Hey guys, I am sure this question was asked before, but I am asking it again here. I am outside of the country and internet here is really slow, so I wasn't able to read through the thread...

So I got this email about a month ago, "Your file is complete and has passed a primary screening. This means you are in the pool of applicants who may be invited to interview with CMS. However, this does not guarantee an invitation and you may be invited to interview or declined an interview at anytime during the admissions process." Is this what you guys call the 'small pool'?

Also, in general how long does it take to get off from the 'small pool' and get invited for not-guaranteed interview?

Thank you for your time!

Yes, that is what we call the small pool. And it varies the amount of time to get out. It depends mostly on how competitive you are. And as a late in the cycle applicant, you're going to have to be even more competitive. Last year I was in a similar situation and never got invited and when I reapplied this year with an almost identical app I was in the small pool for like a week before they invited me to interview (this was back in August). Anyway, good luck! And try not to stress too much about it! Easier said than done I know haha

Their latest email in Dec for the small poolers did say that they are sending out IIs a few weeks prior to the actual Interview date, and that this will continue through April... so I think there is hope for us small-poolers!

So...their interview season lasts into May? That's strange (but good to hear).

No most schools quit interviewing in April. The committees need to have time to accept everyone they will accept before the May 15th deadline

I got an email from them on Jan 8 saying Dear Applicant,

Your file is complete and has passed a primary screening. This means you are in the pool of applicants who may be invited to interview with CMS. However, this does not guarantee an invitation and you may be invited to interview or declined an interview at anytime during the admissions process.

CMS is interviewing from September- April, with invitations being sent out via email. Please note additional information or letters of intent may not be submitted until an invitation to interview has been extented. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank you,

CMS Admissions

Does anybody else got the email so late on the cycle and still got the interview? I am not sure how hopeful I am!!

I think that everyone who applied and are small-pooled got this email over the holidays.
PS: I talked to the admission office, and they told me that it is a "could be interviewed from now to April".

😕 That just looks like the regular small pool notification to me. If not, then I didn't get one...🙁

Call Audrey and ask. That's kind of a rare one they might take it

I received a call back after leaving a message. All she said was that I was still in the small pool and they don't take pre interview updates, including 1st author pubs 🙁 It was worth a try though. *sigh*

Sent from my iPhone using SDN Mobile app. Please excuse brevity and/or typos.

Hey. I am sorry to cause any confusion. Yes, yours is a small-pool email. The one which I mentioned was a little bit different. It still is a please-be-patient email though.

being patient sucks

Amen. Does anyone by any chance know how MLK day affects the committee meeting this month? Was it this week? Is it in 2 weeks? So much for being patient....haha

being patient sucks

+1...

- file complete beginning of August
- entered screening beginning of August
- small pooled end of August
- Received the "may or may not be interviewed email" mid-December

Aaanddd nothing since then :boom:

What does it mean if you don't get the "please be patient" email in Dec? 🙁

Maybe you don't have be as patient as the others because you are gonna be interviewed sooner than everybody else! Just stay positive! 2012 is over, and we are still here! 🙂

This is the case.

Small pooled just means they might interview you. Last year, I was small-pooled in september, interviewed in April, and accepted in May. Don't read into things. Just chill. There's no way to know what's going to happen.

That's an optimistic way of looking at it!

Just got my "small-pooled" email today. how small is this small pool? 😕

Yeah, it sure doesn't make you feel special. Have there been any recent invites? I feel like I haven't seen any movement in a month or so, on SDN at least.

Someone with the school said that they would primarily interview students from their post-bac programs from now to March. They will interview the rest in March and April.

Dear lord that's a long time to wait! *sigh* Thanks for the info, though, much appreciated.

Hi! I got an interview here in Feb and was wondering if anyone who has been could give me hotel and transportation recommendations. Also I assume the have a place to store a suitcase for people leaving right after the interview yes? Thanks! And good luck everyone!

Congrats! Would you mind letting us know when and in what format you received the II? Also, would you mind sharing residency and stats? Feel free to PM me. No worries if you're too bashful.

