2015-2016 Wright State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you all completed a secondary application you would have received an email that told you your application was complete. Your status will not change unless invited for an interview. This means you are still in review and no final decision has been made. We do not do silent rejections. Those that did not get a secondary due to low MCAT and GPA were sent notice in early November. Those of you that do not end up being invited for an interview will receive email notice as soon as possible in late February or March. We do not have a specific date for the last invites that will go out or for the last day of interviews.

I hope this clears up your confusion.

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Is it safe to assume that if you weren't rejected for MCAT and/or gpa and have not received a secondary that you are still being screened for a secondary? I was complete and verified on 10/18.

A few questions that I didn't think to ask during my interview, but was hoping that maybe someone else was wise enough to ask, or if a current student knows, it would be very helpful and much appreciated 🙂

1. Are exams given as block exams (all at once every few months), or continuously over the course of a semester on a weekly basis?

2. Do - or can - instructors give pop quizzes?

3. Are written and/or practical exams cumulative? If so, in which classes are they cumulative?

4. What percentage of the lecturers are guest lecturers vs. on the staff?

5. What percentage of the lecturers are PhDs, and what percentage are physicians?

Thank you!!

1. Exams are given throughout the block. For instance, we are in Molecular Basis of Medicine (MBM) currently which runs 9 weeks. We have an exam every 3 weeks or so. It was in similar fashion for Human Structure. Throughout the two blocks we have clinical medicine (ICM) once a week and patient, physician, and society (PP&S) once a week during MBM. These classes have one or two exams throughout the block as well but aren't nearly as difficult or dense as the science courses.

2. I have yet to have had a pop quiz or heard of one administered here. There are sometimes a few clicker questions asked before a class but they would most likely don't count for points and they are announced regardless. I would say that the course directors are in theory probably allowed to give them out but again I've never heard of it happening.

3. Depending on the class, exams can be cumulative. Our MBM exams are cumulative and from my understanding they try to use the more high-yield board material for cumulative questions. I remember our human structure exams and practicals were cumulative as well.

4. At this point off the top of my head we have had one guest lecture during MBM where a genetics counselor came in during our genetics portion to talk about genetic testing. During Patient, physician, and society we have had a few lecturers that aren't really "guest" lecturers they are just professors in other departments on campus. For instance we had a few lectures from psychology from a professor in the psychology department. Really depends on the course.

5. To piggyback on question 4, it again depends on the class. Human Structure is taught by two professors that are PhD's however they really only run the anatomy courses for the medical school and for the anatomy graduate students. For MBM, the biochemistry portions are taught by PhDs except the genetics portion which is taught by Dr. Miller (an MD) who is a very renown geneticist from Dayton Children's hospital. The TBL portion of MBM is taught by two physicians, one being an MD/PhD. Clinical medicine is taught by an MD/PhD and all the small group preceptors are physicians. PP&S is ran by a physician and a PhD however some of the lecturers are PhD and some are physician. So it really depends on the class. Most of the sciences are going to be PhD however they usually do most of their teaching work with the medical school.

It could mean that you have missed an email or two, or are still being considered for a secondary if your scores are just slightly below the cut off and going through a secondary review. Call or email me so I can help you.

What is the cut off Ms. Debbie?

What is the cut off Ms. Debbie?
You need to have an MCAT score of 23 or 495 and a Science GPA of 3.0.

You need to have a Science GPA of 3.0 or above AND an MCAT score of 23 or 495 or above. For those just under those numbers you are undergoing a secondary review and as soon as possible you will be notified by receiving a secondary or being rejected. I do not know what day this will happen, but should be this month. If you want to call and double check please do so.

This is wonderful information Debbie. Thank you so much!

I have a question for you, you are being incredibly kind for doing this by the way. I turned in my secondary way back in July and was complete a couple days later. Is it safe to assume that since I haven't heard anything at this point, that I am out of the running, or do I still have a chance. Thanks for the time to answer this.

I am also in this boat! Would love for an interview invite here!!

It does not mean you are out of the running. You are still in active review and could receive an interview invitation anytime from now until the end of February. It is impossible to review over 4000 applications and invite everyone at once! Hang in there, we know it is a long process.

I know I have to keep telling myself that. Thank you very much for the time you took to answer to my neuroses.

Hello Debbie,

Thanks for the information. Can you please inbox me your information?

Email notifying me of the invite, but I had to call to schedule it. They interview Tuesdays and Wednesdays
Congrats! After you call could you post if you were able to get a January or February date? Thanks!

Hi! I'm new to SDN. I have been accepted to WSU! WooHoo! 🙂🙂🙂
I thought waiting for an acceptance would be the stressful part of this process but now I have to think about how I'm going to afford medical school. I live in Miami, FL so I would practically be moving cross-country, and to a completely different climate...so moving expenses, living expenses while we get situated, and warm winter clothes, etc. My biggest concern is that I have a young family to worry about...a spouse and 1 year old daughter. I have been scouring the Internet for information on how/ if it is possible to live off loans for the first year while my husband stays home with my daughter--since I feel strongly that she is too young to be in daycare all day. I'm just seeking some helpful advice. I know I will have to take out loans but I have read that there is a limit to how much you can borrow, and that limit is calculated as the cost of attendance for only the student--not dependents. I have an appointment to speak with the financial advisor, but I just want to get some ideas on what to ask about and such. So are there any students with families that made it or can tell me their experience? Thanks in advance.

Hello, Debbie!
I was wondering how many acceptances there have been so far and how many seats are therefore left available in the 2016 entering class. Thank you for taking the time and effort to post often on this board and answer questions!

Any idea of when scholarships will come out?

I think they mentioned sometime around March/April they will send them out?

Before the deadline to choose a school.

We don't release numbers. We are still interviewing for seats in the class, not waitlist seats if that's what you are checking on. We will make interview invitations through February and have always made offers up through the end of interviewing.

No one let me sing at my interview..

I think scholarships come at the end of the cycle, at least that is what I remember from interview day. I interviewed here in November and was accepted in December. Was impressed by the tight-knit community at Boonshoft and the top-notch facilities of the med school! The interviewers were very conversational and one of my interviewers even made me sing; it was fun. Would be willing to answer anyone's questions if desired. I am an Ohio resident with LizzyM of ~67.

I interviewed the first week of December and we were supposed to hear back the first week of January but I haven't heard anything. Should I be worried?

This is why I love this school.
Yeah I sang in an a cappella group in college and the person I interviewed with had me sing something impromptu, was hilarious. Other interviews have been dry, but that one was definitely not haha. Very memorable.

It's been a ghost town here for IIs. My stats are a little high for the average, but would really love to go here for a variety of reasons. I wish they allowed updates

Same. I wonder if they're done sending invites for this season, it seems to be getting late.

I was also accepted this evening! Interviewed Jan 6 as well.

II here last night! Any words of advice? Also, does anyone know if there are seats still available in the class, or are we interviewing for wait list seats? So excited!
