2014-2015 Johns Hopkins University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Tell them Nutella needs you and Penguin to be accepted. 🙁 Crossing my fingers you guys are the first off of that WL.
"Hi, hello, my name is Wolverine. At the risk of appearing forward, I must cautiously warn you that you have potentially peeved one of your newest and most promising students. She goes by the name of Nutella, but do not be fooled by her hazelnut halo; she is as dangerous as they come. She has but one demand, which I urge you to take very seriously: accept the penguin and the wolverine from your alternate list, or else she will spread dark (chocolatey) revenge all over your totally beautiful sim center."

Sound safe, right? I'll let you know how it goes!

Perfect. 😉 But I would never waste good hazelnut-chocolate spread to vandalize their beautiful sim center. I'd probably just spend the following years seething in silent angst.

Absolutely recommend. My student hosts were utterly invaluable in providing me with a better understanding of the JH philosophy and student body composition, philosophy, mentality, etc. I stayed with a pair of students who lived 15 minutes from the admissions office, and they took me to a class with them in the morning. It really wasn't a long walk, and I spent the entire time talking to my hosts anyway.

10/10 would recommend student hosting.
Hi! Would you please share with me how you found your host? Or a recommendation for an affordable hotel or air bnb? Thank you!

I believe there were instructions about it in the original interview invitation email. Isn't there a pdf link in there with a list of student hosts? I just reached out to someone from my home state and they responded immediately. Hope that helps!

This would totally work, proof: I mentioned hella's name during my post interview chat with the dean at Sinai by which time hella had long been accepted. Pretty sure that's the reason they let me in. 😉

When sending thank yous to interviewers, did you send it directly to your interviewer, or to Ms. Mazza, or both?

For my faculty interviewer I sent the thank you email directly to her, but for my student interviewer I sent the email to Ms. Mazza so that she could pass it along to him.

Did you end up contacting them about waitlist?

Accepted? Congrats - we can't wait for you to join our family!

Waitlisted? Keep your head high, seriously. Many from my class (including me) are from the waitlist.

Questions? PM me 🙂

Are they still sending interviews? Are they receptive to Letter of intent pre interview?

Recent IIs?
IIRC, the last interviews are late Feb and they email you your interview date ~2 weeks prior. So I suspect the last set of II's will probably be going out soon (obligatory massive grain of salt - this is just my speculation).

Seems like reasonable speculation

Can anyone provide suggestions for post-interview updates? I have a lot to talk about but don't want to write them a novel. For anyone who has already submitted, what was the length of your update and did you also include a statement of intent? Thank you so much!

n = 1, but I sent in a 3/4 page update (3 paragraphs) that covered recent developments at my job, a new pub, and grades not included on my AMCAS.

Didn't include a statement of intent, but I closed with a sentence or two that reaffirmed my interest in the school.

Good luck! :luck:

Did you submit the update as an attached word document or just write it into the body of an email to Ms. Mazza? Also did you address it to the whole committee, or just Ms. Mazza?

When did you submit the update relative to your interview?

Thank you!

FYI, for mine, I submitted it as an attached word document and addressed it to the whole committee. I sent it a few days after my interview since I interviewed ~1 month before the first round of decisions and wanted to give them time before the Dec 15 announcement. Also, mine was a page long.

All y'all waitlisted folk.. should we still send in financial aid applications?

Anyone have an idea of how large the waitlist is approximately?

I know people were talking about completing the JHU Institutional Aid Information Sheet via the Net Partner student portal a while ago. Contacted the fin aid office and they said it would be sent to us around mid-March to complete.

Hope this helps!

For people who interviewed in the last batch, do you remember when they said last round of acceptances go out? I seem to remember April, but anything more specific?

April 3rd, I believe.

Although it sounded like it could possibly be earlier.

Hey guys, I apologize in advance if this question has been asked before but is Hopkins receptive to new letters of recommendation? If yes, does anyone know the proper submission process for them? Thanks!

I have the same question. Would definitely appreciate a response if anyone knows.

Does anyone know if alternate list movement is supposed to start in April? Or not until the first week of May?

Does anyone recall if Hopkins does internal ranking for pre-clinical? i.e. is it true p/f. Also, does it do AOA? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the preclinical is true P/F. Going by the appendix in this paper, the MSPE evaluations for JHU students is as follows: "Incomplete data. The summary paragraph sometimes concludes with a Most Confident and Enthusiastic recommendation, or with a Confident and Enthusiastic recommendation. But there are no appendices that define a student's performance relative to his or her peers."

Can't recall what the AOA policy is. They do have an AOA chapter, but I think nominations are extended post-match. But don't quote me on that. 😉

Anyone else waiting for their post-interview decision as well?
I interviewed in mid January --- so I believe my decision should be coming soon, maybe this or next week? Does anyone know? 🙂
Thanks!!

This Friday!! I'm dying.

I'm dying.
+1 Interviewed early Jan. Hoping for my first acceptance of the cycle, but also trying to not get my hopes too high. Honestly, I probably should have already started gearing up for a re-app cycle 🙁, but I'm still holding out for Johnny.:xf:

Hmm I thought Hopkins had a "batched" interview process where decisions come out three times a year (December ~12, January 31st, and April 3rd). So I thought people who interviewed in January would have heard back on the January 31st decision release. Does anyone have insights into this?

Bolded is correct (though I also don't know how the April 3rd date was confirmed). Unfortunately (AFAIK) January interviews are the start the 3rd batch. I would assume it breaks down every 2 months: 1st batch: sept, oct. 2nd batch: nov, dec. 3rd batch: jan, feb.
So is it Friday for sure? You say it with confidence so I suppose you have some insight.
I had seen someone else post this date a few months back ITT as well. I don't know where they're getting it from, but it sounds about right to me (all we were told on interview day was "expect the first week of April."

EDIT: it was the same poster @cosmicowl who posted the Apr 3rd date a few pages back. I'm assuming s/he came to this conclusion because second look is on Apr 9th-12th and they would likely give all final decisions prior to their second look date (*grain of salt*).

Right, that's all I remembered them saying was early April. The 12th, and the 30th* (not what cosmicowl said but may be what he/she meant since it was the actual day) were all on Fridays so April 3rd is probably a safe bet.

See edit + the Friday thing makes sense too 👍
