"Did you take any leaves of absence or significant breaks from your undergraduate education? (Do not include time off after graduation.)"

I will have been working in a Genetics Diagnostics lab for two years by the time Fall 2013 rolls around...are they saying that this is "time off after graduation"? I wouldn't really call working full time "time off", and it's an important part of my application...so I have no idea how to answer this! It is described on AMCAS and is listed as one of my most meaningful...but still...not sure what to do! :scared:

Damsel in distress, here!

I'd answer no unless you left college to do something and then resumed it after. Most schools ask what you've been doing since graduation during the interview or elsewhere on their secondary. I'm sure they know you've been working at the lab since you put it in your primary.

I agree! For this question, they are only looking for significant lapses in your undergraduate education (ie; time off before you graduated from college, which might indicate some sort of hardship and/or academic difficulty).

My status just changed from "you are currently under the screening process" to "your application is ready!". They sound excited lol. Did anybody that got an II have their status follow this same progression?

Mine is still at the screening status. When were you complete? I was complete mid-September; not sure what it means.

We freaked out about that a few pages back. I hate to burst your bubble, but I suspect that we've been silently rejected.

That would be kinda bogus to get rejected this early considering I just graduated from their SMP and did very well in it.

Also I was complete like Aug 28th ish.

Yeah, I mean I think its hard to truly decipher what these statuses mean. I still have the "under screening process" but was complete around 8/25.

I wouldn't overthink the statuses. It looks like Tufts is due to send out some more invites so hopefully soon we'll find out!

Does anyone who has interviewed remember when they said we should be hearing? I don't think it was this week, but now I'm confusing my interviews and can't quite remember. Thanks!

On my day they said we'd hear by the third week of november, but they would try for the first week. I interviewed the first week of october.

Anyone who submitted secondary around mid/late Sept get an interview invite yet?

Have some questions for those that already attended the interview.

1) Did you rent a car or is it much easier to get cabs?

2) Any hotel recommendations? Are there even ones that provide shuttle services to the HSC? I would like to stay at a place that's close to the interview site and not too cheap/expensive.

3) Does the school provide a shuttle to the airport after the interview?

4) Anything else that you can share?

Thanks!

I've stayed at the Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge and it was excellent and reasonably priced. 👍

been complete since late august - currently in screening process - has anyone sent a loi before getting an interview?

Based on this thread it doesn't seem like any regular MD invites were given out other than those on 9/18

I have a friend who went to tufts that got one the first week of October.

1) Taking the subway from the airport to Tufts Medical Center is probably the cheapest yet still reliable way.

2) I stayed with a student host who lived in Chinatown, so it was free and down the street from the Sackler building (where you'll have your interviews).

3) Nope, but I would just take the subway back to the airport.

4) Don't stress too much about the interview! Also, the students and admissions staff were all very friendly.

The Doubletree is right next to Tufts Medical and has a Tufts rate. Just have to ask for it. I think the Hyatt down the near Downtown Crossing has a Tufts rate too. I recommend the Doubletree; really close, spacious, and comfortable.

As for transport you can take the silver line (I think SL1) to south station you can then walk to Tufts or take the red line to the orange line at DT Crossing and go on the orange to Tufts medical stop. Or you can take the airport shuttle to the blue line, hop on the orange at state street and get off at Tufts Medical. Or take a cab, should cost a little less than $30

Driving in Boston isn't that great if you don't know your way around. Lots of one-way streets and weird street set ups. And parking is crazy expensive! I recommend the T or a cab over a rental. If you choose the rental get a GPS

when did you submit your secondary? did they contact you via e-mail? Congrats !

Does anyone know if Tufts is receptive to update letters or emails? I have recently obtained a job as a scribe and would like to inform them

There is no harm in sending an update letter as long as you think it is something that will actually improve your application (i.e do you consider getting the job significant) and making sure you don't send multiple update letters which become irritating.

As for people wondering about staying in Boston. There are a number of hotels within walking distance of Tufts, I am not sure about rates, but if you contact the admissions office they can let you know about any special deals. Apart from that, staying with a med student is an option, though for people who prefer their own space this may not be the best. Travel time varies based on where you stay, but it is very easy to get to Tufts via public transportation or walking. Personally, if you are not in walking distance, I would recommend someplace on the Orange, Red, or Silver Line. These tend to be the most consistent subway lines, whereas the Green line runs late more often than the others.

Also, don't rent a car. Driving in Boston is a nightmare even when you live here, and it is not worth unless you are way out in the suburbs.

A couple notes on the Doubletree:
- currently under construction
- must pay for wifi
- if you drive parking costs $40 per night and an extra $20 if you pick up your car past 2pm
- however, you do get $100 off your rate
- VERY walkable to get to Tufts

Would you recommend emailing with a word doc attachment or snail mail?

Hey,

So I marked that i was going to apply to the joint md/mph program, and I submitted my secondary on August 21. I was told that my application would be reviewed separately from my mph application, and my online status said "ready for reveiw." So I assumed that my application was ready, and there was no rush for the mph application. I submitted my mph (after putting if off for a while) around ten days ago, and then I just got an email saying now my application is complete and will be reviewed. Did they actually wait until my mph application was in to put my secondary under review?? Or was that email just a formality??

I just checked my email and I noticed that there is a difference between submitting the app and completing it. However, I noticed that both the secondary submitted and app complete emails were sent at the same exact time (and a few minutes before my mph application was submitted). I think you're okay.

Ah okay. I was just confused because I had everything in (letters, mcat, and secordary app) in by sept 1, and now it's saying that the entire application is complete and will be reviewed. I called and asked, and I was told that I would be reviewed before my mph application was in. So now I'm really afraid I screwed myself over haha

Don't worry about it. It's a new system they're using and the kinks have not been smoothed out yet. If you follow the deadlines and everything is there, then don't worry about the statuses.

Hey guys, so I submitted my Tufts secondary 08/14, but I still didn't turn in my MPH application thinking it won't affect interview invite decisions. But now that I haven't heard back from Tufts, I'm beginning to wonder if not turning in my MPH app is holding the adcom from making any interview decisions about me. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Thanks in advance.

Hard to say. I've been complete since 8/17 and heard nothing from them as well but did not apply to their MPH program.

I have been in correspondance with someone from the Admisisons Dept. from Tufts, and actually asked them specifically about this, since I was undecided about applying to the MPH program. Basically, they don't acknowldge, care, or even look at whether you're applying MD/MPH until AFTER you've been accepted to the MD program... So your MPH application, whether submitted, complete, withdrawn or anything else you can think of, has no bearing or influence on the timing or responses to your MD application.

I don't know if they mentioned this to you as well but at my interview day they said the MPH applications are rolling, so while you may not be considered for the MD/MPH until after you have an MD acceptance, it is still best to get the MPH application in early because the spots are limited and you might end up on a MD/MPH waitlist if you wait too long. Not sure when the MPH application actually becomes that competitive but the MPH director who spoke with us implied that getting them in before the new year was preferable.

No longer listed as "under screening". Is this bad? I think this is bad. This is bad.

Same here-- I was complete 9/7.

Perhaps we will get some news tomorrow? I'm so tired of waiting

Don't worry guys, I sent them an email from my several e-mail accounts demanding an explanation. We'll get to the bottom of this.
