2014-2015 Indiana University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes there are instructions on the portal page on how to set up and verify your IU account and they have an assigned ID # for you.

Thanks! I didn't see that my portal was updated until earlier today.

Were you able to sign into the Applicant Portal with your IU Network Credentials right away? My Cyrus account hasn't been created though.

Has anyone from across the country gotten an acceptance in the mail yet?

Some one who answered above was oos

I haven't gotten my letter yet, I'm on the East Coast! I found out my acceptance through a portal update/ email from admissions about campus selection.

Thanks! I didn't see that my portal was updated until earlier today.

Nope I wasn't able to right away and still am not able to but, I already went through the process of creating/verifying my account. It did say (when i signed into the portal using my amcas info) that it may take up to 5 business days for the credential process to be complete.

Is there anyone that applied early decision and received acceptance?

Hey guys! MS1 here....I was on this thread last year and got accepted around this time. Just wanted to say keep your heads up, its never too late even if your interview is not till next month. One of my friends interviewed with me in November and got accepted in June and the other one interviewed in February and got accepted in July so even though timing might not be ideal, it is worth it in the end! Good luck!

Hello fellow classmates and hopefully soon to be classmates, I happy to say that I got into IUSM early this December and I’m excited to start next fall. I would like to ask question and please excuse me if it was already ask before as I didn’t gives this thread a good look through before this post, since there are 18 pages. I was wondering if anyone knew when was the earliest we would be hearing from admission of our campus assignment?

Me too! I wonder if its even worth going though, I live 10 hrs away and I'm not sure how many spots are still available and if its too late in the cycle...can anyone offer some advice?

Go to your interview! They've only accepted just over half the class so far!

Interviewed 11/5. Anyone interview around that time and hear back yet?

How exactly does campus selection work? Do people accepted earlier get higher preference? Also, do people who live very close to the Indy campus get any kind of priority?

You log into your portal and rank all the campuses... The top one being the one you really want to go to

People who are accepted earlier do not get a higher preference only Early Decision ppl are promised their top choice

People living in or close to indy get the same priority as everyone else. When campuses begin to fill up then they look at location to make the last decisions

Hi all!
My interview in on 02/11. Does anyone know if there is a student lodging program for interviewees? I am on a TIGHT budget so I am trying to save money any way I can! I know other schools have such programs...

IU doesn't offer that

One of my classmates applied to rural health... She said in about 2.5 weeks so it seems like February 15 for you guys as well

EDIT: This could be for a specific campus--I was interviewing at Indianapolis. Hope it works for you!
They do have limited lodging available. I have copied the relevant information from their email below:

If you would like to be matched with a student host, please send an e-mail to [email protected], the subject should read: Lodging Request for (interview date).

Please include your name, gender, pet allergies, gender preference of host, phone number, e-mail, and the date you will be interviewing, as well as any other information you think will be helpful. We have limited housing availability and will be restricted to hosting approximately 25 students; therefore, students will be matched on a first come first serve basis. If we are able to accommodate you, we will send you an e-mail a few weeks prior to your interview date with your host's contact information.

Um actually I think it depends on the campus. I would reach out to the person who emailed you and see if there are any opportunities. In some places there are current medical students who will be willing to host you. I know I heard of that happening a couple of times in Indy and Terre Haute.

Edit: I only just saw the post above with the direct email address. I am sure that might work better. Anyways good luck!

Interviewed for the Rural program in early January and I definitely remember Dr. Duong making the comment that us interviewees had a good chance to hear something after the February committee meeting.

I also interviewed for rural in January and he did say that. I got the impression that the rural program is just now getting through their interview days so they are at the point where they are going to start deciding more. I didn't even know there was a rural interview day as early as November until I got on SDN. Good luck to you both!

Hello everyone!
Pardon me if this has been asked already, but is there a place where we can keep our luggage on interview day? My flight is right after my interview. Thanks guys!

Yep, right where you check in!

Any current students happy at this school and have some free time? I'm in state and have an interview soon....but when I talk to all my friends that are in med school now...I feel like everyone at IU hates their life and everyone at other schools is much happier and have a lot of free time? I'm looking for some assurance that their are IU med students who are enjoying their time in med school.

