2014-2015 Quinnipiac University Application Thread

Also, for everyone worried about not putting primary care as your career interest: Don't worry, it's fine. We have a lot of M1's who said that they weren't sure about what field they wanted to go into.

Like you guys, I felt that the school was really pushing primary care while I was applying. Once we started school, there really hasn't been too much emphasis on it - they explicitly said that they want us to train us to have a "primary care mindset" (having broad understanding and big-picture perspective), no matter if we go into derm or pediatrics.

How has M1 been? Lots of lectures and exam focus? Or independent learning and group-discussion?

How different does it feel than your undergrad experience, besides the content?

those interviewing 10/24/14: anyone want to split for a hotel room?

M1 has been awesome! My classmates are great, the school is beautiful, and our professors are AMAZING. I can't emphasize enough how great the professors are here. I come from a large public university, where the profs were mostly focused on research and were (generally) subpar teachers. Here, the faculty focuses on teaching, and it shows. Some professors knew my name before I even met them, which was surprising but showed that they really care about you individually.

We've been in school for about a month and a half now, and I feel like most of that time was spent trying to find the most efficient/high-yield method of studying. There's TONS of material to digest. Time management has been crucial, as well as knowing what to focus on.

I feel like our curriculum is very well balanced between lectures and small groups (PBL, I guess). MWF are shorter days (8-12), with about 2-3 hours of lecture and 1-2 hours of small group discussions each day. TTh are longer (8-5), but typically have lighter material like clinical skills, capstone presentations, etc. All lectures are recorded (and attendance isn't mandatory, but most people go and I learn better in person), but small group attendance is required

Compared to undergrad, it's a lot different. First, there's 8 AM classes every day, which was an adjustment because I'm not a morning person. Second, the amount of material that we go through in a short amount of time is staggering, but that's just med school in general. For example, we went through all of nucleotide metabolism, in graduate-level detail, in one lecture.

They didn't send a complete email, did they?? How do you know if you're complete? The checkmarks on the status page?

I can only speak from personal experience, but I interviewed late February last year and was accepted outright in the first week of April. This seems to keep with the 6 week timeline that they told me during my interview.

I'd imagine that early interviewees would hear back more quickly.
Thank you so much🙂

I interviewed here recently. The school is very new and modern, I loved it. The current students seemed happy and were very helpful which is a big deal for me. Overall, I believe this school has the leadership to get things done. The students play an important role in the future of the school which I fell in love with.

The school is truly pass/fail. However, one thing I would like to ask you, netterm1, is if students can get AOA even though its pass/fail. I never understood how that worked.

Some information on the session:
The interviews were conversational. I liked both of my interviewers, very relaxed. They've gotten somewhere around 6000 applications and expect around 4000 secondaries to be turned in. The whole interview day lasted from 11am to 5pm.

Hey Plutonium, glad you had a good experience. You wouldn't have happened to interview on the day when we had a fire alarm, did you?

The AOA question is a really good one. As far as I know, AOA will be determined by 3rd year clerkship grades, similar to a lot of other med schools that are P/F in the preclinical years.

Another note on the helpfulness of the students here: the now-M2s started a Big sib/little sib program over the summer. When I got accepted, I filled out a form that matched me to an M2 with similar interests/background, and we got in touch. My big sib has helped me A LOT in making the transition to med school a smooth one: offering rides, meals, exam advice, extra materials, etc. So...yeah, the students here are awesome 🙂

That's awesome. Netter really sounds like a great place. Fire alarm you say? Yes, I was there. Haha.

hey guys,

question:
I submitted in July( mid-July). I completed the whole application thing.
Under the documents portion it says all my LORs have been received, but in my application status page . ..it says application not complete.

I called admissions about this in July and they said that I was all set.
However, the status page hasn't updated itself and its still saying that my application is incomplete.

Is it worth calling admissions to find out why the status isn't updated?

can't hurt, would take less than 10 minutes

Did anyone submit additional LORs on amcas after submitting the secondary? If yes, do those letters show up on your status tab?

Yes and Yes, under the "Document Status" tab, about 2.5 weeks after my secondary was submitted.

Random question: anyone know QUs screening process? I got a secondary, just curious.

So does Quinnipiac have no overnight stay program with med students? I haven't been able to find anything on their website/emails related to this

How does Quinnipiac screen? I received an email today that they would not be sending me a secondary.

That stinks :/ All it says on MSAR is that "all screened applicants determined to meet minimum eligibility requirements" receive a secondary." I can't really find a place on their website where they say exactly what those minimum requirements are, although maybe someone else knows for sure?

I submitted the secondary on July 28th, but I was awaiting a new MCAT score, which came in on August 12th; does anyone know which date the school considers my "complete date"?

The latter. Most apps aren't even considered until scores and letters are in.

One thing I learned from interviewing here recently: have a lot of random facts about yourself prepared. Literally everyone in admissions who talks to you will want to go around the room with introductions, and you don't want to be that guy that gives the same "fun fact" to each faculty member. 🙂

I feel like I might have been passed over as well. Complete 7/30 and no word yet. 68 LizzyM, OOS.

For people who have interviewed here a month ago or more - we're supposed to hear back definitively on October 15th whether we were accepted, rejected, or waitlisted, right?

I would imagine so. Imma give them a call and ask politely if this is indeed the case.

Edit: They said if you interviewed in August for example, you should expect your decision on October 15th, or within a week from that date. The only possible delay would be if neither of the two interviewers can make it to an admissions committee meeting. They said they require at least 1/2 present to do a full evaluation and vote.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, that definitely helps! Good luck and congrats on getting accepted somewhere btw! I interviewed early September, so now I'm anxiously awaiting the 15th...

complete 7/1. no word, silent rejection?

I don't think frank netter gives out rejections (do they?); I think we have been silently rejected 🙁

Don't give up hope yet. I was complete 7/12ish and just got an II here a couple of weeks ago. I also thought I had a silent rejection, but I think the early apps are still under consideration. Good luck to you both and hopefully you'll get one soon!

I hope this is true. Trying to keep the hope alive. 🤔
