2013-2014 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Based on last years thread, the last interview was around mid march. So I think it'll be March 11 this year, if the guy above only had 3 dates left to choose from, the last one being March 11
Last year went to March 21st. I remember because a friend of mine interviewed that day and thanked her lucky stars that they invited her. I think she was accepted but she ended up matriculating somewhere else.

I thought Dartmouth was one of those schools that interview until April?
This is from their web site,
"3. Interview Notification
Applications are reviewed from September through April. You will be notified by email when a decision is reached regarding an interview. Invitations to interview are issued throughout the September-to-April interview season at the discretion of the Committee."

Plus it seems like everyone is backed up this year so I wouldn't be surprised if invites still were going out as late as late March. Obviously I'm hopeful, but there is a reason so many of us are left in purgatory (not interviewed, but also not yet rejected).

You go to the same school as me. I think Ive seen you before not to be creepy. lol

Hey guys!

Just got an II! Super excited.

Ps it was right after I sent an "in the area" email. They were very nice about trying to work with my schedule - which made me like this school even more!

They had 3 dates available, March 11th being the latest one.

For those of you who have already interviewed there, would you recommend me having a car during my visit? I am in BOS right now and am debating whether I should take the Dartmouth Coach or just get a rental and have more flexibility. Any thoughts?

I would say drive if you're close enough to drive to Dartmouth. Just the flexibility. I took the coach and was dependent on my friend for my rides and it wasn't the most relaxing.

Slash...

Is anyone waiting to hear back from their interviews in January? Mine was mid-Jan and I'm dying to know/get an acceptance letter...I keep checking my emails furiously.

Anyone know where they are at in terms of Committee Meetings right now?

fellow January interviewer here. Looking at last years posts it seams that January interviews were beginning to get responses back sometime around late Feb to mid March. At least I personally am hoping. Like yourself I have also been neurotically checking my phone since 2 weeks post interview.

+2... Interviewed 1/23. Anyone else here interview that day?

Still waiting for a post-interview decision since Mid-October. Unfortunately, with the ranked list system they use, I think it's too hard to predict when any one candidate will hear back from the committee.

Apparently Dartmouth is reviewing apps in random order this year... No wonder I'm still alive in the review process. So much for applying early here 😛

Reviewing interviewed applicants or just in general? It seems really counter-intuitive for me for them to go in not order...and also disappointing since I want to know ASAAAAAP

I'm still waiting for II... I called because I wanted to update but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss the rejection email after like 6 months and that what they told me.

I thought I had a shot since I'm still alive in the review process but I guess it's more so luck than merit.

I thought that they were fairly transparent about the whole process. They assign you a composite score and put everyone into a list. Then they work towards the middle, accepting from the top. Did I hear that incorrectly?

@Syndicate they're as "merit based" as every other school it seems like, which is not very much. But I wouldn't say they're less or more. After the interview it does seems to be a scoring system but then you don't know how they assign scores

Waitlisted today too. I had a feeling I would be... whatever. Good luck to all still waiting to hear back 🙂

This is a stretch, but is there anyone interviewing on Thursday, March 6th, who might want to split a hotel room (Hanover Inn or Six South St. Hotel) for Wednesday, March 5th? Hanover Inn is the Hanover (Dartmouth) stop for the Dartmouth Coach, and it's literally a 5 minute walk from campus -- or so I've heard. And Six South St. Hotel is 2 minutes from Hanover Inn. Thanks!

Recently got an II here this past week. Was complete back in early September. I guess they interview on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The first week of March was still available (earliest option) so I'm assuming there are still a decent amount of II's still to be sent out. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back. IMO the silence is a good thing!!

does anyone know how many applicants are at every interview day?

Called admissions today to ask if they've been sending out waitlists, acceptances, and rejections every day, even though I haven't heard of anyone getting rejected post-interview. So skeptical of the "no news is good news" thing 🙁

Are they done sending out interviews? I have heard anything since I was complete.

See my post above. They are definitely still sending out II's. They hadn't even filled up the first dates in March as of last week and I believe they interview until late March or early April, according to their website. You survived this long when they have been sending out rejections throughout the cycle. Who's to say that you're not next up for an II??

Thank you. Did you send any updates by any chance (or LOI)?

Hey hopeful. Dunno if neilpryde will respond, but I did NOT send an update to Dartmouth, and I was invited for an interview a couple weeks ago. Hope that helps (or at least eases some anxiety about whether you have to send one).

@hopefulxox - Yes to each - 1 generic update letter and then an LOI a few months later. Honestly, I don't know how big of a role those played (most claim LOI's pre-interview don't do much) but it doesn't look like it hurt either. If you're passionate about attending this place, I don't see any harm at this point.

What did they say? I interviewed back in September and haven't heard a peep!

This weekend marked 4 months post-interview and still haven't heard back yet. Cannot wait to just hear something!

5 months for me! Makes me feel like I'm the ultimate average applicant haha

Are they done with sending out interview invites? I sent in an update letter two weeks ago...

Rejected yesterday morning, as upsetting as it is. It is nice to not be in purgatory here anymore. Complete October.

I interviewed on 12/12 and silence since then. I know this has been a hot topic but man I would love to hear something from Dartmouth.

Can any current students comment on the wait list movement from recent years? I tried to surmise from previous year threads, but its hard to establish any kind of context. Thanks in advance!

Interviewed on the fateful day of October 24th. On that very fateful day, I fell in love. But, lo, this love story has been plagued with an awkward silence as I wait with angst and wonder, "Will my lover accept me?"

Haha but really though...

This is a big deal with serious repercussions. Thanks for sharing the link.
FYI this decision was recently reversed. The MD/PhD program will be continuing. The D hasn't reported it yet but the dean sent an email to all of the medical students. Apparently the PR backlash did the trick.

(Nonetheless, if you are applying MD/PhD I would call and get the full story from the proverbial horse's mouth)

Thanks for the update. Hopefully it's true. I'd be interested in seeing how many MD/PhD students matriculate here over other programs considering how flimsy this program now appears.
