2013-2014 Indiana University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
living in west lafayette now and having requested the lafayette IUSM campus, I can definitely testify to the fact that housing options quickly start to dwindle around january and february. undergrads start signing leases as early as october and november, so waiting until the end of april/early may is stressful. I'm exceedingly happy to have been accepted though, so I'll deal.

so are all the pronouns being subbed out with "me" so that we avoid generalizations like "all of us think this..." or something? it makes everything kind of entertaining to read, haha.

oh no, they've taken out all the "g"s at the end of words, so it looks like hillbilly speak too. very sneaky 🙂

yar be right on that! Also, in 2015 they be startin' wit a new integrated curriculum! The entire curriculum will be changed!

I wonder how this will affect our incoming class 😕 Hopefully all will be well 🙂

I am from Indiana. Flying to CA is usually about 2x as high from an airport like Fort Wayne or South Bend with frequent delays or cancellations and driving and parking to the Indy airport is expensive and time consuming. My point was just to illustrate that many people have a lot riding on the decisions (and my issue is a small one). I imagine some people with children or a spouse are really hoping that they don't have to relocate their families.

All that to say that the anxiety and neurotic posts on the FB page are completely understandable, and it is fueled by the fact that nobody can give a straight answer.

Gotchya. Just wanted to make sure you weren't out of state and didn't know about the other, less convenient, possibilities.

Its also frustrating to see an admissions rep say the new system is more fair then turn around and read about how an accepted OOS student was given 50% tuition and top choice preference (Indy). Doesn't seem fair to use campus placement as a bargaining chip.

woah...is that true? I thought the whole reason for OOS recruitment was for more $$$ from the tuition...lol.

On a related note, does anyone know if it's possible to get in state tuition in Indiana coming in as an OOS resident? Indiana has similar rules to Texas, but I recently found out that if you buy an apartment in TX that can qualify you for instate tuition. JW if Indiana has anything similar.

Is anybody here in a situation where they may not come to IU if they get a regional campus? I am dreading April 15th because I may have to confront these thoughts...

Come to Muncie!! 😛

I was told you need to either marry someone from Indiana or you have to show you are NOT here for school whatsoever. It is rough, I know...

Jeesh, yeah that is rough!

Does anyone know how long we get for winter break for first year's and how long for summer break? Also does anyone know when we will start this year? Is the first day Orientation (Aug 7)? Also will financial aid funds be released before Aug 1?

I don't understand why we're waiting for campus assignments just because some students haven't submitted their grad fees/campus prefs. That's up to them to complete and if they haven't done it then why does everyone else get punished... 😵

Where did you get this from? I doubt this is the case... traditionally those with regional campus preference received placement first week of April and the Indi lottery took place later in the month (~23ndishy?). Yes, things have changed this year as we are at the mercy of the Great and Powerful Computer Algorithm and it may change, but I'm sure we will all know at the least by the end of this month... but hopefully sooner!!

We are still getting people who haven't paid their Graduate Fee...this is causing a lot of issues. You can not fill out your campus assignment choices without completing this."

which I understood to be related to this (also posted by Allison):

"Hey Julie, we are trying to finalize a date but we also want as many people as possible to fill out the online form as possible so no date has been set."

Gotcha - yeah, I'm leaning towards what @msquaredb said... Also, I don't have facebook and it seems like a lot of people have been posting about the facebook page... is there good info that I'm missing out? Should I crawl out of my facebook hibernation?

For those of you who have visited the Bloomington campus: What did you like/dislike about it? Is it easy to navigate? Do they have good facilities? Do they have a pretty good reputation among the other campuses?

Got my acceptance last Thursday (3/20)! I interviewed 2/12. Since it seems everyone always wants stats....

Applied twice, Non-traditional, in state, 26 MCAT (10/6/10/R), 2.98 undergrad GPA (with an upward trend😵... yes I know) 3.73 graduate GPA, a variety of clinical experience and few months research. Don't let a sub-par MCAT/GPA hold you back! Never give up!!!

