2016-2017 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

Hey what's the interview like here? For some reason I have this idea that it is very intense...

I talked to my faculty interviewer about art for 15 minutes then he said "oh I should probably actually interview you now huh?" and then my student interviewer just asked about two of my activities that she was interested in hearing more about. Both chill, both too short given interesting and relaxed discussions.

can you elaborate on what made it intense? and how you prepared for it?

Mostly getting grilled with question after question and receiving virtually no non-verbal feedback from the interviewer. I used the word relative because it was so much different than my earlier interview that day, which was super relaxed and conversational.

I prepared by making sure I did not get flustered or frustrated during mock interviews. Also made sure when I practiced that my facial expression didn't show whether I was frustrated, flustered or extremely nervous. I left out of the interview feeling like I bombed it. First time I've felt that way.

To clarify, my student interviewer did ask one difficult question which was "what words or phrases would your friends use to describe you?"

Hello Darmouth you are my friend
I've come to call on you again
I'm patiently waiting here for a II
You see to be a doctor I need that II
So the "sound of silence ..."😢

I had a very similar experience with my first interview. I left feeling like it went mediocre at best. I was so frequently interrupted and challenged that that I didn't get to complete my responses before moving on the the next question. In retrospect, I wish I'd been more forceful in following up and finishing my point.

The second interview was completely different and, I believe, could not have gone any better. It was a very warm, friendly conversation about my interests, experiences and values. We lost track of time and went a bit over the scheduled 1/2 hour. I felt like we could have talked for hours and was genuinely disappointed that we had to stop so soon.

Same exact experience here with my first interview being quite mediocre and the second interview feeling as though it couldn't have been more perfect! Definitely not banking on an acceptance for myself based on the divide...

Aye congrats! I feel like we've been interviewing at the same schools lol! All the best.

I got an invitation to apply from the school based on my MCAT (88th percentile), but I have a sub 3.0 GPA after 3 undergraduate degrees (with mostly upward trend). Every other part of my application should be very, very strong. Also a URM, veteran, and obviously non-trad.

Would it be foolish to even apply here? That $130 fee has been holding me back for months now. Not in the business of wasting time and money... Thoughts?

A note on the "invitation to apply" - most schools send those emails out pretty liberally and should not really be taken as an indicator for interest.

With a sub 3.0 GPA I think it would be very difficult to get into any allopathic MD school, but since you are URM + non-trad, if you can write a compelling story I think you could have a chance of beating the statistics.

That being said, it is VERY late to be applying to MD schools. I'm not sure how much this will affect your chances but it certainly isn't favorable. In my opinion, this whole process is kind of a gamble on wasting time and money haha 🙂 Apply if you feel that you match the school's missions (ASAP), but be aware that your late application may preclude your already slim chances. The whole process is random, though, so you may or may not find yourself getting lucky ~ Wishing you the best of luck!

for people who arrived in Hanover the night before the interview date, do you guys have any restaurant recommendations for dinner? this will be my first time there. 😀

I went to Molly's one night, which has a huge menu of a mix of type of cuisines, and was impressed! Fun atmosphere and good service. I also got Thai take out, which was delicious, from Tuk Tuk Thai.

Also went to Molly's. It was average.

Apply. NOW. I don't think your GPA will hold you back as much as you think and you will never know if you don't try! Best of luck!

Can anyone talk about what interview day was like? What individual interviews were like with faculty/students etc.?

Jesse's is great. Owned by the same group as Molly's but a little bit better done/more extensive menu. This is the place all the pres. candidates go when they visit our area in NH. If you have a car and can travel to Lebanon, Lui Luis is also pretty great.

Its my hometown and I would def chose Jesse's over Molly's

When I was there for my interview I tried some place called Everything But anchovies at the recommendation of a local and the hostess woman was the sweetest individual ever. She talked to us about our apps and gave us a bag of free homemade cookies. Chicken sandwich was also phenomenal.

.

And one of my interviewers was notoriously tough - I didn't walk away confident at all! Just be yourselves and have fun with it! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

How did they let you know? I interviewed 10/6 too. Was it an email?

I interviewed on their 1st interview day (sometime mid September) but have heard nothing back since. Wondering whether the silence means rejection or a SUC kinda thing.... anyone have an idea?

At my interview they said that we shouldn't be surprised if we don't hear back until April. They rank all candidates and those that aren't at the very top or the very bottom have to wait to see where the cut off is (AKA it's truly not rolling admissions).

What did you like about the school?

Well here is my unsolicted opinion:

I liked how small the school was. Felt like it would be a really supportive community to be a part of. Their MD admission/education team seemed really helpful.
On the flipside, although the town/campus is beautiful, I didn't like how small Hanover was. I felt like I (or my partner) might go crazy in that small and isolated of a town. However, I definitely prefer big cities so it might be just the thing for you. Like I said, it's a beautiful area.
The hospital was also nice, but I worry about the diversity of patients who you will encounter.
I liked that they had a Medical Education Scholars program.
Overall, I liked it a lot but I wasn't ~in love~ with it

Anyone know if Geisel is receptive to in the area updates/interviews?
