2013-2014 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh, I'm aware; I was just wondering about the bulk. Based on past history, do you have any idea whether or not "early" interviewees (sep/oct) are *generally* notified earlier (i.e. Jan)? I know how the admissions process works (scoring/ranking system), but I was curious as to whether interview date had any sort of effect on notification unless you happened to be absolutely amazing or absolutely terrible. Thanks

Don't think so. Since there's a post-interview ranking system, I think your post-interview score will dictate when you hear back. Judging from other schools, it seems like this post-interview ranking system takes place almost immediately following your interview. So by January, they probably have a ginormous list compiled of all the scores of all the interviewees who have been ranked until the point, so in the end, interviewing in September vs November doesn't really matter. All that matters is that score.

I may be being a tad paranoid, but what do you all think is the probability of getting accepted with a later interview? I'm curious because I was complete for 5 months with nothing but silence. Would I be going to interview for nothing?

Dartmouth makes it known that your interview date has little to do with determining your acceptance. Since they use the post interview ranklist, it could even shorten the amount of waiting time between interview and acceptance/rejection if youre on either end of their spectrum

Oh sweet, thanks!

They try and give later interviewees a fair shot. They supposedly don't want an unfair playing field based on when you interview. This is my understanding from when I interviewed in October

EDIT: d'oh, missed Pdeluxe 's post

Sorry to hear. 🙁 Was not the secondary just what are you doing this year and is there anything else you want to tell us?

Yeah I recycled my pritzker essay which I thought was good at the time, but wasn't. All my early cycle essays blew. Almost all my later applications got me interviews.... oh well. I'd be happy at Minnesota. Same weather as Dartmouth but better beer.

From what I wrote and chatting with fellow applicants on my interview day, Dartmouth seems to like people who have some experience/aspirations that are related to healthcare policy. Given that the TDI is a big selling point for them, if you didn't express interest or inclinations for policy (i.e. changing state of healthcare, improving some aspect of the system, interests in admin stuff, etc.), your essays may very well have been the reason for not extending an II.

Just my musings.

Really? I didn't really express any interest in healthcare policy on my app............

Haha. Love it.

Has anyone been waitlisted/rejected post-interview yet?
Nope, still no news here. I don't think they do that until later?

Also I would like to add that I don't believe the "later interviews don't decrease your chances" thing. UCI claims that but if they do not seem to follow it

well I was just expressing the feeling I got from my experience. I could be (and probably am) completely off base haha

+1

I didn't mention healthcare policy in my essays but I did discuss it for the majority of one of my interviews. The school was involves in writing parts of ACA (However, the dean who was involved has since stepped down). My interviewer even said that Dartmouth is a great school for me because of my interest in policy.

for those who interviewed here, would you say the interview is relaxing and conversational? also, are there taxi/cabs to get around? kind of nervous that it's kind of located in the middle of nowhere...

My interviews were pretty much like every other interview at other schools (so yes)

yup they're really relaxed and they go by really quickly because they're only 30 minutes long. there are taxis

Anybody interviewing on Dec. 12??? Hoping to see some SDN friends there!

Also if anyone has any advice concerning the day itself please post or pm me 🙂

Just sent an update letter and hoping for the best!

After re-reading my secondary, I was surprised I didn't talk about health policies. I was too lazy back then and probably reused my old essays.

Interview invite today! I wa complete a soon as it was possible to be complete. I lived in nh for 22 years and I have moved and have residency elsewhere now. LizzyM score 68.
Congrat Vans42! When will you interview?

For those that received interviews recently, when were you complete?

I have to hand it to Geisel on one thing; out of all of the medical schools I have applied to (and believe me, there were many) they have probably been the most considerate in their communication. Their rejection letter was polite and gentle, and when I sent them an email asking if they might be able to offer room for improvement in my app for re-application next year, they said they would be happy to help me out later in the Spring. Kudos to you Geisel! Most other medical schools flat out denied me when I requested feedback.

For sure, they have been the friendliest of all the schools I've dealt with and they're my number 1 choice because they do such a good job treating people right

Agreed. The people there were so nice! I really wasn't expecting it, but everyone in the admissions office is really sweet.

Darthmouth sounds like a great place! *fingers crossed*

I was complete the earliest day possible in July and haven't heard a birds chirp from Dartmouth. I guess this means good news?
