The cost of attendance is astronomical. How do people pay of 300,000+ of debt??

Rejected from here today. I was hopeful, but I'm happy not to be a part of a school that doesn't want me. Onto the future.

Good luck to those on the waitlist!

I would look at the average indebtedness on MSAR which is 160k I believe. It's still not low but it seems many students are able to get by without ending up 300k in the hole.

I know I won't be able to attend if there is no help.

I disagree, both my faculty interview and student interviewers grilled me and had a list of questions they read from. And they were very very traditional questions, almost the kind that required memorized answers, like 'how do you resolve conflict,' 'what's a time you were annoyed,' etc.

I had nearly the exact same experience. I was even told at one point that my interviewer was required to ask these questions and then we would 'move on.' Well, it seemed we never moved on and the entire interview consisted of scripted questions and then my answer. Sometimes I was even interrupted to get to the next question. I was pretty bummed that it wasn't conversational like I was expecting.

But I think average indebtedness takes into account those who have the resources to pay the tuition in full, which skews the results. I feel like its a 2-peak distribution, which low lows and high highs.

Damn, does it? For example I think UTSW has an average of 120-130k and their tuition is under 20k. I'd think a lot more people would be able to pay for it out of pocket and that the amount would be lower if that were the case (them being included).

You may be right but it would make sense to me to only average those receiving aid.

Does anyone know how many applicants end up on the waitlist? Like how many students are outright accepted vs. waitlisted vs. rejected? I'm just wondering because this is my top choice school, and I was put on the alternative list and am trying to figure out my chances.

Unlike some certain other schools (here's looking at you, WashU), Case does reject people and if you are on the alternate list you do still have a chance. A friend of mine had this happen and periodically emailed the office to express their continued interest. They got in near the end of the cycle.. so it's not impossible, but do tell them how much you want to be here. The office does take it into account.

EDIT: Also, my guess is that an "alternate list" early on is much less of a concern than one near the end.

My impression is that this is likely true. I know that my debt will be in the upper range (certainly above what that number is). There are also people who, I assume, are capable of paying outright for everything (or at least have minimal loans). It is also unclear how exactly these numbers are calculated (I think the school provides it to AMCAS/AAMC), so I would take it all with a grain of salt.

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but would it be inappropriate to send a letter of intent post-interview, but before a decision has been released?

Why did the students who choose this as their top or go here choose this school?

if it makes you feel any better i got rejected the day before you, we must have been in the same batch.

I picked over Dartmouth (similar rankings), and choose it because of the resources available (particularly clinical training is better than DHMC in my opinion; also have Cleveland Clinic close-by), as well as being in a bigger location and the amenities all of that brings. Also, a better scholarship.

Was this where you had to write essays for the scholarship? Do you have to write the essays every year continuing?

Are all the essays the same? Like for each of the scholarship types?

This was an entrance scholarship - there's an application (I don't recall the details). If I remember correctly, they tell you after you get accepted whether you will be considered (and to put in the application).
Anyway - once you've received an award, it is usually for all 4 years, as long as you satisfy the conditions (e.g. only have to remediate something once, do well in Step exams, etc.)

CWRU SOM M3 here. Had to reply since I too chose case over Dartmouth, which had actually offered me a better scholarship. CWRU offers a variety of clinical sites with little competition for rotations, and the 4-months of protected research time is useful to crank out some research and also catch up on life things. Not to mention the fact that we have a LOT of free time in our pre-clinical years (bearintraining, make sure you enjoy it!).

My biggest reason for choosing CWRU however was the non-competitive, collaborative atmosphere. Med school is hard, but way more manageable when you're with a supportive group of peers. I just really think the vast majority of CWRU med students are pleasant people to be around- this was the case for me when I was an M1, and still is today.

Anyone on hold who sent an update have their portal actually show they received it? I'm not sure if it's just a system flaw / office still processing / or my file just disappeared haha

Has anyone accepted in November received a hard copy acceptance letter and if so did it include an invitation to apply for scholarships?

I just received my hard copy acceptance in the mail today after acceptance on 11/5. It included the scholarship invitation, but my portal already had the same exact invitation.

Was the invitation to apply for scholarships immediately on your portal after acceptance? I was accepted last week, but I haven't heard anything about this... Definitely not trying to go into 24ok of debt!

On my acceptance portal, under "Acceptance Messages" I could click on Scholarship Information, where it informed me that I could apply for scholarships in March 2017.

I'm not sure if anyone else is experiencing two different layouts -- one with the green and pink University and College program boxes side by side, and one with separate tabs for each program and no colored boxes -- but I could only find the scholarship info on the tabs layout.

I have yet to see another layout besides the two halves with colored boxes. However, in my physical letter I did get the offer to apply for scholarships, but can't find that info anywhere on my portal, so if anyone else that's accepted hasn't seen anything about scholarships don't worry yet!

Were you accepted in October, because I don't have the info on the portal, just in my physical letter. Maybe they chose to start updating portals later on? Just a guess...

I was accepted on october too and only got the scholarship invitation in my physical letter.

Nope, the first November batch

When I first log in I only ever see the colored box layout. But I have the page saved as a bookmark and if I click on the bookmark again after I'm already logged in it will change to the tabs layout. No clue why or when I started doing that, but I like the tabs layout better. As far as I can tell the only other extra info is something about obtaining your CaseID which requires info we don't have yet

How sure are most people about attending Case? I'm just curious. For me, I think the second look weekend and financial aid will be the deciding factors.

But fit wise, I fell in love.

This, exactly. I'm really really hoping the money side of things works out, because otherwise I really loved this place. Excited to see you all at second look!
