2015-2016 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone know if they've sent out any post interview rejections?

My understanding was that only people at the very top receive immediate acceptances. Those in the middle either have to wait until later, or will be waitlisted.

I don't know about this year but on my interview day I was told that in the past like 5 years or so there has only been one student that didn't get into the residency they wanted (ortho?) because of international status so they had to match into radiology instead. Plus on their match list history for the last five years they only had one student that was listed as not entering a residency. They apparently matched but wanted to pursue biotech instead.

Haha yeah when they said that I was definitely thinking the same.
Dartmouth definitely has an impressive match list each year.

That is awesome!

Btw, I have international status, so would that put me at a disadvantage for matching to residency? 🙁

Not to sound harsh, but when we already don't have enough training spots for American students, what makes you think this wouldn't be the case?

It depends on the program and it depends on what kind of visa you want.

H1B is significantly more difficult to find a program willing to sponsor it. Many outright won't.

Interestingly, when you look at the limited data on matching, less than half of neurosurg programs accepted even Canadian students. But when you look at some other specialties there aren't the same restrictions.

This isn't entirely true. There are generally enough spots for U.S. allopathic seniors and grads, but there are also many spots US students do not want. Currently IMGs fill this gap. Now granted with increased med student enrolment and new schools, it'll become a bigger challenge.

Thank you for your response. I understand that space is a limiting factor for residency training, just as it is for medical training. However, there are limited spots for medical students in US medical schools as well. Yet, many international students are accepted.

Getting into medical school is difficult for international students, but many medical schools (and Dartmouth is one of them) don't factor in residency status when considering an applicant.

Using your logic, it wouldn't make sense to accept well qualified international students into medical schools (or perhaps any school for that matter), simply because there aren't even enough spots for all the US students who would like to get in.

I thought residency matching, like medical school admission, might be based solely on a meritocracy, at least at some schools. Apparently, that may not be the case.

Thank you very much for this information. I really appreciate it.

I wonder if it will be different for me since I have DACA. I am a US resident, just not a permanent resident green card holder. I won't need any visa sponsorship is my point.

If you don't need visa sponsorship in order to work, you're likely to be considered as though you are a PR or citizen.

lets speculate... how many acceptances do you think they give out a week?

Congratulations on having traversed a difficult road successfully. I am sure it must have been quite challenging.

You are discussing 'Residency', so it is not clear to me if you are already a student at Giesel. I see that you are an "Accepted" student,

DACA candidates may be considered for medical school admissions, but it is in the area of 'funding' their education that they will find the biggest challenge. As far as I know, Federal programs do not currently support funding of DACA students, neither do (typically) state programs. You may want to look into those and other 'private' organizations.

As for 'residency', it is my belief (and perhaps my opinion) that it is a "job", not admissions into an educational institution. Hence, as a DACA candidate I think you will be considered on par with other US PR and Citizen candidates. However, DACA rules are still 'evolving' and relatively new. I suggest that you speak with the college that you have been admitted into, or seek admission into, in that particular State for college-and-State-specific opportunities, or even consult with appropriate people within the AMA. You may also need to speak with an immigration Attorney. Even though you are not looking for immigration into the USA, legally speaking, your future status remains 'deferred' and still needs to be finalized. It is possible that this may have some bearing on being considered for Residency. Good luck!

Congratulations to all who've been interviewed and accepted this year

I am currently a non trad hoping to attend Geisel. I was wondering if anyone with multiple mcat scores was accepted. And if so how that affected your experience

Thanks so much!

I retook the MCAT, but I had a *big* improvement and I was at their median score. Never came up in my interviews. This school is all about fit if you get an interview. Don't dwell on scores once you are invited.

No acceptances going out...? >(

Hey! I took the MCAT three times.. They never asked me about it either and I was accepted. I think Geisel is more concerned about your application as a whole. Good luck! 🙂
Hey hope you don't mind me asking but URM or not URM? I'm URM myself and was hoping for a point of comparison (took multiple MCATs)
