2015-2016 Duke University Application Thread

Does Duke take post-interview updates?

At my interview Dean Armstrong said if you have not sent in the survey, then you can still add updates...once you submit the post-interview survey, your file is supposed to go to the main Admissions Committee!

This might be a silly question but do they only reject post interview applicants at the same time that they accept applicants or do they reject post interview applicants at any point in time after the interview?

I believe all decisions come out roughly around the same time.

JUST realized I sent in only 3 letters instead of the required 4 letters (well, one LOR writer took forever and I marked as "no longer being sent", not realizing that Duke specifies 4 LORs). It doesn't come as a complete surprise to me to have made such an oversight given I applied to so many schools, but I am less than pleased with myself. Boo. In other news, it appears they extend IIs through the last week of Jan (according to last year's thread) even though their website makes it seem as if they stop extending IIs 11/15 (which wouldn't make much sense, as that is their secondary deadline date, and IIs have been extended after 11/15) so there's hope still. Good luck all!

@ImmunoLove That's a bummer!! Duke's secondary wasn't the easiest.

I'm waiting for the rejection ax this week.. at least for MD/PhD applicants, their website sounds pretty clear that "All applicants will be notified by the end of the first week of January as to whether or not they are invited to interview with Duke MSTP"

Duke is just down the road from my work and I loved their facilities when I volunteered there, so this one is going to be super disappointing.

Were we supposed to get a complete email? Or is the application complete upon submission of the secondary application?

No complete email. After submission of secondary, the only correspondence will be whether invited to interview, as "it is a self-managed process" per their secondary invite email. You can check the status of your application by signing into the system and checking out the "dashboard".

Sweet. Thanks for the response! 🙂

Does anybody know if Duke accepts or pays attention to letters of intent? Some schools I've interviewed at have mentioned these, but I interviewed here in early September and am not sure if they are open to them.

So on Duke's medical school website the FAFSA code listed to use is for the general undergrad university, but on FAFSA there is also an option to add the school of medicine. I'm guessing we add the medical school?

look at the powerpoint on their website that they showed us at interviews. It has the code you need

Huh, I don't get the point of having the medical school listed on FAFSA if the code they tell us to add is the general university's code.

I may be wrong, but I think I read somewhere in this thread that Duke has already sent out all their interview invitations (aka done with interviews). Is this true? Does anyone have any information on this from a reliable source? Thanks in advance!

@Pastamahn yea it's a bit confusing, but I'd use the general one since the financial person I spoke to said that FAFSA hasn't updated their codes for Duke yet.
@believeandgetit the admissions head told us at interview that they still have some to give out, and even have a backup date set just in case. You still have a chance!

Are they done sending out interview invites? I've been complete since early August. My application still says Under review. But I have a feeling that's it's over.

Look at the two posts above you

I second this. Called today - they still have dates open in February and they are still sending out IIs.

Did they mention how far into February they will be interviewing? Previously on this thread, it was mentioned the last interview date was 2/5, though it was not cited so the source may well be "thin air".

The email I received when I got my interview said that "interviews will tentatively conclude 2/18/2016" hope that helps 🙂 good luck!

I can't think of a better source than talking to someone at the admissions office, lol. I think she said mid-Feb, but I couldn't remember. So, I left that part out. I also asked her about the status of my application, since I haven't heard anything. She made me hopeful.

Thanks for the confirmation 🙂.

I agree the admissions office is one of the best sources (which is why i asked you specifically by what date they stopped interviewing-- you heard from the source itself! It was other posts by other users of which I was weary, not yours...)
🙂

Ohhh. Mmkay lol. Thanks for the clarification 🙂.

Did she reveal to you the status of your application? I didn't know we could ask about that.

Has anyone sent a personal evaluation in addition to the 4 required letters?

Has anyone received a phone call with their interview invite? They called and emailed me

was it fairly short notice? it could be because it's the end of the season they want to make sure people respond right away.

Yah, that's what I figured. Although not super short notice; I'm interviewing on Feb 5th.

Do you have ties to the school? My friend got a phone call + email and her mom went to DukeMed.

When I called Duke I was told 1, they would be extending interviews through February (so you may get one up till the end of January) and 2, they will call to inform you that you have been granted an interview.

For those that have interviewed, did you receive a folder full of info and pamphlets like most medical schools hand out on interview day? I just realized I was never given one or told where to pick one up on my interview day.

Yeah, I interviewed in October and we were given a folder in the end haha

That's unfortunate for me 😳 I remember seeing a stack of them at the beginning of the day and completely forgot about them until I was already on my way home. I'll have to ask the admissions office if I can get one mailed because we were never told to grab one haha

Aww haha sorry about that. I'm looking through the folder right now and it includes a pamphlet about Durham, an alumni magazine, a facts and figure guide, and the match list.

Yah, I do. I went to Duke for undergrad. That could also be why they called. The first thing the guy said was "Hi, this is the admissions office from Duke, your home base"
