2013-2014 Rosalind Franklin University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So how is 3rd year set up here? In the curriculum hand-out, they did post the required rotations...do you get a chance to add electives? When they say 9h vs 4h, does that mean 9 weeks vs 4 weeks? Do you have to find electives yourself or do they offer them and you can choose? During rotations, are you rotating with just RFU students or also RFU/Rush/UIC/etc students?

Also typically how many people show up to class (assuming not all 190)?

While I can't speak much about the 3rd year since I'm nowhere near there yet, I believe there is a bidding system in which you have points to put toward particular rotations at certain sites based on your interests. One thing I'm excited for is the fact that there are many potential rotation sites for us to experience, and so we get to see different hospitals throughout Chicagoland and see which systems we like best for our residency applications. I believe they give you electives to choose from, and I'm fairly certain if there are some not offered by the school that you wish to pursue, you can set them up to count as an "away" rotation.

As for class attendance, it really depends on the class and teacher. I personally rarely go to class. And when I do, it's because it's either a clinical skills lecture, case studies, or demonstrations (for instance last unit I went to quite a few lectures where they demo'd diagnosis using EKGs). Our classes are often with other programs, so there's typically a good amount of people in there (100+), but it's hard for me to say since I don't go very often haha. The nice part is, they record all the lectures and you can watch them at double speed, so I think a lot of people do that since it's a much more efficient use of time in this high volume environment.

Feel free to message me about anything at all if anyone has any questions!

Looking through last 2 threads for CMS I haven't seen any people who interviewed in December and no acceptances in January. Are December interviews a new thing or maybe just no SDN people had them?

Also a funny post I noted from the 2010-2011 year thread... if only CMS had paid more attention earlier!!!

"Do students at Rosalind Franklin get lockers? I forgot to ask on my tour.
I know it's silly but such things are important to me haha."

well.. i will confirm that rosalind franklin interviews in december. they also extend acceptances in december. 🙂

that being said, i will be withdrawing my app from here. though i love the school's focus on interprofessionalism and the fact that it has on-campus dorms, i cannot handle chicago weather and traffic. 🙁 good luck to everyone still waiting to interview here!

It's not actually in Chicago...like an hour North of it...

true. it's in "north chicago". but most students (around 90%, i was told) end up in chicago proper at some point or another during their third or fourth years to do their rotations.

i just had a very poor experience trying to get to o'hare after my interview. that was what made me realize that i am not cut out for chicago/chicago-esque weather and traffic. 🙂

Quick question;

Interviewed 11/22 and am OOS and have not heard anything back post-interview.
Anyone else from this date or a previous date who have not heard? I only ask since some people after this date were notified pretty quick.
Let me know, thank you!

Good luck to everyone by the way

Just wait it out! They'll get back to you at some point. Myriad things could lead to a delay in your application decision.

I'm in the same boat. There must have been a delay in my application. We'll be waiting for a decision till the end of January.

👍
I don't mind the traffic that much, coming from Cali, but the freeways did suck a lot.
C'mon, no cash at toll gates? What the f###?

wait... really? i was able to pay all my tolls in cash...

i guess if you're from LA it's not too bad, but it's a lot worse than bay area traffic.

Yeah, some of them you could only pay with the electronic device, so I had to pay it online afterwards.

Just withdrew my II from here..hope it goes to someone waiting.

Hey, everyone. I am an M3 at RFUMS and I just wanted to shed some light on some stuff for you. While I am not aware of any real link between our school and Lake Forest College (besides the awesome pizza place in Lake Forest) the alliance with Depaul has and will have even more tangible improvements. For one, there will be a brand new building opening on campus this fall with state-of-the-art classrooms, a new cafeteria, a new gym, etc. This is a direct result of the alliance. There will also be more research opportunities (though there are plenty already) as well as access to other Depaul resources.
As for our reputation/name, this is a common question/misconception. My recommendation would be to ask people in the medical field who know about us. We have a very good reputation, especially around chicago and california. We have world-famous researchers teaching us and alumni around the world who are leaders in their fields (and really helpful to current students, btw). So I urge you to see for yourself before you listen to any bad hype from uninformed people.

There are a couple of other students on here, so feel free to let us know if you guys have any questions/concerns we can help with.

