and it won't hurt you to apply, but...the averages are close to 3.9 and 36. Almost all Hopkins applicants have done years of research before applying and most have done some form of volunteer work as well.

If you have an explanation for your lower numbers and if you have some amazing and unique ECs, then you should go for it. If not, I'd still go for it (as they might be randomly impressed with your essay/life story), but wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

You actually aren't disagreeing with me I don't think. The point of my statement is that unless you have the grades etc. You can't get in the door, and thus get in. BUT the thing is there are hundreds of applicants, far more then will ever be accepted to hopkins, that have that 3.8 and 35+ mcat. Thus you need around those scores to even get looked at. At lower schools those numbers would be enough to get you in on their own. At hopkins though those numbers form the baseline, so the deciding factor is EC"s

It's good that Johns Hopkins and UPenn are your top choices and I don't want to dissuade you from applying, especially since I don't know your life story or extracurriculars at all. But at the same time, I want to point out certain numbers so you don't have completely unrealistic expectations going into the application cycle.

The national averages for students who were accepted to all medical schools are something like 3.66 GPA and I think around a 32 MCAT score. You're standing at a 3.3-3.4 GPA and a 33 MCAT. GPA-wise, you're a quite a bit below the national average for ALL medical schools including much much lower ranked medical schools, and a bit above for the MCAT. Even with a 35-36 MCAT score, numbers-wise, you would be around average among applicants who got into medical school.

Now Johns Hopkins has an average of 3.9 and 36, meaning that roughly half the student score higher than that, give or take a few % points since we're talking about mean and not median. A 36 MCAT, while a really great MCAT score, is barely average for this school and that's not even taking your GPA into account. And according to MSAR, last year, person with the lowest GPA (but got accepted into Hopkins) was sitting around a 3.65 - it's likely that this person had a really high MCAT (maybe 40+) or had amazing extracurricular activities/life story.

And for Johns Hopkins, 94% of applicants accepted have research experience, 91% have medically related work, and 78% have volunteer/community service work. Research, small bits of service here and there, and shadowing/volunteering in a hospital don't really make you unique.

I don't know what you mean by "decent" chance, but one of my classmates who had 3.97 sGPA, 40+ MCAT, 3 years of patient care volunteering, and a couple publications got rejected from Hopkins a while back. It's possible that she completely bombed her interview and it's entirely possible that she lied to me about her scores, but I think it speaks more about the caliber of students applying to Johns Hopkins. There are thousands of students with 3.85+ and 35+.

Of course, if you can have really crazy ECs, letters of recs, and life story, then you might be one of the few exceptions who get in without amazing numbers so if you think you have a compelling story, go for it! But numbers-wise, things are not looking peachy for you if you're looking specifically to get into Johns Hopkins.

And yes, the same would apply for UPenn as well.

Apply to Hopkins, and Upenn, and wherever else you want to go to, but make sure to apply broadly...to schools that have numbers closer to your own and if you get that 36, to schools with lower scores as well.
