2015-2016 University of Kentucky Application Thread

By "financial aid", do you mean scholarships? I know they have a lot of scholarships available for academic performance, diversity, and financial need that you can apply for once you get accepted. I don't know the monetary value though. There's an additional scholarship available 3rd and 4th year for anyone with a GPA above a specific cutoff as well.

The full listing is available here, but it doesn't include monetary value: https://meded.med.uky.edu/medical-education-scholarships. If you look in the column on the right, there are links for "academic excellence", "academic excellence/financial need" and "specialty and criterion-based" scholarships. Hope that helps!
Yes, that helps a lot! Thank you

I was put on hold here and was told that they would re-look at on hold applicants in December/January. But I read on their website earlier today that they usually overfill the class by early January, which is scary to think about. I reaaaallly want to hear good news from this school!!

I am in the exact same position as you!! I was told by a close friend who currently goes to UKCOM that people don't usually start getting off holds until April or May when those who have multiple acceptances have to choose one school to attend, thus leaving spots open. Until then there won't be any available seats and all we can really do is sit tight and wait. I don't think that UK's Hold/Waitlists see much movement until the spring. They do encourage you to send updates esp in the form of new courses/grades though.

I interviewed at UK on 9/19 and I came back from my two interviews feeling great about it. I also have adequate enough grades/MCAT/ECs. This proves that the admissions are based off much more than just stats. Thank goodness that I've already gotten into 2 other medical schools including my current undergraduate institution 🙂. Nonetheless I wish you all the best! There will be light at the end of this tunnel :highfive:

Really??? Ugh, that's disappointing, I hate that I might be in the dark for that long... I may send an update, even though I got a B this semester, I've done more research this past semester than in the last year and a half and am planning on volunteering with a refugee ministry in the spring. I was only going to take 13 hours next semester, with classes just on MWF, but a few of my friends are taking a basic pharmacology course and I considered taking it just as an extra elective and for some additional exposure before med school. Do you think that would be a good idea? The only other classes I'm taking are research for credit (easy A), psyc statistics (another easy A), microbiology (probably will require a little effort) and a seminar on superheroes in pop culture (not sure how much work this will require).

I interviewed that day too! I also thought mine went well, my second interviewer was so enthusiastic and bubbly toward me. My GPA is really high but my MCAT (508) is a little under their average. I have an acceptance at my undergrad med school and I will be more than happy to go there, but UK really sold me when I was there, so I'd be really honored to receive an acceptance. Thanks so much, I wish the same to you.

Yeah I totally understand how you feel!! I have no clue what is going on either but I think annoying them with calls is futile. We just have to wait until there are more seats that open up. You should definitely send an update, I am sure they will want to see new grades and all your new activities. Don't let those go to waste, they sound wonderful! Well you don't have to take my word for it, but I certainly think that your pharmacology class will be useful. I am a senior at UofL(IS) and we also have a very easy pharmacology class that I am taking next spring. It looks good and it prepares you. I'm also taking Microbiology. All of this can't hurt to show the medical schools that you are still in limbo mode with. And don't feel as if your MCAT was not good enough, a 508 is more than enough for UK. It's probably something else for both us and not just simple stats. Perhaps how much we fit the school's mission? Who knows. Yes I was really impressed with UK too I felt the exact same way esp. when I went on their tour of the school and Chandler Hospital! Everybody is just so friendly and the entire school/system is incredibly well-organized and put together. Well you never know at end we may both hear from them in late April/May lol  But you know what they say, all it takes is just ONE medical school to become a doctor. So I feel grateful regardless. 🙂

We'll be in the same micro class, maybe for pharm too. Also a senior at UofL.

I just wanted to make my last semester as stress-free as possible but I think I should be able to handle the course load. Also, do we need to send them another official transcript after this semester's grades are in? And if so, how do we do that, just send it to the med school admissions address?

If you all are talking about BIOL 395 for pharmacology, the professor for that course is on UofL ADCOM fyi

Yeah but apparently everything is on tegrity so no one even goes to class except for the exams...

And what does RPLP stand for?

I'm also a senior at UofL who will be taking BIOL 395! Although I heard the exams were online. Maybe it's just wishful thinking.

Also, I know that we need to send an updated transcript and that we should send it to the school, so I would assume we would need to send it to admissions. Can anyone confirm?

Does anyone know how long after the committee meeting it normally takes before they make acceptance calls or send out emails?

For those of you who are on hold - are you just having an official transcript mailed to the admissions office? Their secondary doesn't have a mechanism for updates so I'm not sure how to submit my updated grades otherwise.

