2016-2017 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was just wondering if anyone could describe the vibe they felt there ya know? But if it hasn't changed then last years thread should hold a lot of info! Thank you!
Yeah it hasn't changed from what I've heard. I interviewed last month and it was a great experience. The staff was really friendly and I got the sense they genuinely wanted us to do well on the interview. Best of luck!

What days does Carver usually send invites out on?

Wat are you guys considering a "low" mcat? This is sdn so I'm assuming you mean anything below 509+? Or do you mean 4XX low?

I'm talking about low 500's. Like 503 and under.

Did anyone else receive an email from the admissions director the same day as getting the secondary advising you to complete the secondary as soon as possible? Maybe because I'm late in the game?

If you're interested in the school just throw in your app. Aside from a little bit of money, what do you have to lose if you like the school?

Probably the first time you've ever seen a current applicant encourage people to apply. I must be crazy! =]

"very brief description of medically related experiences "

does this include research experience?

I think it would count if it was clinical research (e.g. you interacted w/ patients). I didn't list my research since it wasn't clinical.

I had my interview today. For anyone with an interview in the future, do your best to not stress! It's seriously so enjoyable. Everyone from the students to the interviewers really went above and beyond to make us comfortable. Hoping for some IS love now! 🙂

Happy you had a good experience.

Your interview is probably too late to hear back on day one, but for people who interviewed a few weeks ago . . . it is possible!

Our group was told we likely wouldn't hear anything until Thanksgiving. Hoping for the best! I would love to be a Hawkeye!

It could always be earlier though.

When I interviewed I was told no sooner than six weeks, but heard back in four!

What a treat that would be! Thinking back I was so impressed with everything. What an awesome school!

So I interviewed very early. Do we know if they will be sending out rejections right away or will I only hear if it's a yes?

I've never heard of an outright rejection this early. You'll either be accepted at some point during the rolling phase (which lasts until late January) or final-pooled (in late January). It can be a long or short wait.

Historically they've sent out rolling acceptances on Tuesdays. If that's still the case, we'll see the first round of acceptances go out on 10/18.

I remember them releasing acceptances on the first day allowed last year, but I also remember them saying during my interview this year (9/19) that the way the admissions committee meetings are set up this year, we shouldn't bank on hearing from them until 6 weeks later at the earliest. But I think there's a chance people will hear back on the 17th!

I interviewed around when you did (last year) and was told the exact same thing - I believed it until I got the email on 10/15 . . .

Granted, if you are pooled, then it is a very protracted process.

Hi everyone, M1 student here. I had a conversation with someone from admissions this week and they told me that they would be sending out first round of acceptances either on the 17th or 18th so keep your eyes open! Don't lose hope if you just interviewed, last year I got my acceptance a week and a half after interviewing but admittedly I attended the Diversity day interview day so that could have had something to do with it. Good luck!

Do you think that was to your advantage? It is later in the cycle so I opted to interview sooner and declined the later diversity day interview.

Has anyone noticed anything on their portal or called to ask about whether or not there's a possibility of hearing today? Shakin' in my boots! 😉

I haven't heard anything, or seen anything different in my portal either! The suspense is killing me!

They usually release acceptance decisions around 3 PM CST or shortly thereafter. C'mon, Carver!

Gingy I'm pulling for you today/tomorrow! Im pulling for all of you guys really!

They are interviewing today, so that could delay things? Last year I got my decision email at 8 am on 10/15 - but things could be different? I would ask @EleanorAbernathyMD, they know everything.

How far do you think playing a college sport goes as far as ec's
I was a student athlete in college- I had my head coach write one of my letters. I got an interview here... so I'd like to think it helps!

However, I wouldn't have your coach write your letter unless you are confident they write well. Best of luck to you!

Hey y'all. I know the nerves are in full swing, but Iowa is pretty consistent in releasing their acceptances on Tuesdays (I received mine around 3pm central time). Someone who contacted admissions previously was told to expect news on the 18th I believe. As @Cawolf said, they have interviews on Mon/wed/fri so they are rather busy today. Good luck, I hope good news is on its way to you tomorrow!

3.85gpa and 506 mcat, worth applying here as an OOS?

If you have the ECs and personality to back it up, then yes. Nearly 1/3 of our class is OOS.

Out of curiosity, how many IS acceptances are handed out on average? I'd assume not much more than 100 but I'm curious.

For those of you who have had an interview, it's one session with two interviewers for 25 minutes total, correct? It just seems like a very short time to me

Correct, it goes quickly especially because it's a blind interview. But at least they're friendly and not out to get you!
