2015-2016 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm in the same exact situation, except I live in the middle of a cornfield in the Midwest, with very expensive air travel.
I'm curious to what the "in the area" emails are supposed to do? Is it trying to have them give me a pity interview? Does it simply speed up their review time of my file?
I hate to contact them and look needy but, truth is... I'M SO NEEDY RIGHT NOW.

EDIT: Sent my first ETA email... I feel dirty.
I don't see how it could be looked down upon, if you are confident in your app and really interested in the school. Budgeting is important 🙂

Ha okay, good. I just didn't want to seem like I was asking for special treatment but it would be super helpful if I could save some money! I can only eat so much ramen.

Wait, so does that mean submitting an "in the area" email actually resulted in an II?

Nah, I just got an email back from admissions this morning, saying that they'll keep this info in mind if they decide to extend an invite.

Anyone here a current student? What do you like/dislike about the school and why did you choose it? Any replies would be suuper appreciated!

When were the latest IIs sent out!

CyrilFiggis: I was complete mid-late July. I'm pretty sure they're extending II's much more slowly than some of the other schools but then again I'm not convinced that the review process is linear.

medic86: Notification was by email! No change on the website yet.

I'm kind of anxious; I have not interviewed yet and planned on my first being Oct 21 (and haven't really prepared at all yet...). I'm going to take either the 13th or 15th so that's just over a week to get ready geeezzz!

Do you think it's too late to submit a secondary here?

I wouldn't say *too* late but certainly firmly with the category of late in general. Unless you have stellar stats/ECs, your chances will be more negatively affected than not.

Do you think it's too late to submit a secondary here?
Not if you're able to be realistic about the fact that you will have to wait a lonnnnnnnnng time for any news or response, and that's OK.
But don't submit if you're expecting to hear back in a month or 2, or even 3; it's too late for that.

Is Geisel rolling admissions? Would it be a great disadvantage to move my interview from mid/late October (proposed dates) to December or even January? I'm living outside the US this year and planning to complete all of my interviews during those two time periods. Thank you for your help!

During the interview they were very clear that they are conservative about giving early acceptances to early interviewees, so that they have enough spots for people who are interviewing later. So yes it is rolling, but the bulk of acceptances won't be given until much later in the cycle.
That being said, there will be a few acceptances going out starting next week at the earliest, and that means that there will be fewer spots by the time you'd interview in Dec/Jan. I would say it would put you at only a slight disadvantage but it's unlikely to ruin your chances overall.

Thanks @tick_tock_tick_tock! Checked your MDApps and seems like you had a great experience 🙂 Quick question - did you fly out of LEB? I'm looking for flights now, but notice the last flight out of LEB --> BOS is around 5pm. Not sure if anyone else has experience with making this flight after the stated 3:30 end time (if you do not go on the tour).

The tour is optional (I didn't feel the need to go on it).
As for flying, I'm about 3 hours away so I drove =) there were a few people I met there, though, that had flown into LEB (tiny tiny planes).

I just got an II (so excited!) and am in a very similar situation (living outside the US), so my boss is unlikely to accommodate my request to miss most of next week on such short notice to fly back. I'm going to try and schedule it for late November and hopefully that can work. Best of luck! Can anyone who has talked with the adcom confirm that they are receptive to changing interview dates? On the email it sounded like they were telling rather than asking about confirming one of the three dates in the next 10 days, so I hope I'm not disappointing them by asking to push it back a few weeks.

Are you guys getting IIs this late at night, or do you just mean earlier in the day? 😛

Hey all, question about status updates. Did Dartmouth let you know on the portal when your application was under review? Or does it stay "Your secondary application has been received and is in process"?

My portal still says that and I already have an II. So yes it appears that is the last status at the moment and there isn't an explicit under review one.

II - LizzyM ~71, complete 7/29, non-trad with lots of research experience

Does anyone know if Dartmouth has student hosts for interviews?
Yes, there are hosts! There should be instructions on how to access/contact potential hosts.

Congrats!

Anyone with a recent II, have they scheduled for November yet?

what day of the week does Dartmouth interview

They'll schedule you out later if you ask. I got the impression that they're pretty flexible.
I've gathered that as well.

I haven't been offered a II yet, but I sent an ITA since I'm already going to be in Boston in November. Just trying to finalize my flights and figured if they've already passed my dates, I could go ahead and book it. Guess I'll give it one more week.

It looks like they have not passed your dates yet. My three choices (II yesterday) were October 15, 20, 22, so there are still plenty in November I'm sure.

Recent post-interview thoughts: went from top 25% of my application list to definite top choice at this point. Good luck to anyone interviewing here. This program is absolutely fantastic, the Geisel team is very kind and engaging, and I really hope I hear great news.

I hope so too, man!

Interviews are Tues and Thurs. Admissions office seems quite accommodating when it comes to reasonable requests for later interview dates, especially if you're travelling across the country.

Cyril, this morning I was offered Nov 5 or 10 when I asked if it would be possible to postpone from mid Oct, so it looks like Nov still has plenty of spots. Hopefully you'll hear from them soon (oh and don't bother checking the portal obsessively; mine still hasn't changed and I got the email three days ago)!

Likewise, I emailed them about pushing for a later date when I was stateside,
and they could not have been more warm and accommodating.

Thanks for posting this. Just to get more insight if possible, what specifically made their program fantastic in your eyes? Best of luck.

Dartmouth is a little slower this year eh, I went through past threads and based on when I was complete I should have heard back about a month ago!

Fingers crossed.

Sure thing! In no particular order of importance (to me): very strong research, many different specialty centers within the main hospital, very community-focused environment, everyone seems to know each other on campus, it's in the middle of the woods (this may be a dealbreaker for many city kids, but I personally love the outdoors), top-notch clinical rotations with very small groups, many scholar programs that you can apply for (e.g. urban health, rural health, global health), and it's right by the undergrad campus if you like that kind of thing, lots of flexibility to take other classes at the business school/engineering school/etc., very transparent about the financial aid process (they even gave a 45 minute talk about it on interview day!). Hope this helps, if you have specific questions about interview day, feel free to PM me. It was so great, I'm trying hard not to get too attached because I can easily be rejected next week for all we know!!!

Anyone heard back yet as they said they'd start offering acceptances today? Had an interview about a month ago and I'm hoping against the odds I'll get an acceptance today/soon! *fingers crossed*
