2017-2018 Duke University

Legit just submitted my secondary 25 min before the deadline. Not that I think I'll get an interview so late in the cycle, but I just never felt a sense of closure after abandoning it 3 months ago. It was definitely a character building experience if nothing else (finish what you start) and I feel better than I have in a long time. Good luck to everyone else who was actually responsible and submitted in a timely manner! XD

+1, but maybe 6-7 hours before the deadline. Let us see! GL to all.

Does Duke accept updates about new jobs/ volunteer positions? On the portal it seems like they do, but in their email it seems like they don't..

So Duke has sent out rejections but nobody posted here - saw in the "Rejections 2017 2018 thread"

Is Duke basically done sending out IIs? Their website is confusing and implies that interview invitations are sent out until Nov 15:

July 1 to November 15 (11:59 PM EST):
  • Duke receives DukeMed Applications*
  • Two Duke faculty members review applications
  • Qualified applicants are invited to interview with Duke
Second Monday in September to February 15:
  • Interview season**

How long is the tour - does it actually take the full 2 hours?
Although we had that much time for the tour, our student tour guide said upfront we didn't have to walk around for the full 2 hours; in other words, we could chill and ask him questions. Ours took a little longer (1.5 hr) because some ppl wanted to go inside the Duke Chapel.

I think they just mean that November 15 is when the secondary applications are due

I dont believe that is the case. 11/15 was the last date to receive applications. But I can see why it is confusing...they have kind of lumped it all under the same header. However, if they allow applications to be submitted until 11/15, then obviously they will extend IIs beyond that date.

Is it a big deal if I am unable to attend the gathering the night before the interview?

Does anyone know if they drop the lowest score from your MMI? Keep cringing thinking about one of my answers in particular...

I think I heard that they drop the highest and lowest scores, but I may be wrong.

They drop the lowest and highest score as told by a student

Has anyone received an II recently? I just got my 2° submitted in late October, but I haven't heard anything yet.

Any tips for MMI prep? This will be my first one. Reading through medical ethics websites in the meantime as a precaution even though I know not every scenario will be medical in nature. Is it conversational in nature, and if so should I talk for a few minutes and then allow ample time for follow-up discussion?

If I could give any advice, I would suggest improv because you'll be expected to think on your feet about something you might not have considered before. Getting broad exposure to many ethical situations may help, but that can be exhausting. Between interviewing at NYU and Duke, I thought having an ability to confidently take a stance on something that may seem new and defend your reasoning was, for me, the most important part in doing well in MMI. Although I don't have an acceptance from either NYU or Duke (too early for those who aren't familiar with their timeline), I did get really good feedback from my interviewers while interviewing, so I hope this advice helps you.

Are you allowed to bring pen and paper to jot down thoughts before you enter the room?

Welp just interviewed and pretty sure I bombed that MMI. Duke seems like a good school though and was a reach anyway, but best of luck to the rest of you.

So has duke been rejecting along the way or are they a more of a "day of reckoning" type of school?

Some people have been rejected along the way but only through portal so far I believe.

Any thoughts about why you bombed it? I think its incredibly difficult to say how you did in MMIs

how do you know this? so they reject through portal without sending email? seems odd.

I’ve only seen one person report a rejection on the rejection thread - I’m wondering if it was an MD-PhD rejection as I have seen multiple rejections on those threads, but no one has reported one here.

I finished this secondary pretty late (mid October). Anyone have any idea roughly when I can expect to hear back?

No idea - I'm wondering the same. I finished the secondary a week or so after you.

You’ll either get an interview some time between now and February or you’ll be rejected in March. Most of us are just biding our time while waiting. They don’t necessarily review the applications in order, and even when they decide to give an applicant an interview, they may not send it until later in the season. So there’s no way to predict when you’ll hear back. Good luck!

I saw that too and I thought I saw people posting it in the MD rejection thread on the pre-MD board and/or past school threads. I could be mistaken so my apologies if so.

I just don't think I did well on certain stations and my timing was off for a few. I don't want to say too much but there were a couple stations more traditional in nature and I don't understand how you can convincingly do that in the time limit they give with no preparation or previous MMI experience (which I didn't have). Maybe I should have practiced my timing more going in. Considering the low post-interview acceptance rate and my relatively lower stats I would have to kill the interview to boost my app in the committee pile.

you may not have done as bad as you think. just be positive and wait and see what happens. that's all we can do. best of luck

They had the best lunch out of all the places I've been to.

Agreed. I had the ham sandwich and it was the best one I have had out of all the others I had at other interviews. I hate it when they skimp out on the meat and get a mouth full of bread.

Question, I'm only allowed to update them with information 1 week after my interview. I have a publication in the works that is under review. Do you think it would be appropriate to update them with this? It is under review and not accepted, but I only have a 1 week time span and the appropriate revisions/experiments needed to finish it will not be done within a 1 week time frame.

If so, should I upload a copy of the manuscript? Or is that cringey/weird.

Where'd they say we can only submit updates within one week of interviewing?

I was told to submit updates within 2 weeks at my interview

They told me that in the interview as well, but their portal says "Files may still be uploaded after application submission up untill one week after an MD interview."

I think I'd rather err on the side of caution for this.

Yeah definitely better to be safe. I’m only waiting slightly over a week because I want to include my final grades from this quarter. Also, they told us to email updates to the admissions email - I had forgotten about the portal upload. Do you think it matters if you upload or email?

Best way to get from the airport to near campus? Flying in at 4:30pm on Sunday if anyone wants to split an Uber!