I kinda got this feel too...like students at IU when I visited weren't as happy and when I asked if they liked their school, they mostly replied that they thought it was "ok". It was different student vibe then the other schools I've been to. Not saying this to deter anyone from going here or giving up their spot (I've already been accepted), but it's definitely something that I noticed.

I'm sure it heavily depends on the campus too.

Maybe the students were just stressed out, they have a lot going on. I've spoken to people who've had family members and friends go to IU and they said they loved it.

Hi everyone!

Does anyone have suggestions on a hotel? I want to save money but that would mean being further away from the interview location. How is the traffic there? Is it worth getting a more expensive hotel downtown closer to campus or is something by the airport not really an issue. I live in Phoenix and traffic in the mornings here are horrid. It takes forever to get downtown when you're on the outskirts of town. I just don't want to in a taxi if it's a long wait in traffic. Thanks!!

I have met several happy students at the South Bend campus. The Indy campus people that I met aren't crazy about the school, but so many of them never attend class and don't really get involved with other medical school activities. I am curious about this as well. It won't stop me from applying, but I will be sure to visit multiple campuses.

True, but I've been on interviews at schools where it was their finals week and the students weren't acting like that. But everyone has a different experience, and like another poster said, maybe it is campus dependent. I don't know...I kept in contact with a few of the students I met and they all kinda told me the same thing even after my interview day. Obviously I shouldn't let what a few students think move me, but it's something I've taken into consideration. Just giving my opinion.

I stayed at the airport Microtel Inn and Suites on Rockville; it was about $70. They have a free shuttle to/from the airport (but not to anywhere else). Taxi from the Microtel Inn to the campus was about $15-20. It took about 20 minutes to get to the school at 7 am. There was no traffic at that time. Hope this helps!

I live in Indy and I would say you're fine to get a cheaper hotel closer to the airport than campus. It's typically a 20 minute drive from the airport to downtown on a good day. Now, if you are traveling between 7:30-9:00am, you WILL hit rush hour traffic, but it's not completely terrible, just typical big-city traffic. It does get pretty congested as you get onto campus between 8-10am though, and parking can be difficult. Just give yourself a generous time cushion and you will be a-ok 🙂 Good luck!!

Can any current student or applicant with a good understanding of this whole competency curriculum explain this to me? I read the webpage about it but it doesn't really make any sense to me..

Hey, does anyone know what the MS1 schedule looks like for the year? As far as how much time is spent in lecture, and how much independent learning time there is? Thanks in advance!

I kinda have a similar question as I will be coming from new jersey. I guess since schools are in session, morning rides will normally have to deal with high traffic. I have booked a hotel close to the airport (extended stay america) from which I will be driving in my rental car to the school. My gps gives me an estimate of about 16 minutes without traffic, but I intend to leave as early as 6am since I have to check in 8: 15 am.

I'm traveling from phx too! Leaving tomorrow. Staying close to school, if anyone wants to meet/share cab or anything let me know! Be there tomorrow evening until Thursday morning. Last time I was in Indy btw the traffic was not an issue for me. Leave with plenty of time just in case!

Interviewed at the Terre Haute campus today, it was very conversational and laid back! The other applicants were also very pleasant to chat with!

Those of you who did EDP, how did you decide to go for it, and what were your scores like? I'm strongly considering it but have a few questions/concerns.

I've lived 20 minutes from downtown my whole life, and my mom has been a nurse for IU Health for years. I've shadowed family friends who are physicians at IU/Riley, so I feel like I have a strong connection to IU. My GPA right now is a 3.94 and my extracurriculars are good as far as clinical/research/volunteering. My MCAT is still pending because I take it in June, but I have a light semester and I'm grinding out as much review material as possible. Is June too late of an MCAT date to do EDP? Registration opened today and every seat in the continental US for May exams was full in four hours, so I had to go with June. What MCAT range (using the old scoring system) should I be shooting for if I hope to do EDP? It feels really risky to throw everything on the line for IUSM, but it really is where I'd like to attend.
