I think they are just filling up II spots and getting more selective. 400 hrs is a good amount especially comparing stats. Their secondary isn't long enough to go into a ton of elaboration about service

It also depends on the type of non-clinical volunteering you engaged in, as well as the length. Me personally, my non-clinical volunteering spanned over the course of 9 years, for a total of 5000+ hours. As for the space limit, I agree that it wasn't much. But what can you do?

What I think adcom is looking for this year, is (minimum stats obviously, but also) people who fit their mission. If you tell them you wish to help the underserved and have no proof of doing so in the past, they may reject you simply because they have no proof. If there is no evidence to back up your claim, they may not believe you to be sincere. My guess: if you have a seriously long trend of service to others, you should be fine. And I do NOT mean just research or clinical volunteering. Service to the homeless is non-clinical, and speaks volumes of the person you are. So don't worry about the green Mark and portal. Look over your application instead, compare it with Tulane's mission, and then decide on whether or not you have a chance at this school.

Yea I think its cause I jumped around a lot, my max commitment was for 1 year, most were separate 6 month stints at different places, so relatively short term.

I think this process is less random than people say... most schools really consistently screen first for bare minimum gpa/MCAT, look at fit next, then assign a numerical value to how badly they want you. I think most schools recognize an applicant with medium stats/high fit and high stats/medium fit may attend their school and thus extend an interview. For applicants who get rejected - remember that it may be a blessing to be rejected somewhere that you weren't a good fit. Med school is already difficult and far more so if your interests and passions aren't a strong point for the school.

+1. Mediocre GPA, solid MCAT, but thousands of service hours over the past 12-15 years (obviously I'm a non-trad, which gave me a lot more years to accumulate service hours).

August 8th is the start of the MD program for everyone. I don't know about any other dates.

Nov 9th. They seem to do a holistic review. Personally I want to go to a school that looks at the whole application rather than strictly the stats. I feel like it makes for a more interesting and cohesive cohort.

+2 My MCAT is poop compared to all these wonderful candidates but I went through a lot of hardship growing up and have devoted thousands of hours to helping out disenfranchised communities. I am still in shock about how much reception I have been getting this cycle, I thought I wouldn't even have a chance outside of DO and my IS schools.

Just to pose the contrary perspective, I feel like I have good ECs (thousands of hours volunteering in underserved communities, thousands of clinical hours) but lowish stats and haven't had a ton of response this cycle. Granted it's early, and my committee letter was just submitted last week lol. And your ECs and story was probably better, but still, Was hoping for a stronger response so far.

(Just to pose the perspective of someone who feels it is a bit more random).

If your committee letter was only uploaded last week, even if you cured cancer you wouldn't have heard back from any schools yet. Unless you have a complete file with secondary, secondary fee, committee letter, and MCAT score, adcoms won't even open your file.

It's a long process and you were basically complete at schools last week. I'm sure with all of those clinical and non-clinical hours you'll be hearing from many schools in the next few months! Good luck!

On the other hand, I really love this school. I'm torn and he is more than happy to change jobs if necessary. However, I'm not sure I'm a competitive applicant - I have a lot of volunteering experience, but much of it is from years ago and I'm doing a lot of new volunteering now, but it's not reflected on my primary application. Any thoughts? I have a low GPA (3.43) but solid MCAT (522). Non-trad (almost 15 years out).

I think you have a chance, but send in your secondary fast because so many of their II's already went out. I recently received mine and the earliest date was the end of January!

Definitely submit an application! You'll notice if you browse through the MSAR that TUSoM is unusual in that most of its matriculating class falls into the 24-29 age range, which lends credence to the view that they highly value non-traditional applicants. On their website, it even says that they select for applicants with "a wealth of life experiences". Your strong MCAT scores and volunteerism would also help IMO. You can't know for sure unless you try.

Honestly, I agree with peekaboo56 and upstage. Your stats are stellar, you have those volunteering hours, and you're a non-trad. Unless you're worried about running low on your budget, why not submit a secondary? The only way you absolutely won't stand a chance, is if you don't apply at all. Just think carefully about each of the questions and include your most recent/longitudinal volunteering activities.

Median matriculated LM if you take it from MSAR would be 65-66 (or 509/3.56cGPA). I really think Tulane is looking for more than high stats and honestly, I don't think it would hurt you to apply. Look at their class profile and you will see that they are very proud of all that their students do. If you have a hobby that is not on that list it will probably help you! I got an II and I would bet money that it is because of my favorite hobbies.

Yes. But your chances are astronomically better than people that aren't offered an interview, so just stand out at your interview and hope for the best.
