2013-2014 Boston University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got rejected too. This was supposed to be a match for me. 3.9/ 32. If I can't get an interview here how am I supposed to get interviews anywhere else🙁

When 10,000 applicants apply and most of them are qualified, the school's gotta make some cuts. They can't interview and accept everyone, so it basically comes down to the luck of the draw. That's why you hear everyone say apply broadly - reach schools will interview you, safety schools will pass you over, and you have no idea where you might get in.

Rejected 3.88, 30 and I wrote the optional essay

I keep stressing this on SDN but I see it over and over again. Schools care about more than you meeting their average stats! You are not "supposed" to be a match anywhere. There are no "guarantees" it comes down to who is reviewing your application and did it captivate them AS A WHOLE, rather than some bar that your LizzyM score passed.

+1

This process is about as arbitrary as any can get. With 10,000+ applicants BU (and other schools) can be as picky as they want. There are thousands with 35+ MCAT scores and 3.8+ GPAs. So, once the school is confident you can do well academically, the numbers become irrelevant. It's up to the individual reviewer who happens to be looking at your application and they mood they happen to be in the day they are looking at it.

Plenty of people have been rejected from BU and received interview invitations to other schools, myself included.

This process sucks, period. But it is unfortunately the only process to get from where we are now to where we want to be.

As I was told in the Army: you ain't gotta like it, you just gotta do it.

Rejected this morning. Has anyone tried emailing BU asking for their reasons of rejection? Do they give any post-rejection feedback?

Rejected this morning too. 1st of the season.

I guess the first rejection is the hardest.

When did you guys receive your 'complete' emails?

Me too! For those of you who have interviewed, how big is the interview group?

Rejected just now (first 🙁 stings a bit). Complete 9/6 average stats. Good luck to everyone still waiting.

Jeez milkphlegm, you're the interview queen. I'll take one or two off your hands if you have too many?!?

Haha, don't flatter me! Three so far and I'm so grateful - I'm sure yours are on their way soon!

Just submitted my application. Hoping for the best. Love Boston a lot.

Does anyone have the US news data on the percentage of interviewed students that are accepted to BU?

The MSAR says 864 OOS are interviewed, and 171 IS are interviewed. While 135 OOS matriculate vs. 31 for IS.

Thanks!
most recent USNWR stats:

Applied: 11,780
Interviewed: 1099
Accepted: 572
Enrolled: 181

Rejected last week. It was disappointing, but am glad they don't wait til next year to let you down. Good luck to all

Sorry to hear about all the rejections that went out this week. Does this mean we should be expecting another round of IIs from BU soon? Good luck to everyone else still in the running :luck:

No, not necessarily. BU sends out rejections on a daily basis.

BU is fast approaching mid-september complete applicants. ARGH!!!!

Good luck everyone! I hope BU shows us all some love!

Ya know what though? You gotta love that bu doesn't keep you waiting. I don't know how they get through everyone so quickly and still do the holistic approach (no stats screens here) but makes you wonder why so many other schools string you along. It can obviously be done quickly and well. Hats off to you, BU.

Hi everyone,

Sorry to hear about the rejections.

For those of you all who haven't heard anything, keep your chin up! I thought I was going to hear the bad news too, but I received an II this afternoon for the MD/PhD program.

Complete 8/19, OOS, 31, 4.0.

Did do the optional essay (growing up in KY as a homosexual).

Very ecstatic...thought I was going to get cut.

Good luck to everyone!
