2015-2016 Boston University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I didn't know schools could put you on hold for something like that! Could you say, "I'm looking for a job in XYZ field and hoping to volunteer at ABC etc etc" - something general and honest but basically just saying you don't know what you're doing, only in more proactive terms?
That's what got me put on hold haha, at the time I submitted I had interviewed for several positions, but as of now I still haven't heard back from any of them...

Oh no! Sorry for being redundant, haha. Well, I hope you hear back soon- although it does seem strange to me that they won't consider your application as is! Best of luck 🙂

BU's and Temples requirement to get IAs explained via mail is a bit frustrating. My school doesn't even do this

Hope to get it sorted somehow

I had trouble with this as well. I just asked my dean to send a letter signed explaining the situation and the outcome. Just ask for that, it should be good enough.

Did anyone write anything for that "extra education essay"?

I lived in Indonesia for a summer, I'm wondering if I should write about that experience there

Are psychology courses considered humanities at BU? At my school they're under social sciences but I feel like I've seen different classifications for other schools...

Edit: nvm I just saw the part in brackets where it says "may include literature, social sciences, philosophy, the arts, and language". Would a Law course be included though?

Yes edit: law would be government which is social science which is a humanities discipline

Whaaaa? They are not the same thing..
The social sciences are the social sciences. The humanities are the humanities. They are completely different. Law is primarily a social sciences discipline. Humanities is not defined as "everything non-STEM"

Not that it matters so much for the secondary but I had to speak up to clarify

BU includes social sciences when they ask for humanities

Yeah I know, I noted that this doesn't matter for the secondary. They really shouldn't reinforce the stereotype that "humanities" = "non-STEM" 🙁

Anyone get an II without writing the educational essay?

II! Complete 7/19. LizzyM 71.6. So excited!!!!! Can't believe I made it to this stage. FYI, I also left the optional essay totally blank. I figured I'd stated everything I needed to in my personal statement. Looking forward to seeing Boston in the fall.

I like the specificity haha

Haha I saw someone post w/ decimals above and just added it in without thinking about it. 🙂

when did you submit??

did you not read the two posts literally right above yours?

there were two optional essays. One was education, the other was the traditional "anything else?" Question

I am hoping to get my secondary out tonight (work full time, so balance apps with that).
Two questions:

1. For the secondary, when it asks for personal connections, what is it referring to? I have worked with a PI who teaches at the medical school. Am I able to mention her as a connection? This frankly would be more meaningful than any family connection as a lot of sweat and blood went into those years of work. So I'm hoping it counts :/
2. My AMCAS isn't verified yet. I'm hoping that will happen in the next 1-1.5 weeks. How greatly will this late verification alone diminish my chances of II?

Has anyone who did the MAMS program at BU gotten an II yet? Just curious.

Yup, MAMS student here. I wouldn't worry too much though because a bunch of my more qualified friends from the program haven't gotten interviews yet, I think my application was just processed earlier than others.

I'm confused about the grid. Any help would be appreciated! 🙂

For example: If I took 5 biology classes (3 in one semester & 2 in the other) should I input the number "2" for two semesters of bio? Or should I put in "5" for taking five bio courses? And should I include AP courses even if I didn't use them to get exempt from taking courses at my preferred institution?

Anyone have the link to the secondary page login? Emails are not directing me to the correct page and I forgot to bookmark.

I know this sounds paranoid but I have been following this thread and seeing people get II's who submitted later and later and I was complete 7/15 LizzyM 73.5 and I haven't heard anything. Should I be concerned or is it normal for BU to maybe go out of order? Is anyone in the same boat as me and maybe they just don't want to give us an II but we haven't been rejected yet? Does BU do rejections this early?

Sincerely,
Paranoid PreMed

I'm in the same boat! If you think about the vast number of applicants BU (and any med school, for that matter) has each cycle, they have to have a more sophisticated system than simply submit date- we have no way of knowing when our application is going to be reviewed, and even then it could be months of waiting if they are comparing us to other applicants over and over again. I'm not giving up hope until I have an actual rejection in my inbox.

I was complete 7/10 with a LizzyM score similar to you. I wouldn't worry about it. I think BU gets about 14,000 applications, and no one know the rhyme or reason to how or why they go through them they way that they do.

Also, idk if BU is one of them, but there are a lot of schools that don't give out rejections until near the end of the season and it is just implied by not receiving an interview by March. Therefore, we got a ways left to go.

Anyone know the accepted/interview ratio at BU?

does anyone have a link regarding hotel accommodations near BU Medical campus for the interview? the link just didn't work from their email