That's awesome, thanks for the uplifting post. What were your ECs like? Thanks for any info!

I took that last part to be independent from the fee issues. I think they just want to wait until after people from the April 15th notification date get a chance to submit their preferences. This leads me to believe we wont get a campus assignment until early May.

Similar conclusion, different reasoning. What good is SDN if there's no speculative discussion?

Also, I don't have facebook and it seems like a lot of people have been posting about the facebook page... is there good info that I'm missing out? Should I crawl out of my facebook hibernation?

I think the facebook page has been useful.. it's the one place we have access to open communication with admissions right now. Plus, don't you want to creep on your future classmates??

Now THIS I can do

Quick question about the campus preferences. When you guys submitted the campus preferences did you just arrange the campuses in order on the right hand side of the form and hit 'Save'? Or is there an additional step after that? Waiting for the campus assignments is making me go crazy and question everything I did lol

I'm 99% sure that's all we had to do. and I'm totally questioning everything too; I'm even too paranoid to just check my preferences page, haha. hopefully the campus assignments come soon before we all go completely insane!

I was afraid to check it too! I wonder how many people reordered things not knowing it would reset their submission date...

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

unless someone saw the post on the FB page that explicitly said it would change their submission date, there'd be no way of knowing. my guess is that plenty of people had no idea.

man this campus assignments is pretty overwhelming jeez. I did my preferences the next day when I got my acceptance letter and have not even looked ever since to avoid anything. It's crazy how it can kick you to end if you go in and even touch the darn preferences. But then again I am so skeptical about it. I have friends who have gotten into IU the last 3 consecutive years and apparently every year the way the campus placement gets done is differently.

I wish I could be less anxious about placements, but my placement decision isn't just affecting me. My boyfriend and I have lived together for the past 4 years, and he's in the process of applying for positions as a police officer. he's only heard back from departments in the lafayette area, so that's where I'm hoping to be placed. It's difficult to expect him to just up and move to an area in which he does not have a guaranteed job. My hope is that most people don't rank the lafayette campus very highly and that we do have a good chance of staying here.

Oh I agree, my wifes scoping out teaching jobs right now, but its hard when we don't know where we'll be. However, worrying about it isn't going to do any good - I'd argue that most of us entering med school are planners, but the uncertainty that I've experiences with IU is a good picture of whats to come. We'll all have Matches to plan, jobs to apply for, surprise emergencies with patients things that are frustrating because it would be SO MUCH EASIER if we could just know NOW. But you can only plan them so much! I'm not arguing that IUs got it all together, and it would definitely be nice to know ASAP where our campus will be. I guess I'm just a more trusting person - I believe IUSMs got the best in mind for me.

Well, its snowing in MN right now, so I'm out to XC ski for the weekend. Blessings, friends, I hope you can find some peace.

This is a much better way to think about it. Thanks for helping to put the situation in perspective.

Also, have fun in the snow! It might (hopefully?) be the last for the year!

Also, the placement anxieties don't end after this. I was recently speaking with a friend of mine (M2) at the Indy campus who was expressing his concern about placement for rotations. He said that he very well may have some rotations in Fort Wayne or Northwest which are two hours from Indy. He says that they find a place for you to live for a month but can you imagine how jarring and disjointed your life would feel? He was also concerned because he wants to do a competitive specialty and he wants that rotation in Indy so he can see more and be exposed to better faculty for networking/letter of recommendation reasons. I hadn't thought of those types of issues, but frankly it concerns me. Maybe a current student can lend their opinion here?

Due to its size, I would wager that IU might be the most complicated med school in the country.

I'm a current second year awaiting my 3rd year rotation schedule. This year they unveiled an entirely new system for choosing our placements. (They love to change/upgrade things!) Although they were supposed to give us our schedules at the end of last month, technical problems caused them to push our assignments to the end of this month. I completely understand where your friend is coming from but at least this year we have SOME say in as to where and what rotations we might be forced to do outside of Indy. Just hang in there. I literally went through all the worries and frustrations that you guys are dealing with.

