2014-2015 Dartmouth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you're bored again, you should discuss some trends, i.e. most interviews after X date = higher % waitlists.

I'm getting all stats nerdy.
Was waiting until I had access to stata at work today 🙂 but I imagine the sample size is too small for any meaningful subgroup analysis. I'll try though!

EDIT: Too small for really any analysis, I tried :/

Dorks unite! I suck at stata though so play with sigma plot. Trying to learn R and Stata, but it's slowww going.

I have attempted to learn R like a hundred times but I don't friggin get it!

Even by hearsay, I don't know anything about the effectiveness of updates or about how welcome they are. Maybe @MalinaRana could offer some advice?
I've heard updates are welcome as long as they do two things. 1) Add valuable information about yourself- new experiences, an updated & improved GPA, etc. and 2) Emphasize how much Geisel is the place for you and how much you love the unique opportunities offered at Geisel (without being too much of a brown nose, I guess).

Interview invite tonight! Does anyone happen to know what days of the week Geisel interviews?
I believe Tue/Thu. But did not you get dates offered in the interview invite?

For those of you who have interviewed, how did you get from the airport to the campus? Did you take a bus, taxi, rent a car? Also, which airport would you recommend to fly into? Thanks so much for the help!

Flew into Boston Logan and took the Dartmouth Coach to campus. It picks up at each terminal. That's the cheapest option you'll find, I believe.

I plan to fly into Manchester (MHT) on Delta. I was considering BOS, but I'll be coming from work, so I didn't want to add another long drive on to a long commute.

I flew to Manchester and rented a car. Short drive and nice to have for exploring! The airport was small and really no traffic to worry about.

Hi! If you can, would you please share when you were complete? Thank you!

I was complete on October 24th.

Also, if anyone is heading up from NYC on Wednesday (tomorrow, 7 Jan) for Thursday's interview, I will be driving up to Hanover. Please PM me if you are interested.

Thank you so much for all your help! I think I will be flying into Logan and taking a bus from there.

Also would anyone like to share their interview day experience? Were the interviewers more interested in you and your experiences or did they also like to learn about your ethics and understanding about current issues? Thanks again for the help!

My interviewers were focused on my experiences and goals for the future etc. It was pretty conversational

My interviewers were definitely focused on me and my experiences rather than ethical situations or current events. Most of the time was spent talking about aspects of my application (various activities). I really enjoyed both of the interviews!

I emailed an update letter today and got an automatic response about the biochemistry requirement-which is totally unrelated to the info in my email. Has anyone else experienced this?

Congratulations to all those who FINALLY got called to the interview!! My theory: the admissions folks want to allow you the experience of the balmy weather Hanover enjoys this time of year, sort of as an additional selling point!! Pack those thermals, friends!

I'll be joining the party on that last January Tuesday, and you can bet that I'm already planning the layers of clothing!

Does anyone know how soon after the interview do the adcoms meet and make their decision? Is it once a week?

Hahaha, I don't have a CLUE what to expect coming from sunny California! Do they make thermal....nylons?? Congrats all!

@chachi19, to prepare: 1) Strip down to birthday suit 2) Shrink down to frozen pea size (must be instructions somewhere on the Internet!) 3) Have someone you trust enclose you in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator for three hours or so 4) Have the trusted person pry you out and thaw you in a room temperature sinkful of water for at least 30 minutes 5) Return to your normal size. I believe that this exercise may be helpful, although it is, of course, not as severe as what you will actually experience!

I think their committee meetings are every other week.

You'll hear soon (~4 weeks) if you are at the top of the rankings in the meeting that you're discussed. If you aren't in the top tier of the rankings, you'll probably hear something prior to April 30th.

This explains their process a bit better: http://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/faculty/pdf/admissions_committee_charge.pdf

That being said, it doesn't make waiting any easier

thanks for sharing that!

I knew about the ranking system... but the 3 tier system was news to me...

What wasn't clear was what determines the status of applicants who are waitlisted and rejected... does that come from the "Tier 3" group? And perhaps Tier 2 people will be in limbo until later in the cycle? These are super speculative questions and I don't expect anyone here to be able to answer them! Just trying to wrap my head around Dartmouth's idiosyncratic process...

EDIT: I have no ideal how I added that lil emoji as an attachment and can't seem to delete it, woops!

You're welcome I think the only answer we'll get in the meantime is "no news is good news". Hopefully we'll be hearing some good news soon!!

So have any interviewees from mid to late November heard back about a decision? They told us we'd probably hear after the New Year... but January seems to be slipping away.

I interviewed on 11/4 and heard back but they told us that some people could hear in 2-4 weeks but most people won't hear anything until the end of the whole cycle as they like to hold most decisions to the very end.

@BengaliBrat you are hilarious 🙂 I was actually just reading an article earlier today about the benefits of taking cold showers... hmmm, might not be a bad idea to begin training!

II last week. Complete end of August.

SOOOO NERVOUS/SCARED.
Congratulations, @katefromlost and @kewlboy88 ! The nervousness and fright (which are my specialties!) do get the adrenaline flooding the system, which (my prof parents insist) can work to energize the performance, so. . .don't let them see you sweat! (With the wind chill effect, the temperature in Hanover today is -8, which should effectively preclude much perspiration! Also, since Dartmouth is "green" not only in its emblematic collegiate color and team names but also in its philosophy, the indoor climate is generally on the far-from-stuffy side as well.)

Rock it, both of you!

has anyone who was complete at the end of september/early october been rejected?

For those who have interviewed, are both interviews with facility or is there a possibility of a student one?

Mine were one faculty and one MS2. I don't know how interviewers are assigned but I think some people had only faculty interviewers.
