2017-2018 Western Michigan University (Stryker)

So I just need some general advice. I was recently accepted at Stryker and I’m very excited because it has always been my first choice. I was also recently offered an interview at a school that has an older program and is probably the better school “on paper” The match list is impressive but the school is about 12 hours further than what I’d like to be from my hometown and the interview would be very expensive for me to attend. Im concerned about what stryker’s match list will look like because they don’t have one yet. Is this something worth being worried about? I want to withdraw my interview from this other school since I was accepted to my top choice, but I also don’t want to make a mistake if match day rolls along and it’s not quite what I’m looking for. Can someone offer some advice?
I’d say it depends what you’re planning to specialize in at the moment (so is match day really a big deal cuz you want to be a neurosurgeon or is it not that huge of an issue) and that it’s hard to know your first choice until you explore other programs and visit other campuses. Have you been to the other city even? Can you get more info about it before you decide to interview or not?

Go to the interview!! See what the other school has to offer. You are no worse off then if you don't get in there, but having options is never a bad thing. My own 2c is that you only turn down an II if you are already accepted somewhere that you KNOW you would pick above the school offering the II. Good luck!

Good things to ponder.. Maybe I just need to do more research. I love wmed but it is important to keep an open mind.. Even if it comes at travel expenses lol.

How long does Wmed take to send out decisions? Does it usually take three weeks post-interview or is it usually before that?

I’d say it’s usually before but I was the second interview date so it was a little different.
Also, mine was sent to my secondary email address and not where all my other emails from them (like II) went to. So just an FYI to check any email they could have for you - I didn’t realize any schools even had access to that email address of mine too until WMed’s decision came there.

I rejected the offer from this school, I decided to go to a more established program. Good luck to everybody

Looks like the 13-day trend didn't apply for 2/23 interviewers.. Anyone hear anything?

If anyone who has been accepted and is looking for somewhere to live, pls PM me. I’m looking for a very very clean and organized other human who doesn’t walk through the house with shoes on or leave their used toothpaste foam in the sink. And doesn’t leave a bunch of stuff out in shared areas. And hangs up their coat in the closet and walks the extra two feet to put their shoes in the closet instead of leaving them where ever they feel. Doesn’t have guests. I’ve always had another roommate so I’ve figured out what I like and dislike. I was hoping to live alone this year but if I can find someone who is similar to how I am and is a fellow med student, I think it could be perfect and a good way to save some money. If there’s another person looking for an apartment who has similar expectations to myself, please message me. Lol I swear I’m really nice and fun. I just like things to be clean and shared areas to be kept neat and tidy.

Waitlisted!! I'm so psyched, because until halfway through that email I was sure it was a rejection.

What is second look?
It’s where accepted students can go back and visit the school again. You can also meet some of the other rising M1s and meet current students and faculty during the reception and throughout the day.

Oh OK, sounds good.

Do you know when it is?

Wmed waitlists a lot, its beginning to be scary. It seems once u got interview your next spot is acceptance or wait list, no rejections.
I'm sure they reject a reasonable number of people. My impression is they don't outright accept a ton but rather accept a lot from the waitlist. I know several people who attend here and almost all had been on the waitlist at some point.

Anyone watch the match day stream? How did it go? I couldn't watch it I am at work.

Match day looked pretty good. I'll post a whole list arranged by specialty in a sec.

So this is from the live stream, and the only people whose matches I know are the ones who voluntarily went up on stage and said it. Which was 38 people (two I couldn't quite make out what they were saying).

Executive summary:
Surgery: 9, OBGYN: 2, Peds: 8, Ortho: 3, EM: 2, IM: 8, Patho: 2, Psych: 4, Anesthesiology: 4, Family: 1, Neuro: 1, Ophthalmology: 1, Radiology: 1
Total: 46 (37% primary care)

I'm not sure where the data for the other 9 students is.

The match day summary page says that there are 48 students in the class, so we're still missing 2.

Anyone else have a feeling that the 3/9 interview was essentially for the waitlist? Trying to stay optimistic but also keep my expectations reasonable...
When I interviewed in January, it felt like everyone besides one reported waitlisted on here and I was super bummed. As I just finished meeting with someone to proof read my update letter about a month later, I got the call I was accepted off of the waitlist. Didn’t even get a chance to send the letter. And I’m noticing on the accepted applicant fb page that some people I interviewed with are just now getting added to it. Also- idk how much this soothes anxiety but there’s only like 40 accepted students on the fb page. Depends on how many are actually accepting the invite but I think around 80% of Americans use fb so it could be some what of a representation of how much space is left in the class? Someone wrote on here that the waitlist is a good place to be and that most students of other classes at wmed were accepted off of the waitlist.

Did anyone else get rejected but get told in the same e-mail they're being considered for a "Bridge to MD" program? I did the phone interview a few weeks ago but got this e-mail last week, saying that while they won't request an on-campus interview from me they're still considering me for a Bridge to MD program for Fall of 2018. According to them, if you get into this program and complete it successfully, you automatically get accepted to the medical school for the Fall of 2019. Did everyone who got rejected post-interview get the e-mail describing this?

When in January did you interview?

Yeah the fb page only has 45 people and I think 5 or 6 are admins/current students

Yeah, I also interviewed on the 12th and was only on the waitlist for 2 weeks before getting accepted. I think the waitlist for WMed is a great spot to be!

So no one heard anything about the Bridge to MD program?
The only thing I can think of is that they offer a masters in biomedical science. Maybe successful students are offered admission after completing it.

No I meant the "Bridge to MD" program that's offered to some students who interview but aren't accepted or, in my case, who complete the phone interview but are told they won't be called for an on-campus interview. I was told in the same e-mail I was being considered for the 1-year "Bridge to MD" program which, upon successful completion, would grant me acceptance into the medical school class that starts the following Fall. Was this not mentioned in anyone else's rejection e-mail?

Yes I read the article, but I was asking if anyone here on SDN heard anything about it in any e-mails from Western and were told that they were being considered for it. They're only taking 4-8 students this time and are only considering a small number of candidates so I'm wondering how many people here were told about it in an e-mail.

You had asked that question like 5 posts earlier, so I think people would’ve still seen it, but thanks for clarifying why you felt the need to ask it again a few days later.

What's the final class size supposed to be this year? I don't remember what they said at my interview.