So I interviewed on the last day of the cycle 2/12/2014. Should I just assume that I didn't get in? It's only been a a month since my interview but since people are saying that campus placements will be released tomorrow, I'm assuming that means I was rejected? Anybody have any insight, it's greatly appreciated. THANKS

I agree with everything you just said. I cannot stress how grateful I am to have been accepted, especially since it was as early as November. 5 months later though, and I still have no idea where the school is that I'm going?

This morning I got a phone call saying that someone has decided to sign on a home that my boyfriend and I had been really, really gunning for. I picked Lafayette as my first choice since I live here & my boyfriend's job is here, and I'm 99% sure I'll be placed here (especially with so many people choosing Indy). Losing this house was a huge blow knowing that we'll probably be staying here for the next few years. And now we're stuck in our 1 bedroom apartment for yet another year.

Okay, so now that I've thrown a proper pity party for myself... haha. I'm just going to keep reminding myself how awesome it is that I'll be in med school period, regardless of other circumstances.

I interviewed back in early September and still haven't heard back yet. Is it safe to say I'm out?

also: if for some reason I were to be accepted, I'd only want to go to IU if it was the Indy campus. Are all the spots pretty much taken at Indy now?

Notifications of acceptance are mailed the 15th of every month, so if you don't get a letter in a few days I would imagine your changes are lowered significantly.

As far as Indy is concerned, read the above comments. Nobody (regular applicants/accepted people) have been assigned a campus.
is this the last adcom meeting? (i mean april 15th).

I feel the same way, and I don't think that we should be made to feel guilty for wanting to know placement so badly. One of my biggest fears is that the system is not transparent because there are exceptions made. If the system is made transparent then we will notice the exceptions as we meet people who were granted them. We already know campus placement is a bargaining chip along with recruitment scholarships.

Mhm. I wasn't bothered by the campus placement thing at the beginning of the month because, whatever, it's the beginning of the month and they probably need some time to sort their **** out or whatever. But after multiple campus assignment-related comments on that FB thread and admissions' laughable responses I'm just frustrated now whenever I think about it. They don't know ANYTHING about how it works or when the date is? ANYTHING?? Did they steal the *algorithm* from the sorting hat in Harry Potter and now they're performing thorough analyses on each of our AMCAS applications to find tha perfect fit? Modern computers can't handle that magical code.

I hope we actually find out this month. If we don't... that's cold. And, if I dare use the word held over many pre-meds' heads when acting out of line, unprofessional. But that's just me jumping to conclusions. Hopefully all will be well and we'll find out towards the end of the month. Right now I'm assuming that they're waiting for the people accepted this round to throw some preferences into the portal. Plus, all they ever said was that we'd find out in April so they've been straightforward in that regard.

Damn, caffeine is a nice substance.

Probably as far as regular acceptance decisions are concerned.
I read somewhere from IUSM that March 15 was when the last batch of regular acceptances were mailed out. So anything at this point, I imagine the class will be full and anymore acceptances will be off their wait list.

I also interviewed at the beginning of September. I had a blast with my interviewer (we had a lot of stories and laughs shared) and to be given a chance at an interview at the start of the season, I felt that I had a solid chance at an acceptance. Unfortunately, that seemed to be the date they interviewed OOS applicants. Regardless, a school should know whether or not I would be a good fit and just let me and everyone else know about the status within a reasonable amount of time after an interview. Whenever I have called in to admissions, they only refer me back to the online system and that they have until June to decide. (Admission has the upper hand in this process.) There are so many things IUSM could fix with their admissions system, in addition to campus selection comments above. Nonetheless, I really feel like IUSM is the place for me and would do anything to go to the school. It's just a shame that a decision has to be dragged out for so long. This has been mentally and emotionally tolling on me, as I'm sure many other applicants feel who have not heard a reply since their interview. I don't see anything wrong with sending out a wait list or rejection, but at least I can move on and focus my energy on something more productive than trying to convince them to accept me.

Does anyone know if Bloomington and/or Muncie have recorded lectures? Thanks!

