2019-2020 Albany

Man this thread has been dead lately 🙁
I think we’re just all through the “vocally anxious” phase and more into the “silent existential dread“ phase. Probably won’t be much activity in here until someone gets pulled off of the AL or current acceptees ask more questions about the school; more likely the former, though.

hopefully everyone who are still on the UC hears back with good news soon then!

Like, today!! Please...

I kind of like the theory that was thrown around earlier that they may be waiting for the CTE day (July 15th?). But I really hope that’s not the case because that’s short-notice before school starts in August.

That's a horribly quick turnaround, especially for people like you who live on the West Coast and are banking on getting the A here. I hope that isn't the case.

AAMC needs to revise their traffic rules because they fail to understand how stressful this can be for applicants.

Definitely hope not, but I would do it. I would probably need to ask for financial help from my family to make something that big happen that quick.

honestly would just throw it on the good old loans.... would be like dumping a glass of water in the ocean at this point lol
Amen to that. The whole process is ridiculously expensive. Like it took me ~3 months to financially recover from applications and then ~1 month for my one trip to Albany.

Unfortunately loans are capped at the cost of attendance and most schools give you like $1600/month to live off of including learning resources so there’s not much left over to get out of debt from applying and/or moving 🙁 sorry my poor might be showing though

This may be a stupid question but here it is: I was accepted at another school and received their financial aid package. They asked to either accept/decline my aid in 2 weeks. However, I am still waiting to hear back from Albany as I was waitlisted and Albany is my first choice. Lets say that I get accepted to Albany eventually (seems like a miracle) after the deadline and I have already accepted my financial aid from the other school. Then do the loans at my other school get cancelled or do I still need to repay it?

Any insights would be helpful! I'm so confused about the whole loan/financial aid situation for medical school. Thank you in advance!

This is a very good question. I was wondering the same thing.

I’m in a similar position and asked my school’s financial aid office, they said as long as I drop before the first day of classes they’ll cancel my loans and I’m good to go (except I lose my original deposit). Luckily for me they start the same week as Albany- so yeah I’d just ask the financial aid office directly

thanks you! I'll definitely ask them... too bad they won't pick up their phone

I contacted them via email, I figured it would be best to have a paper trail just in case. Although, I’m sure schools deal with this every year so it’s really not a big deal to them.

I try to say a pray for you guys every day!!!

ALBANY NEEDS MY WAITLIST HOMIES IN THEIR CLASS

(Ride together, die together, even if I gave up my spit on the list)

At this point, I think we should be breaking out the pentagrams and goat blood! Because conventional means of hope are not working for all of us!

I too am on the alternate list and am waiting a bit longer before reapplying. Doesn’t seem like there has been much movement.. they also said their class was not full.

slow movement likely due to new traffic rules, COVID-19, etc etc. no harm in getting ready for reapplying while waiting to hear back since it's always good to have a plan B. it'll be great if you hear back while prepping, but you won't have to rush if you start prepping now. anyways, my fingers are crossed for you Fingerscrossed1234!

Hey all, I’m on the alternate list but I’ve decided to attend another school. Before I withdraw, I’m going to email them about movement and let you know what they say. Rooting for you guys, this was my very first interview of the cycle and it’s bittersweet to let it go!
The hero we all need!

Thank you and good luck at your school! You’re going to be a great physician!

Congratulations on your other acceptance! Thank you so much for doing this for us. It means ALOT!

From AMC: “Our class is currently not full and we are accepting off of the Alternate List by rank. We will continue to accept until our class is full.”

Best of luck all! Truly beats me why they won’t disclose our rank like other schools with ranked waitlists do.
Thank you Cabbagefacts1!!!

Yes, thank you so much for asking!

It's still their copy/paste response, but still nice to know they're still using the same response.

Am I correct that there still has not been a single firsthand report of an acceptance off the alternate list? I know AMC has told people via email that they have given acceptances off the alternate list, but it is so strange to me that we still have no firsthand reports nearly a month after the list formed.

Myself and others have thrown this around a few times. You are totally right That it’s weird.

Let’ a suppose the AL is 200 people long (just a guess, I know it’s been shorter in previous history). There are ~10 active posters on this forum that are on the AL. As we all know, there are many more lurkers. You would think that one of the 10 Active users or a single lurker would have gotten an acceptance by now and would have posted.

EDIT: I also don't understand how the class can continue to be "not full." Like can't they just let the top 30 people off of the AL and then go from there?

Life would make a lot more sense if someone accepted from the alt list would be able to let sdn know what the timeline looks like, cause if Albany did accept like 30 ppl and gave them say two weeks to respond, it would make sense to have lots of silence between waves/cascades of alt list acceptances

quick question tho: I know Albany said we have until August 3rd to hear back, but the CTE date for schools is earlier yeah (for me July 1st). so for ppl in that kind of situation, they would only really have till the CTE date to have a chance, right? Sorry, I am just a little confused about this- thanks for any clarification!

I’m guessing they mean not everyone has CTE’d yet? Like someone else said, they send an A and give 1-2 weeks to decide, which stalls movement for everyone else. Plus many students may be holding out for other waitlist schools which could cause a low CTE number. If they admit 30 people from the AL and a majority commit to Albany, they have a problem if the students accepted earlier end up committing too. For example, there’s another med school that only gives out the same number of A’s as the class size at any given time after 4/30. I’m sure most schools do something similar this late in the game.
