2013-2014 Washington University in St. Louis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for your quick response! Well, I'll have to miss it then. But it seems like there are going to be plenty of opportunities to talk to WashU students during the interview day, so I guess it's OK.
Yeah, you'll see MS1s at breakfast and MS3s at lunch and MS4s for your tour. You'll also run into a lot as you walk around checking out their lectures and hang out waiting for your interviews. It's a small group of interviewees (I think 10) so you'll have a ton of opportunities to talk.

I don't know if this was just my interview day or something, but we didn't talk to MS3s at lunch, we talked to faculty members... Must vary by day or something.

I've seen some statements like "I really liked the faculty I had lunch with" on Interview Feedback, so it does seem to vary. Oh well, there will still be a breakfast and a tour with students.

Thank you for your replies guys, you've been very helpful!

Has anyone (besides one poster) heard back from this school yet? I interviewed at the beginning of October - they told us to expect a decision in November... so nervous/excited!

Last year it looks like the first acceptances were given out on November 16th....so maybe we will start hearing back next week!

Good news = II!!!, Bad news = Dec. 2nd: literally the most expensive time to fly anywhere b/c of thanksgiving AND it's the week before finals so i'll have hella tests/papers/studying to do AND I have and interview on the 5th in NY AND I live in WA. This application cycle just got really expensive really fast.

You can ask for a more convenient date, you know. I called the admissions office and had no problem whatsoever arranging an interview date that works best for me. WashU admissions office is one of the friendliest and most responsive I've encountered so far.
Congrats on your II!

When were you complete? Stats? congrats.

Complete 10/15, 3.8, 37. Thanks! I would ask for a different date but I already confirmed for 12/2 and I feel bad changing it because they specifically said in the interview email to not schedule and then try to change. I was given options for the week of 12/2-6 and I picked the 2nd right away because none of the other days worked for me and I was worried the 2nd would fill up if I waited... but then I looked at ticket prices after 🙁 Oh well, I guess if I interview sooner then at least I will hear back sooner.

My interview is in two weeks! I was notified 10/30 Quite excited. I finished the app 10/22 (3 letters of rec lost by my premed office delayed everything substantially)

Has anyone who goes/went to Wash U undergrad get an interview yet?

II just now! No available dates though 🙁
What was the first available date for you ChemEngMD?

I didn't call! You called and they said no available dates?

Call or email the admissions office. Apparently, the online scheduling system doesn't work.

II here today also via the website. Complete July. Still no email. Scheduled for early december.

No I didn't call, since it came at night. I meant no available dates on the calendar. Will call tomorrow though

I was in a similar situation. I called in and found a good bit of dates available that weren't listed on the calendar, so don't worry too much.

Thanks guys for the reassurances! Called today, a bunch of dates available starting in early Dec. Took the earliest (just before Thanksgiving).
Expensive plane tickets but so worth it!

Is it likely that those who interviewed mid-october might hear back this weekend? I'm getting really nervous! also is it true that they wait until jan to do waitlists/rejections?

I hope so! If not this weekend then I bet it will be next weekend. I'm nervous too, really hoping for good news! From what I've heard, they just release acceptances at first, so we won't find out about waitlists/rejections til later.

I have a question about the free night accommodations at Olin House residence hall for interviewees. Do the rooms have a private bathroom? Do they provide a hair dryer? Thanks.

They might have hair dryers at the front desk but I just packed my own. It's a dorm, so no private bathroom/shower but there is a sink in each room which was convenient for getting ready in the morning.

Merci.

12 hour countdown anyone? This will probably be my least productive day at work yet.

Probably- from what they said at the interview and from the last two years... though usually some people get phone calls before the actual posting.

In the past, pre-interview rejections went out in January. Post-interview waitlists and rejections went out in March. Only acceptances went out before then. That being said, as of this coming January 1st, there's a new Dean of Admissions so I can't say whether she'll change the policy or not.

I was told it was NEXT Friday, but I interviewed early Nov.
OH GOD. I interviewed around then too. Thought it would be a little longer until we could potentially hear back. No sleep until next Friday, great. Ha ha. Did you by chance ask if early nov interviewees would be reviewed in time for next week or did they just say in general the earliest acceptances would be next Friday? Thanks!

I asked when would be the earliest we hear back. Admissions officer said "Probably on or after Nov 22 for our group." Note that she said probably though, so I'm still checking tonight.

Yeah, my interview was early October, so they only told us 'mid-November.' Sorry everyone if I caused any undue anxiety!

Is there only one interview? The average number of interviewers is 1.3 on the feedback survey. hmm :eyebrow:

1.3 interviews sounds about right 🙂 Most applicants get a single 1 hour faculty interview, but some get 2 faculty interviews (I think 3 out of 10 people on my interview day had 2 interviews). On my interview day we were told that was done for quality control and were assured that people who had 2 interviews had no reason to freak out.

HOLY CRAP I JUST GOT AN INTERVIEW INVITE HERE!! 🙂

(Btw, I don't classify as a top/stellar applicant, so that's why I'm in shock now)

Apparently, WashU has a more holistic selection process than it's often assumed 😉

Congrats. When were you complete?

It is not too difficult to get an interview at WashU. They only receive 3,000-4,000 apps and interview over 1,000 and then accept applicants with high stats.

I'm so happy for you, elmo. It shows that this isn't a completely hopeless, ridiculous process.

Wow. I'm surprised at your need to rain on someone's parade. For your information, that mere 3,000-4,000 pool of applicants represents the finest applicants that exist in any given year. That's because most people think it's a waste of time for them even to apply. It's a self-selecting group. So to be among the select group of people who receive an interview from WashU is seriously impressive.

And to assert that they merely cherry-pick high stats among their interviewees is patently incorrect. If you get an interview--at any school--then you are clearly competitive in their eyes and they want to learn more. If they just discarded lower scores among their interviewees, there's no reason to interview them in the first place.

Seriously, if only it was that easy. People who get interviews/acceptances at WashU and similar schools have the stats and the awesome ECs. And in some cases, stats seem to be overlooked in the case of extraordinary ECs.
