How cold is it in Detroit in December? I heard the forecast for early this week was snowy. I'm from New Jersey lol so it's a bit chilly here but that can usually be overcome with a sweater or a thick hoodie. Would a wool coat in Detroit this time of year be overkill?

High of 41 and Low of 31 for Monday. I have recently had to switch over from a fleece to a thicker jacket. A wool coat might be a bit drastic, but it all depends on you really.

Just dropped my deposit into the mailbox. See you guys in July/August! To those that are still in the waiting process, at whatever stage that may be, hang in there. It is a very challenging and draining process, emotionally and mentally. This is, in fact, my second application cycle with drastically different results compared to last year. The only real difference between last year's application and now was my state of mind. And I am a firm believer that it has a significant impact on the outcome of your applications, whether being the interview or between-the-lines on your written communications with the schools. It is very easy to become negative, and boy did I do that last year! I blamed myself, others, the process, etc...However, I re-evaluated myself and realized that, had I been accepted right away last year, I wouldn't have been prepared mentally/emotionally. I was crushed after being held on the waitlists and outright rejected from other schools. Though this is an extremely important procedure that every aspiring doc. must go through, don't let it get the best of you. Don't take it personally. Remember that you will be beginning a rigorous program once you do get admitted that demands you to be on top of your game. Don't trash the biggest investment you have made thus far-yourself. Good luck.

just got an interview email for Feb 10

is there any sort of tuition breaks or anything here? I was thinking of applying, I'm a CDN, but 61,500 for tuition is definitely a lot of money.

Not that I know of. You'll probably need to apply to private schools to hope for cheaper education.

got an interview invite for january! Doesn't say when it is, but I'm assuming it is the letter to come. I was beginning to lose hope since I was complete in mid-August.

I was just invited to interview on January 9th. 🙂 Anyone else also scheduled for this date? I am Canadian too, and boy is the tuition STEEP for international students. Are any Canadians from Ontario aware of how much OSAP will lend us for U.S. med schools?

Thanks.

I would like to know this too!

Declined my interview invite! Good luck everyone!

Does anyone have advice on whether its better to try and 'take charge' in your interview to get more of your message across, or rather let them guide the discussion and keep things more conversational?

Usually its about a month after your interview invite. At least last year I got mine on feb 23rd and my interview was on march 28th. Same thing happened for my friend last year.

As per the last post in this thread, at least for me it was a real simple interview and my friend would agree with me on this.

It was basically answering questions about your app. Nothing really much about ethical issues. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

A wool coat will probably be alright if you aren't walking around too much outside. The standing temperatures can get pretty chilly in January and February, and the buildings create some killer wind tunnels, so make sure to get something to cover your ears!

Earmuffs are gods gift. I'd invest in some or at least a jacket that has a hoodie

Got my interview invite for tomorrow (December 12 @ 10am) last week.
Hope to meet some of you there!
Fingers crossed!

Good luck to everyone!

Has there been a consensus on the "best" places to live near campus? I am trying to put a list together of some nice lofts/apartments. My main priority would be finding a quiet place.

I would say Park Sheldon, or if you can get a loft to rent from someone in Woodward Place. Those are 2 of the best that are in downtown itself.

I'd stay away from gross University Towers where I live. So not living there next year. They have huge roach problems, are practically a dorm to say the least.

Studio One right behind UT has had some good reviews from some students and so has Ellington Place on Mack avenue by the pharm school.

If you are talking out of Detroit city proper but nearby within 20-30 min. I would say look in Grosse Pointe or more often than not more people live in Royal Oak because its a young people town, not far from Madison Heights where there are good asian restaurants and stuff and a decent mall, and several bars which are the sites of post exam parties.

There are some other lofts nearby on streets like Garfield Ave behind the VA that some rent from and like too. If you got that orientation book that they gave I'd look in there as it has some places mentioned too.

PS if you are from canada a lot live in windsor as well.

for those that got accepted, did your letters or email state any requirements in terms of maintaining certain marks? Or do you just need to have the pre-req and your degree requirements done?

I know some schools ask that you get atleast a C in your pre-reqs.

Thanks

Accepted today as well!

