2013-2014 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sooo it seemed to me that the people who I interviewed with had great experiences and I would agree, except for my second interviewer. He just nit picked my research and his attitude was really strange. He then critiqued how I got to Dartmouth hahaha. Otherwise it was a truly great day. Not sure whether that second interview crushed my chances but I guess I will see. Good luck to everyone!

Did anyone that stayed with the med student hosts have a hard time getting in touch with them? I've tried to ask two people for my Jan 30th interview and have gotten no response... any affordable lodging suggestions out there?

I stayed at the Days Inn. They provide breakfast and there's a free shuttle system in that area that's a short walk from the Days Inn that'll take you pretty much right up to the med school admissions office.

Than you! I'll have to look into booking that. It's too bad the student hosts seem to be unable to take me in! Flights were so expensive

I stayed at the Day's Inn as well. The breakfast choices are pretty limited and there isn't much around the area in terms of restaurants. I heard from other interviewees that the Hanover Inn was nice.

Yep, the Hanover Inn is nice, but that place is so expensive!

It was!! I'm starting to think my perception of the school was skewed because that hotel was bomb haha

Complete since late July but haven't heard anything yet. It's a bit of a reach school with my stats... but here's hoping!

anyone know when acceptances/post-interview results come out?

They've been trickling out since Oct 15th, but the admissions office said that the bulk of acceptances happen in January and later. When you hear back depends on your post-interview score and where that score falls compared to everyone else who has interviewed.

For those who have interviewed, when does the interview day end? Reason being that I want to try to catch a 7:45 PM flight out of Boston from the Dartmouth Coach.

Mine ended around 4. I think that's cutting it too close.

If you skip the tour of the undergrad campus, you can be done at 3:30 (at the latest). If you are lucky, your interviews could end by around 2:30 or so. You could possibly call the office and ask that your interviews are scheduled as early as possible so you can make your flight. The person who answers phones is really nice. 🙂

I didn't think to call the admissions office to ask for early interviews, but with the assumption that they were done at 3/3:30 I looked into every possible transport option and there was no way to get to Boston that night in time to catch an 8pm flight without a significant risk of missing it (which would mean a night in the airport if you're going to the west coast, like me...). The Dartmouth Coach often arrives in Boston a bit later than it says on the schedules because of traffic, etc. I ended up springing for a hotel the night after my interview and and I'll be traveling back to Boston the next day. I'd definitely give contacting admissions a shot though, they must know how difficult travel is for us non-drivers. Actually writing this from Amtrak now -- 8 hour train rides give you lots of time for SDN! 😉

You should look into flying out of Manchester instead of Boston, its closer and tends to have cheaper flights. It also may give you other options for flight times.

Thank you all for your input! On paper it seemed possible, but it sounds like I'll be slumming in the airport unless my In the Area email to BU works.

JB4488 - How long was your Coach ride? Does it drop you off near Dartmouth and Hanover Inn?

How much did you pay to stay at Days Inn? Does the Dartmouth Coach make a stop there?

I paid $100 for my room. Strangely, all the hotels in that area are so expensive. Might be because of all the tourists flocking in to see the campus lol.

Hmm the Dartmouth Coach doesn't stop there, except I think I saw a couple driving by the Days Inn lol. But that area has an interlocking transportation system (which is free). You could probably use it to get to the Days Inn from where the Dartmouth Coach drops you off (in front of Hanover Inn I think).

I've done Dartmouth Coach a few times, back when I had friends in school there, so I know the arrival times can be a little off. It picks up directly in front of the Hanover Inn.

On the schedule, it says that the bus leaving Hanover at 3 (and I figured it would be a stretch to make that one) gets to Boston at 6pm, which would make a flight doable as long as the bus doesn't get in late. The next bus, at 5pm, gets to Boston at 8. Too bad...if we had the same interview date I'd have been happy to let you crash in my room!

I'm staying at the Hanover Inn, and with the discount for being an interviewee at Dartmouth, I think it was just about $150. It's 3 blocks from the interview and the Dartmouth Coach picks up from there, so I figured it was worth the extra $50 I could have saved at a farther away hotel. Cabs are impossible to find and you never know if snow will be an issue.

Thanks, I'll probably book at Hanover Inn. Congrats on your interview invite to UCSD! Totally stalking the thread because I was wait-listed yesterday 🙁

Any MD/PhD applicants out there? Any news? I haven't heard back yet. Wondering if it's a silent rejection...

I interviewed 10/30-31 and haven't heard anything yet either.

I stayed at the Residence Inn and loved it. They have a free shuttle that picks you up from the lebanon airport, and also drove me to my interview and back. Complimentary breakfast and dinner if you stay during the week day. I think I paid 136 for the night

Interviewed Dec. 17. Hilarious director of admissions and financial aid presentation. Very friendly staff accommodating us all. Drive from Manchester Airport is about an hour and a half. If you have a rental car make sure it has good tires if it looks like it's going to snow on your interview day.

Hey guys, what is the name and contact info of the very nice lady who welcomes everyone on interview day? Having trouble locating her on the website and I'd like to send a thank you note to her as well. Joan something?

Joan Mannix I believe is her name.

Guys HELP. I'm from FL and have my interview in January. This might sound silly but is there certain {appropriate} attire to wear to an interview in that cold of weather? I've never had to dress that formally during winter time. Thanks for the help, I'm so excited for the interview! and just FYI I was complete in late July for Dartmouth (the first secondary I did) and only got my II a few weeks ago so there is still hope!

get a heavy coat, cap, gloves, warm socks. wear your regular suit + shoes. thats what id wear

It was a pleasure to receive an interview invitation on December 18th having been complete on September 17th.

Just a heads up for anyone considering writing a letter of interest pre-interview for Dartmouth. After asking them who I should address one too, I was told that they will take them but that they really don't factor into interview decisions (at this school). So, I decided not to bother.

I have to say, the hand-written card in the acceptance letter is pretty awesome!