Just don't stay at the days inn in town. It was pretty terrible when I stayed there. As for transportation, flying into o'hare would be easiest, as it has a nearly direct highway connection to north Chicago. And I'm sure they have somewhere to put luggage when you get there. It's a fairly common occurrence

Got an email II on Jan 8th. Out of state, 36, 3.9.

Okay thanks for the tip!! Anyone had any good hotel experiences near the school....? 😛

No II lately? C'mon CMS!

The adcom is likely meeting today. They usually meet every third Monday of each month but last week was MLK day. I'm not positive if the adcom is the group that sends out the II but that could be why

Oh, that's cool. Good luck everyone!

Good luck today everyone! Fingers crossed to those waiting to hear & those on alternate lists hoping for movement!

3.9/36 interviewing at RFU?? Argh. This is why it is so hard to get into med school. There is 0% chance you end up matriculating here.

Yeah, that was my thought when reading that too. There's no doubt Dingo deserves that II, much more than I do that's for sure, but in general don't schools want a high yield and not waste inviting people who won't go there? I've gone on rants before in the panic thread on not understanding why the top 10% applicants get 10+ interviews each when they can only select one school. It seems like a waste of time and resources for schools interviewing them. I feel like a ranking system, like the one for residency applications, would come in handy for both sides in the med school application cycle.

But congrats Dingo, this wasn't meant in any way as a slight against you.

I sooo agree with this! And we could have a match day rather than waiting to hear at random times throughout the cycle!

I haven't gotten an acceptance yet, so I'm allowed to be nervous too! Also, my 3.9 isn't that exciting cause I was a music major at a state school. lol

Alright haha. If you do not have any acceptances yet, I totally get you going to interview here. But probably >90% (possibly higher) of people with your stats that interview at RFU will go elsewhere.

Good luck.

Remember that people choose schools for a wide variety of reasons. As aspiring physicians, we would all be well served to realize that applicants, like patients, do things for reasons beyond the obvious. If applicants acted upon school reputation alone, why would Harvard have to fill their class twice over each year?

Many candidates will choose a school based upon factors that cannot be so easily expressed (funding, family, relationships, location, familiarity, aspirations of a specific specialty, specific faculty interests, etc).

I was fortunate enough to put up some pretty impressive stats myself, and I am seriously considering CMS. Sometimes, there is more to the story than just the US News ranking.

You are 100% correct, I was just talking about how from the schools perspective they have to play the odds a little bit. If a school like RFU interviewed every one of the top applicants because each one might have "other reasons" for wanting to go there then they'd be handing out a lot more interviews. But I agree with what your saying, hence my "ranking" idea.

That's the point of the waitlist too. Keep in mind that the overwhelming majority of people interviewed end up on the waitlist. That's why in that email telling you you're on the waitlist they make sure to include "we think you would make an excellent physician" (something along those lines) because they mean it. They understand the majority of people accepted will not attend, so they keep others in mind in the hopes that they can fill their class after may 15th when all those accepted commit to other schools for a variety of reasons. I love that match idea by the way. But I'd bet there's too many applicants for something like that 🙁

Yes, there is space for luggage, coats, etc. while you interview. As for hotels, I stayed at the Courtyard Chicago Waukegan/Gurnee when I interviewed, and it was nice. Haven't been there since, but it is close to the school and I believe they still have a free shuttle that will take you to campus in the morning.

The take away is that the interviewing process is inefficient for everyone except the very top applicants and the very top schools. This is why a ranking process would be excellent. Remember the the residency match is something like 11,000 candidates ( too lazy to check that figure).

Agreed, but the poster I was originally referring to was OOS, so I assumed no family ties or relationships since he/she didn't mention anything else. And yes there is scholarships and other specific reasons, but for many applicants they are simply picking schools based on a combination of rankings, price tag, and location.

Edit: There are other factors to look for like "fit" and professors, and how you liked your interview but all those things can be misleading or not indicative of what your actual experience will be.

Talking about fairness of the process, life itself is not that fair. It is just time to practice getting used to it.

The fact that "life is not fair" does not preclude the process from being tweaked to benefit everyone.