Hi Eliezer,

Thank you for the detailed response to the new alliance with Depaul! I have a few questions for you if you don't mind. I am 25 and going back to school to finish my pre-med classes (BA in Bioscience) and Depaul accepted me into their Health and Science Program. I was THRILLED that they accepted me and also when I realized they were affiliated with RFU as that is where I want to study to be a Physician's Assistant. The tailored program is just what I've been looking for.

However, Roosevelt also accepted me with a scholarship (though small still significant) for every year I attend full-time with them. I am having a hard time deciding which school to go to. The money is needed but DePaul has this partnership with RFU - where I want to go. Do you have any advice you can provide for me? I am having such a hard time deciding what to school to go to and would love ANY insight. Thank you so much!!

Asha

Sure, I will PM you

If the money is significant, take it! This is a great question, but keep in mind that we're associated with Chicago medical school, which trains MDs. Feel free to PM if you would like to be put in touch with some PA students.

I'm flying into O'Hare on Tuesday for an interview on Wednesday, the 8th. If anyone wants to split cost on a cab, I'd love it! Please PM me!

Does anyone have any idea when there will be updates to the probation status? I understand that they submitted the report in mid-December.

Flight into Midway cancelled for tomorrow due to weather. No luck getting rerouted. Anyone know if CMS is receptive to rescheduling interviews or has anyone had success rescheduling their interview? Would really like the opportunity to visit this school! Stupid mother nature!!

Assuming Southwest. Can they route you to Milwaukee? If so, take Amtrak from the Milwaukee airport long term parking to Glenview and a taxi to RFU. Good luck.

aren't all flights to the midwest cancelled? Milwaukee is no warmer than North Chicago. Don't risk it; it's just way too cold out there. Better safe than sorry. Reschedule for a warmer day.

Call them tomorrow. School was closed Monday due to the weather and they know many flights were cancelled, so I'm guessing it's likely that they'll re-schedule your interview.

Yea they even emailed us today saying don't worry if you can't make it to school because of the weather. Also, if Milwaukee is any better of an option weather wise, re route to there. It's just about as close to our school as Ohare when you account for traffic. Best of luck!

Hey guys! If you haven't been reading the thread up until now, I just wanted to make sure that you now that if you are interviewing at our school, we have a student hosting program. Admissions will send a link regarding getting in touch with current students, but if you can't seem to figure it out and you have an interview scheduled, e-mail [email protected] and we'll try to find a host for you.

In addition, if you've already interviewed or just want to speak to a current student about the school (and you aren't interested in being hosted), we'd be happy to set you up with someone. Again, [email protected].

One more time: [email protected].

The same happened to me.! I was on standby for various flights in to the area for the day and the next morning (early flights), and all were delayed and/or cancelled eventually. Long story short, I wasn't able to attend the interview. I called the office as everything was going down, and they told me I would be able to reschedule. Just call, they were super understanding of the situation.

II today, but I have to withdraw due to finances. Good luck to everyone still in the running!

PS: In the email, they offered interview dates from Jan 22 to Feb 26.

To those who are receiving interviews now, can you let me know if something about contacting a current student is in your interview e-mail? We're coordinating student hosting through that link, and I just want to make sure that it got put in!

Yes there is a link to a google doc prefaced by this statement "If you would like to have a current student contact you before your interview date, please complete and submit the following form: link."

When were you complete?

Thank you for the information.

I have neither been small pooled nor rejected. I think I have a few good updates up my sleeve this weekend.

Interview invite on Thursday! Can any current students give any advice about things they like/don't like about the school/North Chicago? Thanks!

Does anyone know whether RFU offers scholarships to new incoming students? I know SUNY Buffalo offers some after students fill out a RWJF application, but I wasn't sure about RFU.

Some of them exist, but I'm not sure what the criteria are. They're pretty hush-hush about it.

In addition the Franklin Fellowship offers a $15,000 scholarship (one-time, non-renewable) to 12 students from RFUMS (not just CMS) for a service project.

It's a quiet location that makes it easy to study, and the faculty are extremely friendly and welcoming; I stop by offices without an appointment regularly, and not just to ask about schoolwork.

As far as what I don't like, our website is abysmal, and I hate studying. Studying is awful.
