Thanks guys. Just got the financial aid package. This process is crazy. I've never taken out a loan, let alone go "loaning shopping." Never thought much about debt, but real life is hitting fast. I guess I'll be eating ramen noodles for the next 4 years haha

Have you guys heard anything about the housing weekend?

does anyone know if they send emails or they call for wait list acceptance?

anyone have any idea about wait list movement? it seems like alot of schools are either slow or haven't even begun accepting people off the wait list! this year seems quite unusual in comparison to previous years. what do you guys think?

Even last year it seemed slow to be honest. Usually it has to do with the applicant pool more than anything.

Just withdrew. It took a lot of willpower to press Send... I really did love UB when I visited.

How did you go about withdrawing? I need to do the same. It was such a tough decision to make!

Can any current UB students comment on housing? Is there anywhere to live that you can just wake up and be in class a few minutes later? Is there any common place that medical students live?

There's tons of apartments south of the campus that are not the best quality but cheap (350-450 or so a month). The crime isn't as bad as a lot of people say it is if you stay within a few blocks to the school. It's a 5 -10 minute walk from some of them, so not bad at all. If you're looking for nicer places, there are apartments near Daemen college close to south or you could live near the north campus. From my apt near north, it's about a 15 minute drive, but the neighborhood is great, no crime. I currently am leaving a 3 br. that I pay ~ 350 all utilities and internet total for. You or someone else can PM me if you want my landlords number. UV sweethome, colonial apartments, chestnut ridge and villas on the rensch are all places to look as well.

So comming to UB and want to know where to live...here are the best options:
1) If you want to enjoy buffalo's younger culture in a safe area downtown many students live around Elmwood. The are is full of young professionals, buffalo's hipsters, grad students, musicians, artists etc. There are bars, restaurants etc. The downside is you are 15-20 minutes from south campus but come 3rd year you are closer to the hospitals. Also when you shop for Elmwood you want to make sure you choose the right section the road is long but the village makes up a specific part. You really can't go wrong safety wise in that area but you might pay a bit more. A large portion of our class is here.
2. Delaware park/ north buffalo
There are 2 parts to this area, large expensive homes that don't rent and are extremely residential and an up and comming part full of students and young professionals near Hertel and Delaware park. Hertel has more and more to do every day, the metro nearby, closer to south campus while still being near the hospitals. It also gives you access to Delaware park which is awesome. This are should be shopped carefully as it is a transition area and there are pockets of great neighborhoods but also pockets of bad ones. I would say if you stay close to the park section of Hertel cross streets your pretty safe.
3. Near south campus
There is Amherst/Snyder area. More residential but right near the highway so you can get everywhere. Campus is 5-10 minutes from this and this will be cheaper than N. Buffalo and Elmwood. (Roommates I know split a 3 bedroom for 200 a piece).
4. Kenilworth
Nobody knows it exists, but it's a small pocket of neighborhoods directly north of south campus. There are tons of students and a few frat houses mixed in but as you go north it becomes quieter and more residential. Just avoid Kenmore and the block or 2 north, everything after that is good and really cheap...best part is its 5 mins or less to campus.
5 Chippewa
Buffalo's true downtown district. As a typical downtown bar club district safety is variable but we'll patrolled by police, but if you want the full downtown buffalo experience this is it. There are apartments being added every day with the school's move downtown and the new Catholic health system building. You can prob find your self a deal and it will be re ally convenient for the school bar nights.

Is there a Facebook group to find roommates? Sorry if it was asked before. I'm currently overseas and wifi is horrible here, so I couldn't check all the previous pages.

Checked Buffalo's threads from the previous two years and it seems like there was a noticeable amount of wait-list movement from April-May...why not this year? :arghh: Anyways, really hope it starts moving soon!

For nice new lofts (gated parking, stainless steel appliances, workout room, non-coin op washer/dryer, includes heat/AC) about a mile from campus check out Bethune Lofts - I live there currently. Lots of young professionals / grad students and some spoiled undergrads. Very low-key noise-wise.