So for those who are on hold and/or wondering about updates, I emailed admissions this morning and this is the response I got back:

"We will be looking at the holds again in January and we be making some offers. Others will be continue to hold and we will build our alternate list from that. You can send in a pdf or a screen shot of your grades to [email protected]. We do not ask for official transcripts unless you are accepted. If you have any more questions or concerns, please let us know.

Jodi"

So hopefully we'll hear some good news in January!! It doesn't seem like they even require you to send an update of your grades unless you just want to....I got 2 A's and 2 B's this semester and without a decision made yet I wouldn't want it to reflect negatively on me to send it in...do you think I should? If I were to do that I would include other updates with regards to my extracurriculars. Or maybe I'll just wait until January and if I don't hear good news then I'll send an update lol.

Thank you for sharing the update!! 🙂

Wow thank you so much for sharing @toffee_bloom !! That was so helpful! This saves us a lot of trouble. Fingers crossed that we hear good news in January :xf: Yeah I honestly think that you should wait to send in the grade update because it won't hurt you if you do not but it may if you do. The flip side is if they don't really want to see updates on grades, then they probably aren't dying to see new extracurriculars either. I really think that they already have enough information on us to make an informed admissions decision. And lol if ur also a senior at UofL then chances are I probably know you or at least have seen you around in some of my classes hahaha

The committee was supposed to meet today... Has anyone heard anything?

Does anyone remember the what they said the schedule would be like for the first couple months? Seems like they said something about lecture being every morning until 12 but I don't remember how many days/hrs a week are spent in lab.

Lecture 8am-12pm Monday through Friday. Lab (ICM) once or twice per week (I forget which) from 1pm-3pm.

For first and second year, lecture is from 8am-noon. For our class, we had ICM once a week for two hours in the afternoon in first year. Since they plan on adding more physical exam skills into the first year curriculum, I don't know if it will be the same for class of 2020.

During Anatomy, which is the first block, we actually only had lecture 8-10am most days then anatomy lab from 10-noon. Again, not sure it will be the same for you guys. I know that at the second look being held in a couple of weeks they will fully describe the curriculum for next year. Hope that helps!

Does anyone know what day they will be re-reviewing holds?

Anyone go to the informational session yesterday? How was it, did they announce the tuition for class of 2020?

Has anyone heard anything since the first of the year?
I would be surprised if they had. Today was the first interview date of the new year and the adcom doesn't meet next Thursday, the 21st.

What's the amount of the typical merit scholarship UK gives?

Just now got an II off the pre-interview hold. OOS LM~70 do you guys think its still worth traveling out here for this? I may just be interviewing for the waitlist at this point... Also, is there anyway an OOS could switch in IS tuition after a year here?

You will almost without a doubt be interviewing for the wait list at this point. And there are very few things that can change your residency status once you're here. There are some posts about this earlier in the thread.

Hm... ya it looks like they are just about full in terms of seats and no interview spots available for at least a month :/ bummer given my particular situation I could have become a resident here after a year too.

There are currently still seats, but it's unlikely there will be any in a month. That being said, a good number of people in the class come from the waitlist. If you think there's any chance you'd attend UK over your current acceptances, you might still consider interviewing. You can't really tell if you like a school until you've spent time there in person.

The best ways to gain residency are if you have parents here or if you marry a KY resident. Otherwise, unfortunately, it's very unlikely you would be able to get in-state tuition.

Thanks for your response 🙂 Do you know if one could become a resident if their spouse becomes a resident?

I'm sorry to say that's not a guarantee. If you can show you moved here because your spouse got a job here, there's a good chance. However, if they determine that your spouse moved because you moved to come to med school, they reject it. I've heard both success stories and stories of failure on this one. Julie McDaniel, director of Financial Aid, may be a good person to ask about your specific situation since she's helped several people through applying for KY residency. PM me if you need her contact info.

Just got this:
"Thank you for your patience as we continue to review your application for admission to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. The Admissions Committee has recently reviewed the files of all candidates currently on hold. We are writing to advise you that the committee has decided to have your file remain in a Hold status. Files of candidates on hold will be reviewed again later in the spring."

Booooooo

So I just got an email telling me that I'm still on hold and that I'll be reviewed again later in the spring....SO specific. At this point I'm just planning to go for the other school I've been accepted to, which is why I've been apartment hunting!

I just received that same exact email. I'm excited for my other school options, however I was still holding out hope for UK. And toffee bloom, I am way too excited about apartment hunting.

From what I understand, they will review again later in the spring and use this hold status to make a waitlist from. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
