2015-2016 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'll be hitting 4 months after application submission in a week. Hope that means I'm still in the running for a spring interview? 😕 This place is 5 min from my home I really wanna get an II here
I'm right there with ya.

Same. Lived my entire life 10mins away from the school. I'm hoping for at least an interview

Just passed the two month mark after being complete. Looking at earlier posts it seems that I have a while left to wait

Yeah, you might be in for the long haul. I just passed the 4 month mark, so the whole "two month" estimate is definitely not a strict deadline.

Did anyone who interviewed in September hear back about waitlist or rejection decision?

Just got a pre-interview rejection (complete 7/8)

pre interview rejection, complete mid July, IS, LM 75.
um, ouch? where did i go wrong...

Is this the first round of pre- II rejections?

Well, it's been 7 weeks post-interview and nothing... Don't feel like this is a good sign

would love some current student insight. Really trying to get a feel for Stony after being accepted. Are lectures recorded? Would you say that you could study from home most days or are there lots of structured class time? Thanks

Not a current student, but I've been informed lectures are recorded.

Yes, all lectures are recorded. You'll have lecture pretty much every day of the week with it ending earlier in the day depending on the class occupying that date(i.e. there is a class that is daily and another that is tri-weekly). You technically could study from home on most days since none of the regularly occurring classes require attendance, but at least for the classes with labs such as anatomy, it's in your best interest to attend. With the new 1.5 year pre-clinical curriculum the pace is insane, but if you've been accepted I have no doubt that you can keep up. It's a very collaborative and friendly environment but I imagine that can change depending on the students accepted for your year.

Wait listed (no mention of HPWL) interviewed mid Nov. Pretty surprised / bummed. Anyone have word if there is a Hpwl or if there's movement ?

^
To those who are WL, would you choose Stony Brook over your other acceptances, and your reasoning?
Im trying to determine how to choose between schools.

Hey breezy, sorry to hear about the waitlist, hang in there.

Seems like such a quick turnaround compared to the 6 week timeframe they gave. I interviewed on like 11/10...no news = good news?

Grew up in the area. Great school districts if my spouse and I wanna have kids within those years and I want to practice on the island/NYC area. Other acceptances by match lists don't provide me the comfort of saying yeah I can go home during residency. Didn't like the facilities or student attitude at one location and other school I liked a lot just disliked the area / job potential for spouse may not be good. Like the 1.5 year preclinical, research opps and available diversity in population and cases. Overall stony is a better school than my acceptances with more opportunities.

I wasn't expecting news for at least three more weeks. I was pretty shocked and my interviewers all but glowed about me, my fit, and how if my other interviews went well they couldn't see a reason why I wouldn't be here if I wanted to be. Pretty surprised.
I'd say no news is good news.

From what I've heard, if you get HPWL'd you have a good chance of becoming accepted. A student I talked to said a good portion of their class was from the high-priority wait list.

Except no one at this point is HPWL because the class isn't full 🙁 (per radish's post, which makes a lot of sense)
Well, I guess we'll see what May has to offer.

Rejected. Lived my whole life in an area where Stony does low-income outreach stuff. Kind of disappointed

Hey guys, when do you think an update letter / LOI is useful for getting off a waitlist? I have a fair amount of things to update on that focus on my weaker points of my app.. Do you send it earlier even though movement doesnt occur til April/May or do you send later because thats when they'd start re-looking at apps? I am very unfamiliar with waitlist strategies..

Have no experience on this myself, so please take my suggestion with a grain of salt. My thoughts on this: if you had all the major updates at this moment, you should submit the update letter; if waiting for one or two extra months allow you to update more significant things, then you may hold on it a little bit. Best of luck!

anyone / current students have any insight into stony brook ophto opportunities for research / clinical experience?

Just withdrew the day before my interview (another acceptance elsewhere). I feel pretty awful about it, but Nancy was the sweetest person ever on the phone and totally understood.

GL to everyone else in the running and I hope you make it into this great school!

Just interviewed here earlier today. The faculty members with whom I interviewed seemed very kind, open-minded, and genuinely interested in the success of the students. The staff members in the admissions office were very friendly and welcoming. The interviewers were not at all confrontational and appear as excellent educators. The medical students who gave the tour were talkative, honest and enthusiastic.

The interviews were open file, and both interviewers read all of my LORs, AMCAS and secondary essay. If you generally have an easy time with interviews, the best preparation is to be the best version of yourself in a way that is candid -- at least, that's what I did, and I feel it went well. If you have research experience listed on your app, make sure you can discuss it.

Also, the SOM admissions office is in the medical center. The only admissions office listed on the campus map is the undergraduate admissions office. My GPS didn't lead me to 101 Nichols, so make sure to just go straight to the hospital. You can even park by the undergraduate admissions office and walk down Circle Road past the inn/hotel (on your left) and then through the tunnel (on your left) if you miss or can't find the hospital entrance/parking.
