2016-2017 Indiana University Application Thread

sorry everyone- one more question: can the dean of students evaluation and the legal disclosure be scanned and e-mailed? Or do these need to be physically mailed?

<3 you all

"When it comes to the original signatures. Your signature can be a copy at the top of the form. Any part of the form the dean of students from your undergraduate school fills out needs to be mailed and sent in original format." -Lenesha Stone

(I asked a question similar to yours and she replied with this)

Thanks for the reply! Have you interviewed yet? I'm just not used to the non-paperless submissions.

does the location of your interview determine where you will be attending if accepted?

was holding an acceptance here for a while because of its proximity to my sibling. I was wondering what people liked and disliked about this school. Getting double minded, and I will withdraw from here and offer a spot if I'm not truly satisfied with this.

Can't speak for IUSM yet, but I will be starting in August and I am super excited. I went to IU for undergrad and it was a great school, but like anything, it was what I made it. I personally feel that if you go into it thinking, "What can I add to this community?" Instead of, "What will this community do for me?" You will always come out ahead and more satisfied. I am not presuming that you do not already go about it this way, just my 2 cents if you will.

For interview day where did you guys get a 3x5 photo of yourself? Kinkos? And anyone know what the Gary campus is like? That's where my interview is.

I literally printed mine at home from my printer on regular printer paper, and cut it crudely with scissors. No one said anything about it, it's just so they have a face to put with the name.

Don't stress out too much about this, it really doesn't matter. Do whatever you feel comfortable with.

Was there a place to leave your luggage for the day for those who interviewed in Indianapolis?

Anyone have details on how campus selection works? Do you get preference if accepted early on?

If you did EDP then you get to choose which campus you are at and are guaranteed it. Otherwise, you rank the campuses and are put into a lottery and your campus is chosen for you. More than likely you'll get one of your top 3 but its not guaranteed. Later on they'll also do a second-chance lottery if you're unhappy with the first option.

I have heard that the earlier you make your selection the better your chances. So if you saved your campus preference in DEC and haven't changed it, then you should have a better chance then someone who saves their campus preference in FEB. So it's all based off when you press that save button and your actual campus preference ranking. I have absolutely no evidence to prove that this is true. Just something I've heard and seems sensible. Or so I tell myself...

Anyone have recommendations for things to check out near downtown indianapolis?

I hear the canal is nice! I have an interview tomorrow so I think I'll check that out today if the weather isnt too bad. I saw online there is a lot of museums and other parks as well.

Shapiro's. Best Reuben I have ever had in my entire life. St Elmo's is also a great place for steak and, surprisingly, shrimp cocktail. That cocktail sauce is a dream.

I did some searching through the IUSM threads of past years, but I'm sorry if this question has been asked a million times. Does anyone know if IUSM accepts letters of intent for applicants still under review, and if so, do they carry any weight? IU is definitely my top choice and I want them to know!

+1 interested in this.

Also, how do we send thank you notes? Physical mail?

You can probably just email them to the adcom. FWIW, I didn't and was accepted.

Thanks for the reply 🙂 what was your impression of the school btw? I interviewed recently and I really liked it, other than mandatory lectures.

Question for anyone who can help. I am currently "under consideration" after interviewing. Is there a way to send additional letters of recommendation for consideration? It would be from a physician who works with IUSOM and medical students, so I figure it'd be at least of some value.

How long after interviews does it take for this school to get back to us usually?

Depends. They send out acceptances the 15th of every month until June. After that they make the waitlist.

So you could either be accepted or you won't hear until June.

Last year, they sent out acceptances until March, made the waitlist in May, and started accepting off the waitlist in June.

I am confused about the dean of students evaluation, I graduated last spring. Am I really supposed to find the dean of my school and ask him to sign that form than physically mail it in?

I just called the dean's office at my school and then forwarded it to their email and told them where to send it.

When do they typically send post interview rejections?

Post-interview usually aren't sent until May either, unless they're really sure you won't be accepted... usually, if there's an IA or some other red flag they decided wasn't okay.

Trying not to lose hope I'll be accepted. Interviewed all the way back in September and still have heard nothing

I interviewed in October and am in the same boat... It's getting harder to stay positive. Sending good vibes both of our ways for this round of acceptances!

Congrats! That's awesome.
This might be a dumb question, but is the IUB undergrad One.IU.edu application status portal different from the application portal those of us that don't attend IU for undergrad have to look at our application status? They don't typically update portals so quickly!

Congrats! 🙂

I also go to IU, but when I tried looking for the application status on one.iu.edu, it didn't show my med school application status, and says "Apply for admission" instead. Hopefully, I'm not looking in the right place?

Thank you so much, and yes, it's different! I'm fairly sure it's only a portal IU undergrads or grad students have access to.

Congrats! 🙂

Thanks 🙂 If you go to one.iu.edu, and search "Application Status," mine used to read something along the lines of "to check the status of your Medical School application, visit admissions.iusm.iu.edu," but it now reads "Congratulations, you have been admitted. You will receive a formal letter of admission in the mail, with information on your next steps." I hope that helps!

Did you have "in Process" as the status before that on the portal. Does this mean app hasn't been "considered" this round?

Mine changed to under consideration a couple weeks ago.
So I would expect maybe yours hasn't been reviewed yet?

I think "in Process" means that there is something missing from your application. Either you haven't interviewed yet (which I presume is not the case) or they are missing one of: legal disclosure, dean of students evaluation, letter of recommendation. You might call to double check, though.

Yeah I was missing those forms after my interview so my portal says in process as well. Just mailed them though!

Hmmm. Interesting. All the items on the list are checked with a green check mark. All the red has been gone for a few weeks. ‍♀️. Hopefully there's movement soon.
