2016-2017 University of Texas HSC at Houston (McGovern) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I got a II today! Around 2 P.M (Eastern), but I wasn't able to get to the computer today. They originally had scheduled it for the time when I was going to be in Australia, but I managed to push it up! Super stoked and totally didn't think they were ever going to get back to me!

Forgive me if this question has been answered already. I am an OOS applicant, interviewed 11/11, and I am wondering if anyone knows how Texas schools go about handing out OOS acceptances? They explained the unique way they deal with IS applicants, but I'm wondering if they simply do rolling admission for OOS? Thanks to anyone who can clarify.

Yes, they're rolling, any time after October 15.

Thanks!!! And I have no idea. I think I'm probably towards the end of the interview season, since they finish up the first week of January.
Stats don't determine everything though. I'm competitive stat wise for San Antonio, and it's been nada from them :/ I think schools just have really weird ways of determining who they interview, which can be infuriating! Good luck!

Are there any clinical clerkships/ electives at MD Anderson available for students?

So I guess I didn't end up getting an interview here. I'm glad I've had what I've had, but I just can't help but feel disappointed despite having the numbers and statistics here. I guess we can only connect the dots looking back, not forwards...

Do you think that there has been no prematches this month or do you think people that did receive a prematch this month do not use this forum?

Really no way to know! Enjoy your holidays and be sure to enter your rankings, for places where you have interviewed, on TMSDAS by Jan 20 and you will have done everything you have control over.

OOS and interviewed Oct 14. Complete silence. 🙁🙁🙁

Hopefully they let us OOsers know soon... I don't think there has been any OOS acceptance activity in this entire thread.

Second that. Really hoping we don't have to wait until February or March to know something

Everyone, I need your help. I interviewed at both here and Southwestern and I was equally impressed with both. The clinicals, preclinical, and everything amazed me. I received a prematch offer from here, but not from Southwestern. I see the rankings and how everyone always says Southwestern should always be taken first. Is there anyone who picked McGovern over Southwestern? What reasons should I do this for the match rankings? Location is not a factor between the 2 for me. Thank you!!

If SW is your top choice, put it as first. At least then you have a shot of getting matched there, and if you don't, you can still keep your prematch to Mcgovern. They are both great schools though, you could contact each of them to see if you could come back for a second look.

It also depends on your plans: if you are planning an academic career or a very competitive specialty you should lean UTSW for national reputation.

"National reputation" means virtually nothing, especially when both schools in question are top 50 anyways. This is what I've repeatedly heard from med students, including people at top 20 schools. A high step 1 score and research are going to make you competitive for specialties, not your school rank.

I would say what most people say, choose whichever school you think you will be happiest at, which may vary depending on location, curriculum etc.

With all due respect- I have been in academic medicine in Texas for over 30 years. There is no question that fit is important, but two students of similar profiles applying for residencies are definitely evaluated within the context of the strength of their institutions.

Thanks everyone. Ultimately I'm grateful just to be in this position since I recognize many people have no prematch offers or no interviews! This insight helped a lot for my decision. I'll let y'all know what happens!

In a hypothetical situation where two applicants had the exact same stats, I'm sure their school rank/reputation may become a deciding factor, but obviously that is rarely the case. My understanding from talking with a large variety of people is that just like when applying to med school there is a list of things that are important and some are more influential than others. School reputation (with obvious exceptions) is pretty low on the list and ultimately it will be your step 1 score, research experience and LOEs that determine your competitiveness as an applicant.

This is certainly something I was confused about at the start of this process, but the idea that you need to go to a top ranked med school to get into a competitive specialty is clearly incorrect.

Well it seems in your vast experience as a premed you have acquired knowledge that is more accurate than that of an experienced academic physician. Of course it's not the most important factor, but to think that it's not A factor especially for competitive residency spots is absurd.

A great article below, but there are many more for anyone who is interested.

I'm not going to get into personal attacks, just trying to make sure people don't get bad advice, there is plenty of that on SDN as it is. It's an important question and I'm in the same boat as the OP, so I understand it's kind of confusing too.

Does anyone know when to expect OOS acceptances? Or by now can we only be hopeful for waitlist? Curious as to how many out of staters are on this thread since we haven't heard much lately

+1 I interviewed OOS early October. Would definitely like some light shed on the general OOS timeline.

I'm also OOS. Interviewed Nov 11 and no word yet. I wonder if they'll wait until after the match to send out OOS acceptances. Since they accept so few OOS they might take their time making those decisions. I called the other day and they said if you interviewed you are automatically on the waitlist, and they would inform you of that after the match. Does anyone know if they put IS and OOS on the same waitlist? Or if the waitlist is ranked or not?

So my interview here was amazing!! Considering ranking this school first, even though it would mean 4-5 hours drive from home. You can't beat the TMC imo. BTW: as match day approaches, is there one single thread that everyone is going to post their rankings and if they got in or not? I don't know if previous years do that or if they just comment on the individual threads only.

Usually you will post on each school's page, but after match we will start up a TMDSAS wait list page.

Have any pre-matched ppl received scholarships yet?
