Sorry- but does anyone know what they mean by list all of your "online classes"? I am an older student- finished undergrad and grad awhile ago. Do they mean actual "online" classes or do they just mean list ALL classes. Thanks everyone.

I think it's just actual "online" classes. Any class that you didn't attend the actual, physical classroom.

Hey - I thought this would be relevant to all those applying to UB. I am from the Buffalo area and the news printed yesterday that the University at Buffalo's Gen Surgery and Ped Surgery have been put on probabtion in additional to Derm, which has been on probation for quite some time.

Seriously disappointed in this school 🙁

Oh no what happened??

Oh well who cares. It's not as though the medical school is on probation with the LCME.

Anyone else still having trouble logging into the secondary? I received it this morning, and I still cannot log in.🙁

Just to clarify, I'm a current student who should be studying right now, admissions is rolling but review is random. Does that help? Dean/Dr. Severin is very honest and serious about saving enough spots right up until the last interview day. He won't hold an interview unless there are ample spots. I applied early, interviewed in the winter (maybe feb/march) and was accepted. I chose UB over several other schools, including every other SUNY as a choice and couldn't be happier with my choice. UB selects for a diverse class with a specific university culture in mind, and I think they do a great job. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer, but we have a test this week so it's likely I won't be able to answer right away.

This really doesn't have that much to do with the med school These are university affiliated private or community residency programs. Residency issues have little to do with the med school, it's an ACGME issue not a LCME issue.

Also, UB sponsors a ton of residencies, I think it's something like 7th in the state. It's not unusual for a school with a large number of community affiliated residencies to occasionally struggle to re-establish one or two. UB med school is very separate from the Residencies, and we rotate at multiple hospitals. They are going through a lot of changes with moving the campus downtown to help the residencies feel more connected to the larger UB organization, and to make the students feel more connected to the residency. The new building design looks awesome.

Residencies open and close all of the time, I wouldn't put much stock into it unless you were hoping to attend that specific residency upon graduation. If you look at the match lists, you'll see people do just fine getting into the specialties of their choice. That's more a function of the very supportive administration doing everything possible to help us succeed (especially Dr. Severin and Debbie Stamm)

II! But in the email they've scheduled it for next week. I'm OOS & can't get out there that quickly. Anyone have luck rescheduling?

You can reschedule but only once and interviews are only on Wednesdays.

Thanks! I just got the email and have to respond to them in 4 days (I don't even know of I'll get my snail mail packet by then). Might have to delay it a couple of weeks.

Would any kind SDNers be willing to offer interviewees like me housing? I have an interview coming up next Wednesday and just got a response about official student hosting saying they are still waiting for volunteers.

II!!!! OOS 3.81/36. Scheduled for next Wednesday (kind of short notice), but I'll take it!!

I believe that's generally true for all the people invited for interviews in that they are given an II email between Monday and Wednesday and scheduled for the following Wendesday. You are allowed to reschedule if you have a conflict, but only once. Oh and Congrats on getting the II!

Hi everyone!

I'm a M1 at UB =] Feel free to pm me if you have any questions about interviews/UB/ other application questions! I totally understand how you guys feel since I was in your shoes not long ago =]

II today! Very surprised (I'm OSS) but very excited! Very short notice, but I'll be traveling for the interview date they gave me. I applied very, very early, and my stat ranges are: MCAT 29-32 and GPA 3.75-3.95.

This whole random review thing is really throwing me. Submitted 7/1, still no news 🙁

How are the interviews done here? And what is in this packet they mail to you?

The packet just had some information on good hotels in the area- I don't remember much else in it- possibly some info on where to meet.

The day starts out with a tour (wear comfy shoes!), then there's about an hour of presentation from a dean and another physician on the school/ Q&A etc, after that you eat lunch and medical students stop by to talk and eat and people begin to be called for interviews. They bring everyone else down to the student lounge to wait to be called and meet more medical students. You have 2 interviews, you are assigned to a 3rd if they can't come to a decision. The interviewers are assigned to you the day of but its an open file interview.

Overall its a very low-key and nice day! You get a great feel for the school and for me it became very obvious how warm and collaborative the environment is at SUNY Buffalo. There is also a 10 minute writing sample but it wasn't bad!

Did they say this on interview day? I noticed that a couple of students had 3 interviews and I was wondering why. And does that mean a decision for whether the interviewers recommend you for admission to the admission committee or actually deciding if they will admit you?

I'm curious about this too!

RE: 3rd interview
The admissions staff mentioned about it during my interview day. We indeed needed to wait inside the student lounge right after our 2nd interviews for admissions to decide whether to give us a 3rd interview or not. but NO ONE had to go through it on my interview day.

I interviewed recently, too, and really enjoyed the visit. The tour at the beginning is long, closer to 2 hours, but we got to visit a bunch of things including the Anatomy Lab where we got to talk to students in the midst of it. It's not much walking but a lot of standing as you visit different parts and hear stories about the school.

The dean spoke to us after that about the school, then we had lunch with medical students, then the interviews began. The dean mentioned something about having 2 interviewers and that if they felt as if they didn't get to know you as well or if they had wildly differing opinions, you'd get a 3rd interview, but no one my day got that. Some interviews are by professors, some by students, some by the dean himself.

There can be a long wait between interviews, I think I waited about 2 hours, but we got to stay in the med student lounge and talk to med students and interviewees (I think a few of us played pool and ping pong with them while asking them questions, we had a pretty fun group, haha). I'll also mention that it was open file but I think they take out your MCAT score and GPA.

From their descriptions, it seems as if they make their decisions the same day, but AAMC doesn't allow them to release any news until October 15th, so I feel we'll get a lot of posts here starting 10/15. But the dean also mentioned that they only invite people to interview if there are actual spots open in the class, so there's no "interviewing for the waitlist." Anyone who's still waiting for an II, hang in there!

As for the packet, it was mainly just information on where to meet before the interview day and information on parking if you drove. If you're flying, there was also some information on hotels and promo code rates where UB interviewees get discounted rooms. My hotel had a shuttle from the airport <-> hotel as well as hotel <-> UB South campus.

Interviewed here a while ago. Unlike some other schools in the "mid lower tier" that have specific missions (primary care, underserved, etc), Buffalo seems to actively support any career trajectory you want, including ortho, derm, etc.

I just got an II here for next week!! I am so excited.

I am OOS and was hoping that once I got an II in NY, I could send out a few "in the area" emails and see what comes of it. But with this interview only 8 days away, I am wondering if this is too short notice for in the area emails?

Closest schools are Rochester and case. Just email them if you've applied already. Good luck!

I can confirm this, well except the mid lower tier part. I don't think US News and school quality correlate beyond the top 5 maybe 10. After those with huge name recognition, the choice of where to go is a highly personal one and should be based on school mission, location, learning style, atmosphere and probably most importantly: cost.
That said, UB doesn't have an only primary care mission, and that makes it compatible with people who want to specialize. Student have traditionally match well into competitive specialties.

Do you know what year the medical students that are part of the committee are? Are they year 2, year 3, year 4, or some combination? I imagine not year 1, right?

Secondly, how do they select for interviews? My application was completed maybe 2 weeks ago, should I be nervous?

Usually 2nd years. Not everyone gets a student though.

Selection:random review, interviews based on what they decide after reviewing your file. You are on the border of late for most schools, but due to the random review I think fine for UB.