I think Indy's recorded lectures are available to students at all campuses, but I'm not sure if any campuses have their own specific lectures recorded. Hope that helps!

Does anyone know if Bloomington and/or Muncie have recorded lectures? Thanks!

Muncie does not have recorded lectures and the recorded lectures in Indy do not correlate with the lectures at the other campuses usually. For example, Muncie has neuroanatomy spring semester of the 1st year and Indy has the class fall semester of the 2nd year.

A side note- two years ago we received our campus placements on April 25th. I know the process has changed but it is a little insight that we also had to wait around for campuses. (What's worse is there was also a "second lottery" when I was an applicant and I didn't know my definite campus until right before June. I'm SO glad they got rid of that lottery.)

Throwaway bc I know IUSM admissions officers frequent this thread...

I think what should happen is that when you submit your preferences through the portal, it should automatically place you in your top-most ranked campus. First choice is South Bend? Is there a spot? Yes, congrats you are at SB. No? Go to next one down on list, etc. They DO NOT do this, however, which makes me suspect a few things...

1. It is VERY concerning that no one in the admissions office seems to know what is going on. Which probably means that isn't true. Which means that they DO know what is going on. Why won't they tell us? Because they know that if they told us, we'd call them out on questionable practices or the unfairness of the process. What would they have to hide otherwise?

2. The placement process, although it is claimed to be "transparent" and "fair", is not nearly as fair as they wish we'd believe. If it were fair, the entire campus wouldn't be forced to go all at once, but could pick like I explained above. My guess? They are waiting for recruited students to pick and confirm, before using the algorithm to place students.

2. Because I imagine that there is a large mass exodus of students who are assigned some of the lower-ranked campuses to other med schools, I think that IU is going to make us wait until after we are forced to commit on the 15th of May, thus locking students into whatever campus they are assigned.Which of course, eliminates the need for ANY algorithm, and they can place students wherever they choose. Parent is an alum? You might get a better choice. Accepted by the skin of your teeth? Maybe you're a poorer student who will be less likely to donate to IUSM? Probably less important that you get a campus with better resources.

Although this method will bolster their statistics for this year (think about it--they will be pulling less students off of waitlist), they are just setting themselves up for problems in the future. I don't know if I could chance getting stuck at one of my lower ranked campuses, if I were to apply next year, and I'd probably look more seriously at other places. And I'm sorry, but not all campuses are equal (I've lived near three of them already, and visited the rest). What's going to happen is that IU is going to see a smaller and smaller applicant pool, and thus a smaller matriculant pool with lower statistics. They are really screwing themselves over if they go this route.

What's really unfortunate for us students is that housing options are dwindling, and quickly. The Foundry, which is literally next door to the South Bend med school, is on a waitlist, as are most Indy apartments. Housing selection for pretty much all campuses has occurred, meaning that affordable options are gone unless you want to travel 30 minutes. And I refuse to live in a rat hole apartment, when I've been working three jobs this year and saving EVERYTHING to afford a nice place that's close to the medical schools. I've even placed a $500 non-refundable hold on an apartment with the hope that I might get off the waitlist at that complex. I'm about to place a $100 (fortunately a refundable fee) to be on a waitlist for an apartment at a second campus.

Please don't construe my comments above as criticisms of IUSM, just the admissions office. I love IU and I believe it's where I'm meant to be. But I hate being manipulated, and manipulated so obviously without regard for us. Remember folks, people who aren't doing anything wrong have nothing to hide.

I've been monitoring this thread and I feel for you guys. Myself and many of my friends are planning on applying and attending IUSM next year if accepted. Definitely will ask about this and consider ED for auto Indy placement. People start signing on apartments in October in Bloomington for the next year and by March you'll be paying 1.5 times as much for a comparable place. Feel like you guys have been hung out to dry 🙁

So is it absolutely positive that ED students get their first choice? I would be more than willing to commit if I can end up at my top campus.

(Of course assuming I can get in when I apply).

It looks like the the Indy "lottery" results for the last two application cycles were released towards the end of April (4/25 last year). I'm optimistic we'll hear campus results this week or next.
