2014-2015 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
2 november interviews in a row? And the few before more recent? Working their way back?

And congrats to above.

For those who may be accepted in the near future, would any of you mind doing us the favor of finding out what's going on with this acceptance process somehow when/if you get the call?

Thanks.

We have seen all spectrum of interview dates for accepted applicants on here. so that theory is not really true 🙂

I'd like to guess by now that its either 1). alphabetical or 2). by the "score" they give to our apps? I have not look back to the post when people reported their acceptances on Mon/Tues so please refute the above possibilities at will.

It's definitely going by the score.

That's how their decision system works.

This is the website they use, it should shed some light on to the matter (even shows Duke app page and Admissions quotes):

http://www.applywithease.com/

EDIT: Click on those slideshow arrows to read through it (you'll also come up on a picture of our Duke Supp App page)

Then it makes more sense how a few more has been trickling down these past few days, maybe they are comparing candidates for the last few spots before wait-list cutoff. Good luck everyone.

This makes a whole lot of sense. Thanks so much!

"Screening: Applications are screened by one or more reviewers and scored on a customizable scale. Applications with acceptable average scores move on to the next stage; applications below the set standard are sent a polite letter declining admittance."

I think that screening thing has more to do with getting the interview invite, it seems more appropriate for that.

The "Notification List," "Notification," and "Executive Committee" portions seem more relevant to us, I think.

Woops I meant to quote all of it, not just that one part. But point being it's by score most likely. Makes more sense than doing it by interview date, last name, location or whatever else we thought it was. Gives me some reassurance that there is some order to this - start with the highest scorers first, then deal with the rest of us later 😉

There does seem to be order afterall.

And, if you read the tabs, it mentions that each one of us has a "presenter" that presents us to the Exec Committee.

I believe it's that same "presenter" who may call people, if the person they're presenting is accepted.

Edit: I'm assuming the presenter tries to "sell" us to the Exec Committee

Makes sense, I don't have quite a few boxes checked in my app and think I bombed the interview so makes perfect sense.

Hmmm
  1. Screening: Applications are screened by one or more reviewers and scored on a customizable scale. Applications with acceptable average scores move on to the next stage; applications below the set standard are sent a polite letter declining admittance.
  2. Scheduling and Conducting Interviews: Applicants can use EASE to schedule optimal times for in-person interviews and choose desired meals. After interviews are conducted, interviewers score those applicants on a customized scale using our Digital MMI form. (Learn more aboutDigital MMI.) Applicants that score above a set threshold progress to the next step; applicants who score below are declined.
  3. Executive Committee: Remaining applicants are put in a pool and distributed among the members of an executive committee. Each committee member reviews the complete application and fills out a template summarizing the data including an overall score. Applicants above a threshold score are reviewed before the committee meeting by their presenter. All committee members are responsible for scoring all applicants based on template and presentation.
I remember earlier ppl were saying that a poor MMI could keep you from going on to committee... this seems to support that? 🙁

Three rejections this week and a MASSIVE fight with my girlfriend, but today is the day! Today is the day Duke come through and ends the waiting! Huzzah!

Disclaimer: this post inspired by delusional optimism, not real facts

Got the call on Tuesday! I know I'm late to the party. Interviewed early, last name toward the beginning of the alphabet. Congrats to everyone accepted, and good luck to everyone waiting!

For those wondering, no, I still haven't gotten an e-mail or a portal update, but my caller (who must've been the one to present me, since I didn't remember them from interviews), said e-mails should be out "In a couple of days." A part of me is still hesitant to believe until I see anything in writing. Hoping it wasn't a mistake!

Hey guys! Made an account just today because I couldn't take it anymore lol..... I find some consolation in the fact that we're all going through this together.....!
Does anyone know if there's been any PCLT acceptances?

Haha I feel you. It's not ideal but honestly sdn is all I have. Most of my friends are in business....nobody understands the struggle.

Does anyone know the criteria by which they score applicants? Or is that a secret?

So... more acceptances go out today, but I would be suprised if they do any over the weekend. Who knows though?

I bet WL and Rejects will go out after the 1st.

It is good to have a support group like there is on this thread!

She just said decisions rather than acceptances. Almost hoping WL and rejects go out today cause god knows I don't want to wait another week for the inevitable haha

I missed a call from an 866 number while in the shower this morning. Experienced a fleeting thrill of hope when I first saw it on my phone history.

Pretty sure it was just a telemarketer.

:smack:

My biggest thrill / letdown yet, though, was Tuesday evening, after watching this thread explode all day. I had a call come in that my caller id identified as "Unknown in South Carolina." I jumped up and answered, fully expecting it to be Duke. It was a business associate calling about business.

After I hung up and my heart rate slowed a little, I realized that this call was from the wrong Carolina anyway. Gah.

I called the admissions office. TODAY they are sending out hard copies.

I think she also said they were calling people today. So fingers crossed ladies and gentlemen.

Gosh they are so nice... Makes me want to go to Duke even more.

Didn't they also claim they mailed out decisions one day earlier this week? Sorry Duke, but I just can't really believe anything you're saying at this point....

I'm sure we talked to the same person so I'm really confused why the information keeps changing! Good lord.

How hard is it to just send a massive email?? Jeez, Duke, you have this master website that stores MMI ratings and creates a rank list and you can't just send an email blast to the first ~150 ranked students? what!?

You just became my new hero of this thread...beat out some stiff competition as well.

Duke's master MMI ranking system revealed:

Now what the animals mean, I'm still not quite sure...

Here's my bet as to why it keeps changing. Calls started going out on Monday night, so that's probably when they had the final admissions meeting to make the rank list. At that meeting, adcoms were told that letters and e-mails would go out "In a few/couple of days," possibly meaning Thursday. Interpretation can vary, so some of the adcoms may have thought that letters were going out on Wednesday, others at the end of the week. They told us each what they thought would happen when we asked them, but answers varied depending on who we talked to. The snow in Durham meant the office was closed yesterday, so letters couldn't go out until today, hence the change in information.

That's all just a guess, though.

Called the Office just now, the woman on the phone said not every accepted student will receive a phone call, but they are mailing out hard copy acceptance letters TODAY...So there is still hope!
Those acceptance/waitlist/rejection letters better be sent via FedEx, overnight, first AM delivery. I can't wait another week

Or sent internationally... I'm headed out of the country tomorrow! Hmmm....

Edit: I gave in and called and they're being mailed at 5p today.

Thank you guys for calling! Although with all this new info I don't know what to believe anymore.

@GoBlueDevils @2018Duke - any idea why they're MAILING letters this year? Doesn't seem like it happened last year and I don't know why they wouldn't just send e-mails :/

Edit: Also, was there ever a portal change last year after you were admitted?

Thanks!
