2017-2018 Tulane University Application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think they are just filling up II spots and getting more selective. 400 hrs is a good amount especially comparing stats. Their secondary isn't long enough to go into a ton of elaboration about service

It also depends on the type of non-clinical volunteering you engaged in, as well as the length. Me personally, my non-clinical volunteering spanned over the course of 9 years, for a total of 5000+ hours. As for the space limit, I agree that it wasn't much. But what can you do?

If it helps, I don't think rejections are being given out based on high or low stats. Mine were certainly non-impressive.

What I think adcom is looking for this year, is (minimum stats obviously, but also) people who fit their mission. If you tell them you wish to help the underserved and have no proof of doing so in the past, they may reject you simply because they have no proof. If there is no evidence to back up your claim, they may not believe you to be sincere. My guess: if you have a seriously long trend of service to others, you should be fine. And I do NOT mean just research or clinical volunteering. Service to the homeless is non-clinical, and speaks volumes of the person you are. So don't worry about the green Mark and portal. Look over your application instead, compare it with Tulane's mission, and then decide on whether or not you have a chance at this school.
Yea I think its cause I jumped around a lot, my max commitment was for 1 year, most were separate 6 month stints at different places, so relatively short term.

Rejected this morning. Complete 07/18. Good luck to those still in the game.

I think this process is less random than people say... most schools really consistently screen first for bare minimum gpa/MCAT, look at fit next, then assign a numerical value to how badly they want you. I think most schools recognize an applicant with medium stats/high fit and high stats/medium fit may attend their school and thus extend an interview. For applicants who get rejected - remember that it may be a blessing to be rejected somewhere that you weren't a good fit. Med school is already difficult and far more so if your interests and passions aren't a strong point for the school.

I second that. My stats aren't super high, but I think a lot of service is what pulled me through to at least an II.

+1. Mediocre GPA, solid MCAT, but thousands of service hours over the past 12-15 years (obviously I'm a non-trad, which gave me a lot more years to accumulate service hours).

Can any current MS comment on the MD/MBA program? Around what date does the 4 yr program usually start? So far, I'm seeing huge discrepancies (June 2nd, June 24th, August 8th)

Thanks!

August 8th is the start of the MD program for everyone. I don't know about any other dates.

+2 My MCAT is poop compared to all these wonderful candidates but I went through a lot of hardship growing up and have devoted thousands of hours to helping out disenfranchised communities. I am still in shock about how much reception I have been getting this cycle, I thought I wouldn't even have a chance outside of DO and my IS schools.

Just to pose the contrary perspective, I feel like I have good ECs (thousands of hours volunteering in underserved communities, thousands of clinical hours) but lowish stats and haven't had a ton of response this cycle. Granted it's early, and my committee letter was just submitted last week lol. And your ECs and story was probably better, but still, Was hoping for a stronger response so far.

(Just to pose the perspective of someone who feels it is a bit more random).

If your committee letter was only uploaded last week, even if you cured cancer you wouldn't have heard back from any schools yet. Unless you have a complete file with secondary, secondary fee, committee letter, and MCAT score, adcoms won't even open your file.

It's a long process and you were basically complete at schools last week. I'm sure with all of those clinical and non-clinical hours you'll be hearing from many schools in the next few months! Good luck!

Haha thanks! I wasn't trying to complain or sound ridiculous although re-reading it, it kinda sounds that way lol. Late nights on Friday at work do that...

Anyway good luck to you too!

Is it too late to apply here? It was one of my top choices going into the application cycle until I realized my husband's employer does not have an office in NOLA. On the other hand, I really love this school. I'm torn and he is more than happy to change jobs if necessary. However, I'm not sure I'm a competitive applicant - I have a lot of volunteering experience, but much of it is from years ago and I'm doing a lot of new volunteering now, but it's not reflected on my primary application. Any thoughts? I have a low GPA (3.43) but solid MCAT (522). Non-trad (almost 15 years out).

I think you have a chance, but send in your secondary fast because so many of their II's already went out. I recently received mine and the earliest date was the end of January!

Maybe I should put it on the backburner and use it as an option for next year. It sounds like it probably won't work for this one.

Definitely submit an application! You'll notice if you browse through the MSAR that TUSoM is unusual in that most of its matriculating class falls into the 24-29 age range, which lends credence to the view that they highly value non-traditional applicants. On their website, it even says that they select for applicants with "a wealth of life experiences". Your strong MCAT scores and volunteerism would also help IMO. You can't know for sure unless you try.

Honestly, I agree with peekaboo56 and upstage. Your stats are stellar, you have those volunteering hours, and you're a non-trad. Unless you're worried about running low on your budget, why not submit a secondary? The only way you absolutely won't stand a chance, is if you don't apply at all. Just think carefully about each of the questions and include your most recent/longitudinal volunteering activities.

Do it this cycle and you might not have to re-apply next year.

You have the type of stats that schools will take chances on later on since they don't have many invites left. Super high stats.

Anyone know average LizzyM score for Tulane? Mine is 65 - not sure what my chances are.
AMCAS cGPA 3.22, sGPA 3.7, MCAT 513 (Also have a Master's with 3.7 GPA but not included in any AMCAS GPAs as it's from the UK).

Median matriculated LM if you take it from MSAR would be 65-66 (or 509/3.56cGPA). I really think Tulane is looking for more than high stats and honestly, I don't think it would hurt you to apply. Look at their class profile and you will see that they are very proud of all that their students do. If you have a hobby that is not on that list it will probably help you! I got an II and I would bet money that it is because of my favorite hobbies.

Does being in the 24-29 range count as non traditional? Like I'll be 24 if I matriculate, so 2 years out of college with 2 years full time research job. I don't think thats non traditional is like semi traditional I guess? Idk I'm not like 27 I feel like Im not old enough to be considered non traditional

Thanks! I'm non-trad (27 year old) so lots of work and volunteer experience + a masters so hoping my ECs plus hobbies will help!
Do you mind sharing your stats and what this these hobbies are haha?

I don't mind, but I'll DM you. I would probably give myself away!

Non-trad typically means "not right out of college" IMHO

Probably better than some and not as good as some others!

Got the check mark this morning. Complete 7/27.

Still no green checkmark and I was complete on the 29th...RIP

+1, was complete 7/27 night (7/28 12am to be exact if that matters). Should we be freaking out since everyone else has been getting the green check mark today...?

Just rejected a few minutes ago. OOS. LizzyM 72. I was complete on July 16th. Good luck to everyone still in the running. Seems like a great school, and congrats to those of you who have received interviews thus far!

I got an interview invite 8/18 and signed up for my invite within a couple hours of receiving the email. The first available date was the third week of January. I took it, but I'm feeling insecure now. Is interviewing later going to negatively impact my chances? That's so far away...

OOS, URM, LizzyM of 70.

Yes. But your chances are astronomically better than people that aren't offered an interview, so just stand out at your interview and hope for the best.

No green check, and complete on 7/28. Must not be linear

So, once we get the green check mark do we have to keep checking the portal or have II been emailed?
