2014-2015 Duke University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Called the Office just now, the woman on the phone said not every accepted student will receive a phone call, but they are mailing out hard copy acceptance letters TODAY...So there is still hope!
What is that supposed to mean anyway? To be one of the acceptees that only gets an email? Do some not deserve the personal touch of a phone call? I mean we know a large portion of the accepted pool has gotten them...

@GoBlueDevils @2018Duke - any idea why they're MAILING letters this year? Doesn't seem like it happened last year and I don't know why they wouldn't just send e-mails :/

Edit: Also, was there ever a portal change last year after you were admitted?

Thanks!
I mean most schools send out letters in addition to emails etc. every year. It's the official word for decisions.

Oh I know that, but why mail the letters without sending the emails? Most schools who do that explicitly state that during interview days so I guess it's a surprise to me!

My only explanation to that is they know that snail mail will take a few days to get to people so that they send the letters out a few days in advance knowing that they still have a day or two to send emails.

That's what I am saying. How do you distinguish people who get calls and who don't?

Hey guys! Made an account just today because I couldn't take it anymore lol..... I find some consolation in the fact that we're all going through this together.....!
Does anyone know if there's been any PCLT acceptances?
Nope.. Waiting.. phone/email/postal mail ..... by early next week..

My newest hypothesis: They said not everyone gets a phone call because they are officially accepting people through mail, but they told the committee members who advocated for the applicants that they had the option to call and notify those who were accepted if they wanted. So anyone with a lazy/busy adcom advocate isn't getting a call.

Perhaps they will release additional acceptances via e-mail tomorrow? Last year they released them on a Saturday...and the last day of the month seems like a nice date to aim to have things wrapped up...

Whether I'm accepted or not, I just want to put an end to the anxiety.

"For the medicine," Seizurecrow shouted.

"For the medicine," Duke repeated.

"And I get to practice the medicine."

"An’ you get to practice the medicine"

Seizurecrow giggled with happiness. "An’ study on the fatta the schoo’."

"Yes."

Seizurecrow turned his head.

Duke raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the mussel of it close to the back of Seizurecrow’s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Seizurecrow jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering.

So no news so far today?

Last year, Saturday was the mass (or I guess you can say scarce) acceptance email day.

A few people did hear via phone calls before Saturday but I believe all people initially accepted received their email on Saturday last year.

It does kind of match up with someone posting earlier saying that Admissions said decisions would be emailed/made known by March 1st (Sunday).

Also, I doubt that rejections/waitlists emails will also go out on the same day as acceptance emails.

I think those will go out after acceptance emails, but I doubt it being Sunday (cause it's Sunday) and instead it being the following Monday....just like last year.

Sounds like it. I wish that I hadn't check here on Monday... If I had kept with my initial bet that news would come out Friday I would have been worrying way less.

Current student here: No idea why acceptances are being communicated so crazily this week, but it may have something to do with the university being on and off delayed or canceled or crazy 3/5 days this week due to snow and ice (can anyone say six day weekend?!). We're trying to call as many as possible, but you'll know soon!! Keep an eye on your mailbox. There shouldn't be any real reasoning behind things being crazy right now besides university closings & power outages.

EDIT: Historically, Duke undergrads & alums that are admitted do tend to get phone calls and earlier notice, but admissions is attempting to call outside that smaller group this year. Also, scholarship recipients or MSTP acceptances tend to be called as well.

so this means not every accepted student will receive a phone call?

Correct. I and many of my classmates didn't get phone calls when we got in, if that makes anyone feel a little better haha.

EDIT (again... sorry it's late): Predicting questions, I also got in first round of acceptances, not waitlist, and still did not get a phone call.

Thanks...This means no news is still good news at least for now

Is there any indication that those who didn't get phone calls will receive their decisions by postal mail only vs email and/or postal mail? The mailing method this year is confusing - I don't really get why that's the only information admissions is offering regarding decisions ?

Thanks for the insight! Much appreciated.

Edited for typos: I went to happy hour 😉

I can't really comment on mail vs email - no idea there. Last year it was an email, but they came out over hours throughout the day because though the message was the same, the admissions officer who sent them would change the subject line and first line of the email to match your name (for those of you lucky enough to have met him on your interview day, this was indeed rDuBz). They came out March 7 (same day as Duke v UNC home game, Duke won, yay!) so at least yours are supposed to come a week earlier this year haha.

Congrats dude!

I was having a terrible day.

I have a wicked fever and I can barely talk. I ran out of food and I wanted Ibuprofen, so I forced myself to trek out to the store, shivering the whole way. My phone rang as I was driving back, and I felt the same bitterness I do every time it rings now as a result of so many telemarketers and misdials during the Duke acceptance call days.

An unfamiliar number...

...but from North Carolina.

My voice would have been shaking, had I been able to talk properly. However, it currently sounds like I'm chewing gravel, and I think I might have just coughed into the receiver rather than saying hello.

Accepted to Duke!!!!!

I'm mostly amazed I didn't get into an accident.

Congrats to you all.

This slightly makes it harder to believe that not everyone is going to get a phone call, cause that's *only* what seems to be happening thus far.

Any clarifications on this @GTHC31 ?

Is this the expected last day for call or emails? Might it spillover into tomorrow or Monday?

Ok, so I don't know if this will drive the speculations or clarify things, but I combed through all the pages since Monday (yes, this is probably the only school-specific thread with 10+ pages just for acceptances haha), and so far we have 28 confirmed acceptances by phone call.

Yeah, it looks like everyone who's gonna be accepted in the first wave will get a phone call

I know there was a theory floating around that maybe only 10 to 20 percent of applicants use SDN, that may be true in previous years, but I'd be surprised if that number does not increase to around 50% for situations like this, and because applicants are using sdn more and more. So maybe they called a third(28*2=56/150 or so acceptances) of their acceptances by this point.

So people that haven't heard anything please have hope!!! I know it's not great math I did above...or even really math...I have a good feeling a lot more people will be receiving good news whenever they send out those emails!

There is a higher participation on this thread than previous years. Also at least half of the phone call acceptances on here are by applicants who don't post on here frequently. There is still hope....