Tought decisions ahead of me...😱

Well congrats to everyone that has been accepted. Does anyone know how late the interview process goes on here? I remember hearing that Wayne accepts 1/7 of their class at every decision date so theoretically it does not hurt you to interview late, but how late into it are we now?

This was the decision day I got in on last year, and even though I'm a Jew, I thought it was the best Christmas present I could have ever asked for. I literally jumped up out of my chair, fist in the air, and nearly took out the ceiling fan which was going above me (which is still a bit shaky) when I opened the pdf from the decision email. Congrats everyone who got in! I hope to see you guys next year!

April is the final "decision date," and we have had decision dates in October, November and December so far, so there are 4 dates left. 3/7 of the class has been chosen (less than that considering those who will drop May 15th or later) so 4/7 of the spots they will offer initially are still open. It seems they have lots of wait list movement over the summer, so good luck to everyone on the alternate list!

Accepted, very funny email w attachment, are we going to get more info in the mail?

I am out of town for 3 weeks so I won't get to see anything in the mail for a while. Is there anything important or time sensitive in the mail that I will need to take care of? Also is there a facebook group for the class of 2016?

I got placed on the alternate list.
When you say 1/7 of the class. Do you guys mean 1/7* 290?
For the 2011 entering class, , it shows overall they made 515 admission offers.

Is it correct to assume these number imply a lot of movement in the waitlist?

Yes, an official letter with information about your deposit will be mailed to you via snail mail. Keep in mind that Wayne doesn't offer refunds of the deposit, in case they aren't one of your top choices.

I believe they want the deposit and letter accepting the seat within three weeks, though I have heard there is wiggle room available. If you are worried, simply shoot the admissions office an e-mail, including your application ID number, saying you are interested in the spot but are out of town and will send in the deposit as soon as you return.

They don't say if any extra seats are offered in the initial 7 offerings. They could predict that, say, over 100 people will drop every year, so they give out a total of 400 offers instead of the 290 they have seats for, and take any dropped seats above this number off the wait list. Or they could just offer 290 seats, period, and take someone off the wait list for every drop. I haven't seen any information about their exact process.

There seems to be a lot of wait list movement, based on past threads and postings. :luck:

Generally what they do is accept 1/7th of the class each admissions round not including those who ultimately get off the waitlist.

Now whether they over accept or not is something I would have to find out from the admissions office for you guys. I'm not sure if they accept just 290 at first or more and then wait til spots open up for waitlist. But the 1/7th refers to filling up the class before any waitlist movement occurs.

They do however have a high waitlist movment amount primarily due to the fact that they are quite costly for a OOSer and for in staters who either got in Umich or other schools they preferred over wayne or detroit area.

In my letter, it said they take in 1/7 of the class. The email said that's about 40 people.

This was the reason I thought it would be 1/7 of 290 people.
I hope this is true.

I was recently put on the alternate list as well 🙁🙁🙁. For those of you that got offers after being wait listed, is it normally in a month or so, or after multiple months? or mostly in march-ish?

Interviewed on the 12th, accepted the 21st. Cannot wait, already have the anatomy notes from this year.

Most waitlist movement will occur on or after May 15. That is the final date to hold more than one acceptance. With Wayne, there is an INCREDIBLE amount of waitlist movement in May and June. There's less in July, but there are even people who get pulled off close to orientation.

Hang in there, your time will come . . . in May most likely.

I would like to echo the above as someone who was taken off the waitlist last year mid june!!!

Anyone know if an update such as getting a first author paper in a respected journal is welcomed/encouraged by Wayne state pre-interview?

Will be a Canadian applicant affect your position on the waitlist?
I got placed on the waitlist on the 21st, what should I do?
( Or rather what did you do to get off the waitlist?)

I believe Wayne encourages update letters. How much influence they will have on your acceptance chances is anyone's guess, but sending one certainly won't hurt you (unless you are being ridiculous about how often/when you send them).

I was wondering what kind of scholarships Wayne has and when you should apply for them and when they usually give the scholarships. I've been accepted to Wayne and really want to go there but I have 2 other interviews coming up this month (MSU and Oakland). I so want to withdraw my applications and just relax but what if I interview at the other schools and get a scholarship? I don't know much about med school scholarships but I'm assuming they are hard to get? Would you guys just stick with Wayne or do the other interviews? Any info about scholarships would be helpful. Thanks!