Someone sent an email to the listserve regarding a Facebook group - it's called "UBMED2018"

A question to all past, current, and incoming UB students: What is the typical average cost of rent per month for students in the area? $300-400, $400-500, $500-600, $600-700, $700+??

I've looked at places and they range from $300-700...I don't know which is reasonable for the region. I know it depends on living alone versus roommates, but I'd like a ball park to look at, thanks!

I am splitting a 2 bdrm w my fiance and total rent is 1300 (so 650 each). This may seem like a lot, but there is a fitness room, includes heat (those old houses on Elmwood will cost 300 a month in heat during the winter), includes a private parking space, LED electric (our electric bill is only 30-40 a month). Make sure you take all those intangibles into consideration when calculating the "true cost" of a place.

Make sure you do some online research on the property management group the owns/manages the property - there are a couple shady ones.

Sorry if this has been asked before; after acceptance, how long does it take to get financial aid and loan info? It would be good to know before I try to get an apartment.

A week or two

I emailed Mr. Ryan about this, but I haven't received his reply yet, but anything else I need to submit besides completing FAFSA (as far as financial aid is concerned)?

Nope, that's it. They will notify you that your financial aid package is ready via UB email, so make sure you set that all up ASAP. You will then have to sign into HUB (the student info center) and accept your offered aid package. After that, you will have to complete loan entrance counseling. The maximum amount of government loans will not likely cover tuition + room and board (unless you receive scholarship); in this case, you can apply for the grad plus loan to fund the gap.

Optional: There is a scholarship available that has to be applied to within 45 days receipt of the "welcome package" (which you probably already got via your non-UB email).

Apologize if this has been asked earlier, but does anyone know the date and time of the white coat ceremony?

Just got accepted to a school much closer to my home on Long Island, so I will be withdrawing from Buffalo. Good luck to everyone waiting! Buffalo's fantastic, and if it wasn't so far away I would have definitely attended!

Congratulations!!

Did they outright accept as many seats as they have this year (as they had in years past), or did they overaccept?

I'm just curious and wanted to ask anyone out of state planning to attend the UB.

Are you all driving to NY? Is there a place to rent a car? What is your plan if you won't be driving your car to UB?

For the Buffalo secondary, how many characters do you have to answer the questions? Or are they all just yes/no. For example, is there room to talk about the research labs you have worked in for that specific question?

Dear UB Medical School Candidate,

This email is to update you regarding our Wait list.

We are experiencing daily movement down our Wait list. We expect this movement to continue until Monday, August 11th. We are also receiving phone calls and emails continuously from other US Medical Schools telling us that they are accepting current UB Med. acceptees. This action can lead to new openings in our Incoming Class, depending upon the candidate's final decision.

If you have been accepted to another medical school and do NOT wish to remain on our Wait list, please email me or phone call us at 716-829-3466. This action will help us in the long run, and will save us time and effort. If you care to remain on our Wait list, then no current action is necessary on your part.

We do realize that this time period is very nerve-racking and frustrating, but it is part of the process. We do appreciate your patience and understanding. Best regards.

It's a little over a mile away, I plan on biking, they have indoor bike parking. Crime-wise, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't walk from campus to here alone at night.

Just received acceptance call from Mr. Rosso!
Waitlist monster is starting to awaken from its sleep!:pirate::pirate:

better question- did rosso send an email saying they'd be starting phone calls

When i last spoke to Mr. Rosso, he said they would begin calling acceptances around July 1st. I feel that it is weird that person got a call because usually Mr. Rosson will send an email out asking for daytime phone numbers, etc or where you can be reached and no one I know has received an email asking for those numbers yet. Maybe this person got an email and just mistyped?

He did send an email regarding phone calls starting on July 1st. Check your email and spam folders. Let me know if you got it or not.
