Rejected. Application complete 7/8 or 9, early July either way. Put me on hold for 6 months just for a rejection? Cole world stony

Just got an e-mail re: second look!

Stony Brook Revisited - Friday, April 15th (10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.)
This program will give you the opportunity to meet more of our faculty and current students, hear about the LEARN curriculum, partake in an exercise in our Clinical Skills Center and meet many of the students with whom you will be sharing classes with over the next four years. (Invite email will be sent in March.)

Rejected after 5+ months of silence. Complete mid/late July. 🙁

I have no idea what's going on here. I have been complete since the end of July, and am now approaching 5.5 months since date marked complete. Does Stony still send out interviews until March? I'm slowly losing hope🙁

At SB, no news is good news

Who else is set on Stony Brook as their first choice!
This is coming from an OOS student 🙂

My son is still waiting to hear anything from Stony Brook. He sent in his materials in late August/Early Sept. He graduated from Cornell in May 2015 with a 3.5 GPA and got a 35 MCAT. He has a ton of EC's and doctor recommendation letters. Stony is/was his first choice. Thought by now he would have gotten a interview or a rejection...but nothing. I know his GPA is a bit lower than optimum but he did well on his MCAT, which we thought would help. Hell...he hasn't heard from Downstate, Buffalo, Mt. Sinai and a whole bunch of other schools he applied to. We are pretty much clueless why he has not heard from anyone...he checked his applications and they are show as submitted...he did his secondaries on time as well.

This is kind of odd. Has he heard from other schools?

How unique are his ECs?

He worked for 4 years during the summer for the Medical Examiners office. He has 100's of volunteer hours at the hospital. He volunteered for 100's of hours at the ASPCA while at Cornell. He shadowed doctors...he also has recommendations from doctors. He was VP of his fraternity while at Cornell and provided a number of community events. This is the short list.

Just checked my portal. It says that they sent me a decision on my candidacy (must be a rejection because I didn't interview here) on the 5th, but I never got it. I checked my trash and everything. If you haven't heard, check your portals.

(For those who are still hoping for an interview) Last month, I decided I would send a letter of interest/update to admissions telling them that I was still very much interested in the school. I proceeded to update them on my current activities. Lo and behold, a week later I received an interview invite. Maybe it was coincidence or maybe they read my letter and decided to give me a chance. It is pretty much a shot in the dark, but if you're still looking for that II, try sending them an update letter if you haven't already.

OOS; LizzyM: 71

Congrats to those accepted here. You guys mind sharing your stats?

I was accepted with a LizzyM of 66-69, took the old MCAT. In-state, ton of research. The rest are in my MDApps. Best of luck and let me know if you have more questions!

To those accepted: Anyone else deciding between SB and other SUNYs? I'm still waiting on a couple of private schools but as it stands I'm choosing between SUNYs. Would love to compare notes/experiences.

Just don't get it...my son has a LizzyM of 69 - 70 and has not heard a peep...no interview, everything submitted...great EC's lots of volunteer work, shadowing doc's, worked at medical examiners office, tutoring students in the sciences, guess that Cornell education was a overkill...he should have gone to a SUNY and saved me a ton of $$. He also did not hear from any of the other SUNY's either...so we are all bewildered on what's going on. Just venting.
Congratulations to all that have been accepted...great news.

My parents feel the same way. I'm in a Similar situation.

Glad to know that we're not alone...have not seen much activity lately on people getting interview emails. Time will tell.

Ivy League/Top school applicants are a dime a dozen at many medical schools, including Stony.

I do think he should've at least heard back from some places by now. I do want to say, from everything I've learned, it's not about ECs so much as how meaningful they were and how effectively he's able to communucate that meaning (in writing) and to weave them into a cohesive narrative. Also, it's less about who he got LORs from and more about the quality of those LORs. Getting LORs doesn't mean much if they aren't strong. You also have no idea what's on his committee letter.

I'm not attacking you. I'm just offering up some possible explanations as to why he may not be getting responses. Hopefully you receive good news soon.

Completely agree with this.

IMO, the application should have somewhat of a "story". It's important that the applicant shows that they're passionate about something and that their ECs reflect that passion. Doing typical mundane ECs won't make a student stand out.

this might be sort of an obnoxious post but I'm getting a little panicky toward the end of this cycle..I just got wait listed here with a GPA of 3.825 and a new MCAT of 524; I have tons of service, 2.5 years of continuing research I've presented at 3 conferences, 100+ hours of shadowing in 5 different specialties and I'm in state (literally 10 min away from the school). I just have no idea what's going on, anyone have any insight they'd be willing to share?

If your application is absolutely perfect, then the only thing left would be your interview. Do you interview well?

You could be overqualified.. schools don't want to offer too many acceptances to those that they think would be offered and attend a "better" school. By waitlisting you, they can see if you continue to express interest in attending the school and this doesn't affect their matriculation rate.

When did you apply? How were your LORs? Interviews?

Don't panic! I'd imagine your cycle is going more than okay lol.

There's also LORs, which she can't be certain how good they are and weigh heavily on post interview decisions.

I am a little worried about one LOR in particular so I'm planning on asking my advisor whether he can tell me if he thinks that's the problem, but it's from a professor I'm still working with so I don't think he'd be the problem, definitely a possibility though.

All my secondaries were in 8/07 which is a little late, I know. I had done 2 interviews in the 2 days before this one so I was prepared and felt like it went really well, super relaxed and I got to talk about some of the stuff on my application I'm really passionate about and I think that came across. I definitely have a baby face, though, I'm 5'2" and 100 lbs and not planning on a gap year so I'm not sure if perceived immaturity might have hurt me?

Early august is fine lol.

Perceived immaturity would *certainly* hurt your candidacy. However, it's only relevant if that perception came across from the way you came across when you spoke or how you handled yourself, not the way you look. I really don't think any sensible interviewer would log you as immature based on your appearance.

Honestly, I'd only worry about trying to analyze this incident if it was one of many similar incidents. Unless you're getting rejected/waitlisted everywhere, I'd just consider this a matter of perhaps being perceived as overqualified, disinterested in the school, or they simply didn't think you were a good fit.

Sorry if this question was already asked, but has stony brook already sent rejections to people pre-interview?

My application has been "under consideration" per the portal since 9/21

rejected as well. really really upset because I really wanted to go to my state school. 🙁
Right there with you 🙁 I should've known since they ignored my secondary for months until I reminded them!

Hey, if it doesn't have a complete date on your portal, I would let them know immediately. I was in the same boat for a long time and it seemed they never completed my application.
