2015-2016 Howard University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, I was told they are done with interviewing people now. If you haven't interviewed at Howard, I wish you all the best in your endeavors and I hope you have interviewed (and receive acceptances) at other schools. If this cycle didn't go as well as you had hoped, please do not be discouraged. Believe me when I say, it does not have to be the end of your journey. I was a reapplicant and during my first cycle, I received no interviews. For those waiting for the outcome of your interview, keep in contact with the admissions office but please stay patient. Some people get accepted the week of orientation. Those who have been accepted, welcome to the HUCM family!! Try to enjoy your summer and be refreshed and ready for July!!!
Thanks for the update.

I called and got a hold of them today. They said they're trying to finish up every one waiting by this week, but they're not sure if they'll be able to grant more acceptances because the class is full. I'm sure things can change though...hoping so.

were u able to ask them about your own app or did they just give you general info?

I asked and all they said was that if I hadn't received the out of committee email yet (I haven't, interviewed in April), my app should be processed along with everyone else by the end of the week. It wasn't a super detailed call. What a stressful time

🙁 my heart just sank

Didn't someone say earlier in the thread that students holding multiple acceptances since April 30th, had until May 30th? I was holding on to hope because of that......

You are not alone. My heart sank as well. From previous posts, the class was full but fluid. I winder if it means now that it is full and no longer fluid/fluctuating. Deadline for those with multiple acceptances to choose a school is May 30th. Med schools can also see which of their candidates are holding multiple spaces and anticipate change as thosee candidates opt to attend one school over another. Hopefully, we will know by the end of this week. #StressGalore#

Has anyone received an out of committee letter recently. I'm curious to know if I should even be hopeful. And it didn't mention how long it would take for the letter to be "signed."

I am still waiting for my OOC

When did you get your OOC email and when did u interview?

If you haven't received an OOC email up until this point I'd make an effort to call. I interviewed on 3/23 but hadn't heard a thing for several weeks despite attempted calls (during calling hours) and multiple emails. Finally, last Thursday I called pretty much every number listed in that packet given to us during interview day. It wasn't during allowed calling hours but I kind of just thought, "What is there to lose at this point?" Someone picked up and passed the phone to Ms. Walk. Apparently they'd set my application aside because I'd already gotten an acceptance* elsewhere--which suggests that they might be prioritizing students who have yet to be accepted anywhere. I was then told my application would be included in the Tuesday (5/24) committee meeting if I was still interested in Howard. I said yes because out of all of my interviews this cycle, Howard was my favorite (all of the students and professors I met were really great, and I especially liked the other applicants who were interviewing that day with me--everyone was just mad cool). After a couple of days thinking about everything (their currently "full" class, logistics of possibly moving to DC with less than a month to plan, estimated financial aid, etc.) I finally decided Monday night, before the committee met, to withdraw my application from consideration.

*An aside: When I was told my application hadn't been reviewed because I'd gotten an acceptance elsewhere I paused. I literally made this face:
nick-young-confused-face-300x256_nqlyaa.png

Because I was told on interview day that students who interviewed on 3/23 would hear back (via an OOC email) by the 3rd week of April. My acceptance (the first and only one I received) didn't come until 3-4 weeks after the 3rd week of April. It's probably the type A, over-analytical mind that we pre-med students tend to have, but something about that tidbit of info just seemed strange to me, even if I factor in the fact that they were behind on reviewing applicants. Especially since other applicants who'd interviewed the same day I did had been getting news. Also, I found it strange that the admissions admins kind of just assumed I preferred the other school to Howard.

TL;DR: If you interviewed in March and haven't heard anything yet, call them! Try every number in that info packet you got on interview day, multiple times. And maybe even try calling outside of call hours. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back! I'm rooting for you, and I hope my spot in the Tuesday committee review went to one of y'all! Hopefully good news is on the way.

Wow I hope that ain't what happen with mine

Has this school even sent out rejections for the cycle? I applied, got the email of interest from Ms. Walk, responded to the email, got no interview, sent a letter of intent, still no interview, etc. I am just truly confused as to what is happening. This is the only school I haven't heard back from and its very strange because if the class if full you would think they would AT LEAST send out a rejection notification and not just have applicants wondering what's going on. I know the people who have been actively communicating recently on this thread is probably just concerned about their status after their interview but what about THE people who didn't even get an interview or a rejection for that matter. Is it a silent rejection? Is that even allowed? I would just really like to know. (Sorry for the mini rant but GEESH...)

to be fair...a lot of medical schools do silent rejections....they only notify students about acceptance or waitlist.

also at this point it's safe to assume that your decision was not favorable bc the last interview day was April 27th.

Thanks for responding. I just thought it would be nice to know officially. But even the mere fact that no one answers when you call the office is very frustrating.

Hey no prob and I saw that you have a really good science and overall gpa...the mcat is what hurt you. you should retake the mcat with the goal of scoring a 500+ and you should get some looks if you apply to the right places and apply early.

the class is full guys and they don't expect a lot of people to withdraw oh man.

This is to let you know that your application/folder is out of committee. A decision has been made.

We are not able tell you the decision before the letter is signed. PLEASE DO NOT CALL NOW.

We will let you know the decision as quickly as possible. However, if you were accepted. firm decisions must wait until: (1) we know how many BS/MD students will be accepted based on April MCATs; (2) we know how many student will return from leaves of absence, and (3) we know how many deposits/offered accepted result from April accepts. We anticipate knowing more around June 1.

We will send you an email (followed-up with a hard copy) when a permanent decision has been made.

Any questions, please email me at [email protected]. As usual, do not press reply for this email. I will not see it.

I just wanted to let you know that the process is moving ahead.

Sincerely,

Judith M. Walk, Director
Sharmon Jones, Admissions Officer

This is what I got last Friday. Not feeling tooooo hopeful at all as it wasn't my best interview and my letters of recc weren't that great lmao. Ive never been flustered in any interview in my life... Why this one right . What's done is done though. But just so you guys see what was sent if you haven't received it already.

rejected :/ im pretty convinced that they didnt even look at my application, the last email i received from them was in september

This year showed minimal movement at the hbcus. Lesson: get ur app in early.

I don't think getting your app in early truly guarantees anything. Does it help to some degree? Sure. By looking at it, it seems some people have gotten their apps in early and still no luck. I'm sure schools like what they like in the end. Just MHO.

of course it doesn't...I didn't say that it did either...but I do believe that it may increase your chances of getting an interview....you're better being complete by July than October (that's late and risky)...Getting chosen isn't in your control...but getting your application early because you have higher chances of getting chosen is. Yes they like what they like but that statement kind of leaves things up to chance and I would want to control the parameters I can control...it also does get more competitive as the cycle progresses because there are less spots available...for example, meharry was essentially deadlocked by February...the class was full and they were placing ppl on the top 10% waitlist and only few ppl got off this year....and using past threads as a prediction that hasn't happened...they usually pull a good amount of ppl off the list...same with howard...hucm usually pulls about 15 from their waitlist according to the MSAR...don't think thats happening this year...so an applicant puts themselves in a better position if he/she applies early because they are competing for more available spots
