2016-2017 Oakland University (Beaumont) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just put on hold for re-review, complete 6/28, OOS

Sorry to hear it! Looks like you are doing OK in general though 🙂

Thank you! I've been pleasantly surprised with the feedback from schools so far. It's not a rejection so I won't lose hope just yet! Congrats on your 6 interviews 🙂

All I have under "status" is a green checkmark next to "application file complete".
Were any of you changed to "under review"?

How do you determine what is significant enough to warrant adding an update to your portal? I took a class this summer and did some additional volunteer work, which doesn't seem significant enough to me, but the course was one of the prerequisites, so I am torn. Any thoughts?

I'd definitely update them about the course, especially if it's a prerequisite. Just my two cents.

Do you guys think spending a day volunteering for an OUWB student run event (it was a free health screening clinic in an underserved area) warrants a short update letter? I did BP screenings, height/weight, counseling people on how to lower BP and it was put on by 3-4 OUWB students that received a grant from the medical school. I want them to know about it, but idk if it's "big" enough to put in an update letter.

I disagree. You won't be rejected from a school for missing a prerequisite. Of course, you are expected to take it before matriculation. Additional volunteer work is something that you should talk about in an interview - the committee, I doubt would reconsider your application upon receiving these updates.

Thank you both! I am eager to hear back from OUWB, but I don't want to waste their time with an unnecessary update. I appreciate the thoughts 😀

Any advice on what to do with a repeated course? I re-took a D and got an A, should I just use the average which is how AMCAS does it?

are you talking about entering in the prerequisites? I forget what those look like on the supplemental..

Yeah since they only give you two boxes for chem (1 each for chem 1 and chem 2). I just ended up putting in the A with my re-take lol

I would just put the retake, that's what I did for a repeat course. Since they have you put the date in they know what attempt you are listing

Is anyone here a current student or from the area? I am wondering where most OUWB students live- would like to try and drive through on interview day 🙂

You'd be surprised that quite a few OUWB students actually live at home, from what I know. It's right in the middle of a really suburban area so most metro-Detroiters are in driving distance. I just asked my bff who is a 3rd year what the name of the main apt complex is, it's right down Adams near the school.

I know of 4-5 people in my class who live at home, but my class has relatively few Michiganders. I will say most of the people who can live at home choose to do so, but there are not a ton who live close enough. I'm not familiar with the apartment complex down Adams...do you know what it's called? It might just be that very few people in my class live there.

Popular apartment complexes for M1/M2: Westbury Village in Auburn Hills down Squirrel, Beacon Hill & Boulevard right across Walton from the university, Walton Pond in Pontiac. A handful of people live in other (typically more expensive) complexes or own homes closer to the hospital.

For M3/M4, most people move down to Royal Oak, Birmingham, etc. to be closer to the hospital.
She said it's called River Oak! I know her first year class had lots of kids living there, but obviously you know better than me!

Which airport do people usually use if they're OOS? I think the closest one I found was in Flint 🙁

Yeah, air travel to OUWB is not super convenient TBH. DTW is probably your best bet in terms of proximity, cost, and flight availability. It's almost an hour cab/uber to OU when I go back and forth to the airport, but maybe I'm catching some traffic or driving slower than everyone else lol. I know a lot of people found other interviewees on SDN getting in at the same time and split the fare.

ETA: Traffic can be awful getting back and forth from DTW during rush hour...avoid if possible or give yourself plenty of extra time.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I was naive and went by Google map for the distance and time and booked a flight for Flint already :/. Question though- do OUWB students allow to host for 2 nights or 1 night only? I'm making Airbnb plans in case I can only stay for one night.

Flint will be fine! You'll be alright. Might avoid some traffic that way as well.

For hosting, I'm not sure whether there is a specific policy in place about staying 2 nights, I think it's just that it might be difficult to find students who can host for more than one night due to studying, having other plans, traveling on weekends, etc. I'd have a backup ready, but definitely don't hesitate to reach out to the hosting people and see if they can accommodate you - doesn't hurt to ask!
great, thanks!!

Just rejected. First rejection of the cycle and it was my top choice.. What a bad feeling

I hear that for this school you need family affiliation with Oakland in some form. Has anyone heard this?
