2017-2018 Duke University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah definitely better to be safe. I’m only waiting slightly over a week because I want to include my final grades from this quarter. Also, they told us to email updates to the admissions email - I had forgotten about the portal upload. Do you think it matters if you upload or email?

I honestly have no idea which is preferred.

Interviewed a month ago, and starting to get really worried about admissions. This is going to be a long few months...

okay, normally when schools talk about wearing comfy tour shoes I just change into flats... but the number and tone of the warnings from Duke has me seriously considering bringing my kicks that I wear in the airport

any reviews on the TWO HOUR walking tour and whether or not you also have to run wind sprints?

It wasn't absurd, but it was long. Flats would probably work.

Interviewed a month ago too. The wait sucks, but nothing we can do now! Just gotta hope for the best and try to relax (I know, basically impossible). They invited us to interview, so there was obviously something they liked about us.

Anyone know if Duke's started rejecting people yet? I haven't heard anything from them so I'm cautiously optimistic, but I also haven't heard anything from NYU but I know for a fact that they're done interviewing this month, so their silence is basically a rejection. Is this the same situation?

so just to confirm if we didn't upload an update a week after our interview we can't now?
The portal says one week, but we have until 2 weeks after our interview to upload updates before the application is forwarded to the admissions committee.

EDIT: Never mind, I take back what I said. Definitely submit your update within a week of your interview! Even though I distinctly remember hearing from two separate adcoms that we had two weeks, when I emailed admissions, they said no updates are accepted after a week 🙁

For anyone who has already interviewed - did you send Thank You letters? I figure an MMI doesn't usually merit one, but I'm curious as to what other people did.

I didn't; felt it unnecessary for the same reason

Does Duke want our Fall transcripts sent to them somehow? I couldn't find much on their website and the secondary portal didn't have a specific spot for it. But still low key antsy

II yesterday, complete mid-November (yeah, I know it's late... I spent a long time on those obscenely long essays, because I had a million things going on in my life at that time, but also wanted to send in well-written, thought-out essays... for anyone reading this in future years, I guess that strategy worked out? At least with non-rolling admissions schools, I think it's worthwhile to take the extra time to write great essays vs rushing them. Just my two cents, n=1)

Anyway, fwiw they're giving me 5 dates to choose from, the last of which is Feb 8th, which is also the day that the invite says interview season "tentatively" concludes.

Dang, you're making me regret that I didn't go ahead and submit in November. I told myself it was too late. I might be coming back to this very post next year for inspiration. 🙂

Bigtime congrats on having the conviction to submit late in the cycle and for your II!

Eh I don't know if it was conviction so much as it was a sunk cost fallacy haha.. Having spent sooo much time writing and revising those essays, I told myself there's no way I'm not submitting it after all that effort lol. To be fair, there were other schools whose secondaries I wasn't able to finish before Nov, though, and I didn't end up trying to send in any of those -- I just figured since Duke was non-rolling, there was enough of a chance they hadn't filled all their interviews / class slots that it made it worth finishing and submitting everything even after the first week of November.

But don't beat yourself up about it! Just know that if you do end up reapplying next cycle, you shouldn't hesitate to send in the Duke app (or any other non-rolling school, I'd argue), even if it seems late. I also know a girl who is currently an M1 or M2 at Duke and had to apply twice – the first year, she didn't get in anywhere (idk if/where she interviewed though), and the second time around she obviously got into Duke and is very happy there, so there's hope! 🙂

congrats! mind sharing stats?

I completely agree, which is why I'm kicking myself extra hard about Duke. I should have done it. I did send in one other at the last minute (last week!) but Duke would have been way better. Kudos to your friend for getting in on Round 2! That's a great story.

question: are the interviewers that interviewed us in the MMI actual members on the admissions committee?

woahhh question: are the interviewers that interviewed us in the MMI actual members on the admissions committee?

I remember hearing it is a mix of faculty, alumni, hospital staff, and previous patients. Idk if that was from SDN or something else though. Point being - you don't know who your MMI proctor is and it shouldn't matter.

Thanks! I don't mind sharing, but I'm a non-trad student who graduated 3-5 years ago, so my stats are not exactly straightforward (and not super indicative of my app as a whole, I don't think), but whatevs: undergrad (at a top 10 university) cGPA 3.46 and sGPA 3.0; 100th percentile MCAT; formal post-bacc/SMP cGPA ~3.85

Bumping this for clarification: post-interview transcripts** idk if that was obvious and I probably should know this but I can't seem to find any directions in the emails/secondary portal

I was under the impression that all/most schools only ask for transcripts post acceptance if you are in school, not after this semester? I am not sure though..

Not true.

I graduated undergrad years ago, and finished my post bac in the spring of this year (i.e. My AAMCAS application already has ALL my final grades), and every school I've been accepted into has requested a set of official transcripts to be sent directly to them.

Yes. I think you misunderstood what I wrote (or I was unclear). For those still in their senior year, they do not HAVE to send transcripts right now to reflect new Fall 2017 grades, they only have to send official final transcripts after graduation/ after they are accepted. My point was for people who are asking if it is required to send grades right now as an update, and I believe it is not.

Ahh.

Yeah, I've seen most grades from this semester sent as an update- not because it was required.

I got an II yesterday too! Saw in the U Miami thread that you interviewed there, and I'm going there in January. Maybe we'll meet each other at Duke.
What were the available dates?

Which email address should updates be sent to? Please, and thank you.

Can anyone speak to how much weight interviews hold in terms of a duke applicant’s chances? Considering we’re at a top tier school, it would seem that most applicants would do good-to-fair at the MMI...

Is there any chance that I can make a 520 flight after the interview ? I have MD session #1. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Pretty sure my outgoing flight was at 5:30; doable but definitely a little stressful, ubered with some other interviewees to the airport

When they say they don't want update letters sent after 2 weeks of your interview, I assume they also won't care about additional LORs you now have in AMCAS? It's been almost 3 months and I've probably been reviewed anyway.

Question for everyone: does Duke accept Letters of Interest or Letters of Intent?

Potentially, as others have said...it would be tight. Session #1 just means you will be doing your MMIs in the morning, but they will still hold everyone until later in the afternoon.

Based on my communications with the admissions office, they close your file completely until a final read in February. Your one option is to submit an update letter within two weeks of your interview. If you have something relevant to submit, I think that definitely shows interest because you are taking the time to send them some information.
